A Brief History of GOP Calls for Obama's Impeachment, From Benghazi to Bergdahl

This post was triggered by another recent post here.

Here's a short rundown of other White House scandals (or "scandals&quot that have led Republicans to call for Obama's impeachment (and for the full list, Wikipedia has you covered):
In 2010, Rep. Darrell Issa said Obama could face impeachment after Rep. Joe Sestak claimed the White House offered him a job to prevent him from challenging Arlen Specter in a primary.

In 2011, Rep. Michael Burgess told a local Tea Party group that Obama's impeachment "needs to happen," without specifying why.

In 2012, Sen. Jon Kyl said "impeachment is always a possibility" over Obama's immigration policies.

Last May, Rep. Jason Chaffetz said he was not pushing for impeachment, but didn't rule out that Obama could be kicked out of office over the Benghazi affair.

In 2013, Sen. Tom Coburn told the audience at a town-hall meeting that Obama was getting "perilously close" to qualifying for impeachment. Coburn's fellow Oklahoma senator, James Inhofe, agreed.

In 2013, Rep. Kerry Bentivolio said his legislative dream would be to impeach Obama.

During the debt-ceiling crisis, Rep. Louie Gohmert told an interviewer that defaulting on the U.S. government's debt would be an "impeachable offense."

While Sen. Ted Cruz has demurred on calls for Obama's impeachment in the past, but has called it "a good question" and "a question for the House to assess."

So when GOP politicians speak of overturning the will of the people, you might respond with some history.

Actor Mark Ruffalo blends film and faith-fueled activism in 'Dark Waters'

From the article:

Ruffalo produced the film and stars as Bilott. The story follows the attorney from defending chemical companies to taking them on after he is approached in the late 1990s by a farmer from his hometown who believes waste produced by the local DuPont plant is killing his cattle.
The movie also gets faith-fueled environmental activism right, according to Cassandra Carmichael, executive director of the National Religious Partnership for the Environment.

Throughout the film, Bilott and farmer Wilbur Tennant’s Christian faith is portrayed matter-of-factly as a part of their lives.
Their depictions rang true for Carmichael, who works on environmental activism with Catholics, evangelical Christians, mainline Protestant Christians, Jews, members of the black church and Orthodox communities.

“From a faith perspective, we often try to carry the water for others, to help them when they need help, whether that's building the stage for their voice or being an advocate when their voice can't be heard or getting into the trenches with them and fighting injustice,” she said.

I was going to write an outstanding piece about apathy in the non-voting public.

And then I thought, why bother?

And that "why bother" attitude is a prime reason that Trump is currently infesting the White House. Because approximately 43& of registered voters did not bother to vote in 2016.

And I was going to point out that the "why bother" attitude could result in permanent one party rule, but then I wondered would most people really care?

Who do we blame?

Do we blame an economy where millions juggle part time McJobs?

Do we blame an economy where millions have no health insurance?

Do we blame an economy where millions get what they call news from FOX?

Just who are these so-called "normal Republicans" who will take over when Trump is gone?

Who, and where are they?

President Obama dealt with over 400 filibusters, delayed and obstructed Judicial appointments, the Merrick Garland affair, constant personal attacks from GOP politicians, and attacks on his citizenship based solely on the fact that he is black.

So where exactly are these normal Republicans? And where have they been hiding since 2009?

Should Muslims celebrate Christmas? (X-posted from Religion)

From the article:

If Christmas is to celebrate the birth of an elite, highly revered Prophet, most Muslims have no problem observing the occasion. If Christmas is to celebrate his message of social justice and reforms, most Muslims have no problem observing the occasion. If Christmas is to celebrate his message to feed the hungry, welcome the immigrants, and love thy neighbor, then the Muslims have no issues celebrating the Christmas.

House Dem Humiliates Matt Gaetz By Fact-Checking Him In Real Time During Impeachment Hearing

From the article:

During his tantrum, Rep. Gaetz – one of Trump’s most shameless defenders – falsely accused Democrats in the House of being so focused on impeachment that they haven’t accomplished anything for the American people.
“Why won’t you help us move along the critical issues that are far more important than your partisan impeachment?” the GOP lawmaker yelled.
Democratic Rep. David Cicilline calmly shot back, “Let me begin by dispelling the claim that Mr. Gaetz just made. This has been one of the most productive Congresses in modern history.”

The problem with the GOP alternate news based strategy is that actual fact undercuts that strategy.

I nominate William Barr for toady of the year.

I feel his qualifications, and his contributions so far, make him far and away the best candidate for a position that requires a person to demonstrate his/her worst qualities.

What are your thoughts?

Why We Need Young People To Run the Country--And Why I'm Voting for Bernie Anyway

From the article:

Young people are badly underrepresented in the U.S. government. The average age of Senators is currently 63, a full 25 years older than the median U.S. resident. In the House, it’s 58. The four leading presidential contenders, including Trump, are all in their 70s. Joe Biden was first elected to the Senate in 1972—he has been one of the planet’s most powerful people for nearly half a century, longer than most have been alive.
Politics is often construed as noble public service, but it is also a tremendous privilege. Federal officeholders wield power over not only U.S. voters but also many who have no say in our elections, including residents of other countries and those under 18. In fact, climate change, nuclear war and environmental pollution have the potential to affect all life on this planet for centuries if not millennia to come...

Despite high-profile successes such as the victory of Ocasio-Cortez (age 30) over Joe Crowley (age 57), most Congressional incumbents can rest relatively easy, with well above an 80% likelihood of reelection. What we get is an insulated class of professional politicians, propped up by a relatively wealthy and old donor class. As Astra Taylor argues in the New York Times, structural obstacles from age limits to economic precarity to the Senate’s rural-state bias hinder young people (who disproportionately live in cities) from entering politics...

All of this suggests that “passing the torch” to a younger, more diverse suite of left politicians will need to happen sooner than later.
It is to his credit that Sanders is doing this, both directly and indirectly
. The organization that came out of his 2016 campaign, Our Revolution, is actively working to build up new progressive leadership at every level of government. And many of the young people mobilized by that campaign have gone on to hold office, from Ocasio-Cortez to socialist Chicago alderman Andre Vasquez (now 40). Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn., age 38), too, says she was inspired to run for Congress by the Sanders campaign.

Church nativity displays Jesus, Mary and Joseph in cages, separated at the border

From the article:

A Southern California church flipped the lights on its outdoor manger scene Saturday evening to reveal Jesus, Mary and Joseph as border detainees, each figure isolated in its own chain-link cage with a barbed-wire top.
The nativity display from Claremont United Methodist Church, a suburban congregation east of Los Angeles, is raising both praise and ire for its depiction of the biblical story of Jesus’s family fleeing to Egypt in the context of controversial U.S. immigration policies.
