The hypocrisy is astounding: this tax bill shows the GOPs debt concerns were pure fraud

Updated by Ezra Klein@ezraklein Dec 2, 2017, 1:55am EST

There is a long-running, almost metaphysical, argument about the GOP’s deficit hawkery. One school of thought holds that it has always been pure cynicism. Republicans passed the Bush tax cuts without offsets and paid for neither Medicare Part D nor the Iraq War. When they began decrying the deficit and debt during President Obama’s administration, under this theory, it was nothing but opportunistic political attacks, and it was obvious they would be abandoned as soon as Republicans regained power.

The response many Republicans gave was that the party had lost its way under George W. Bush, but it had recognized its mistakes and rediscovered its fiscally conservative soul. The Tea Party and its relentless campaign of primary challenges was proof the Republican Party had changed, and would stay changed.

The House and Senate passage of the GOP tax bills shows the cynics had it right.

Why the UN is investigating extreme poverty in America, the world's richest nation

The United Nations monitor on extreme poverty and human rights has embarked on a coast-to-coast tour of the US to hold the world’s richest nation – and its president – to account for the hardships endured by America’s most vulnerable citizens.

The tour, which kicked off on Friday morning, will make stops in four states as well as Washington DC and the US territory of Puerto Rico. It will focus on several of the social and economic barriers that render the American dream merely a pipe dream to millions – from homelessness in California to racial discrimination in the Deep South, cumulative neglect in Puerto Rico and the decline of industrial jobs in West Virginia.

With 41 million Americans officially in poverty according to the US Census Bureau (other estimates put that figure much higher), one aim of the UN mission will be to demonstrate that no country, however wealthy, is immune from human suffering induced by growing inequality. Nor is any nation, however powerful, beyond the reach of human rights law – a message that the US government and Donald Trump might find hard to stomach given their tendency to regard internal affairs as sacrosanct.

The UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Philip Alston, is a feisty Australian and New York University law professor who has a fearsome track record of holding power to account. He tore a strip off the Saudi Arabian regime for its treatment of women months before the kingdom legalized their right to drive, denounced the Brazilian government for attacking the poor through austerity, and even excoriated the UN itself for importing cholera to Haiti.

Living in cars, working for Amazon: meet America's new nomads

Millions of Americans are wrestling with the impossibility of a traditional middle-class existence. In homes across the country, kitchen tables are strewn with unpaid bills. Lights burn late into the night. The same calculations get performed again and again, through exhaustion and sometimes tears.

Wages minus grocery receipts. Minus medical bills. Minus credit card debt. Minus utility fees. Minus student loan and car payments. Minus the biggest expense of all: rent.

In the widening gap between credits and debits hangs a question: which bits of this life are you willing to give up, so you can keep on living?

During three years of research for my book, Nomadland: Surviving America in The Twenty-First Century, I spent time with hundreds of people who had arrived at the same answer. They gave up traditional housing and moved into “wheel estate”: RVs, travel trailers, vans, pickup campers, even a salvaged Prius and other sedans. For many, sacrificing some material comforts had allowed them to survive, while reclaiming a small measure of freedom and autonomy. But that didn’t mean life on the road was easy.

This what republican stop gap spending and austerity has created in this country, and fifth tier classless society

This is just fucked up

Senate Republicans just failed Governing 101

By Editorial Board December 2 at 9:01 AM

THE NATIONAL debt is $20?trillion and rising. That is the highest it has been as a slice of the economy since 1950. Now the Senate has approved a tax plan that would make the problem substantially worse while widening inequality and reducing access to health-care coverage. The current generation will pay. The next will pay more.

Republicans were warned over and over again. The Joint Committee on Taxation, an important congressional scorekeeper, reported Thursday that the Senate plan would add $1?trillion to the debt — and that is after accounting for any economic growth the bill would spur. The committee was just the latest nonpartisan group to predict massive new debt. But Republicans who have inveighed against budget deficits for years simply ignored the numbers. Sen.?Bob Corker (Tenn.) was the lone exception, showing his colleagues what integrity looks like by voting no.

The future they have mandated for the next generation is one in which the government has fewer resources to respond to a major economic crisis, let alone to invest in keeping the country competitive. The next time there is a recession, Congress will have to choose between pumping needed money into the economy and pushing the debt into ever more dangerous territory. Many more people could lose their jobs.

-snip-

Republicans rushed through this massive change in policy with cursory vetting and no attempt at bipartisanship. They either do not care about the debt or they are so deluded by wishful thinking and fantasy economics that they should not be running a gas station, let alone the country. Either way, they just failed Governing 101.

In the 1950's the tax rate was 90% and it paid for a lot of things-------roads, schools airports, ship docks, etc...............

Common sense logic says that if you cut taxes, you cut schools, roads, airports, ship docks, the math does not work, the "Laffer curve" (trickle down economics) is just fucked up, just like the Lewis Powell Memo, that have guided the right wing fascist party called the republicans, they have now pulled the plug from the dike, and there fingers will not plug this future hole-------------------they have created the failed state and they................were more concern with greed and green backs are more important than country

Collins: McConnell Promised Me Medicare Cuts Wont Happen

By ALICE OLLSTEIN Published NOVEMBER 30, 2017 10:15 AM

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) told reporters at a breakfast Thursday morning that she secured “a personal commitment” from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) that Congress would avoid deep automatic cuts to Medicare and other federal programs that would be triggered by the costly tax bill up for a vote this week.

The Congressional Budget Office reported earlier in November that the tax bills currently on the table would cost the government so much that it would trigger the so-called PAYGO law, putting into motion more than $100 billion in cuts to the federal budget, including an immediate $25 billion cut to Medicare.

Collins said Thursday that she confronted McConnell “asking what is the plan to avert that,” and was told that Congress would vote to waive the PAYGO cuts as they have more than a dozen times before, likely as part of the end-of-the-year government funding package.

“I met with Senator McConnell just yesterday, and he has assured me that that will not be allowed to happen,” Collins said. “If it were going to occur, I would not even be considering voting for this [tax] bill.”

How The Senate GOP Got The Votes To Overhaul The Tax Code And Strike A Blow To Obamacare

By ALICE OLLSTEIN Published DECEMBER 2, 2017 6:47 AM

In the wee hours of Saturday, after working for hours to rewrite major sections of the bill behind closed doors, the GOP-controlled Senate voted 51 to 49 to pass a bill overhauling the American tax code, exploding the deficit and gutting a key piece of the Affordable Care Act. The Senate passage advances the bill to a conference with the House, where its differences with a version passed before Thanksgiving must be hammered out.

Senators told TPM on Friday that a combination of late night wrangling, horse-trading, and promises for future votes secured the support of enough senators to get the bill across the finish line.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), who just a few days ago threatened to withhold his vote over concerns the bill will blow at $1 trillion hole in the federal deficit, announced Friday morning that he had been won over with a promise from the Trump administration not to pass a fix for undocumented young people stripped of legal protections, but to simply include him in future negotiations on the topic.

“They committed to move forward with me and work with me on it,” he told reporters.

Jeff Flake is so full of shit it is just remarkable how truly fucked up in the head he really is.................he wants to be at the table with a narcissistic psychopath who abuses woman and now children to "not pass a fix" for undocumented children-----------how fucking cold blooded is that?

Collins to vote for GOP tax plan

Source: The Hill

GOP Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) said on Friday that she will support the Senate tax plan, giving the legislation an additional shot of momentum.

"I will cast my vote in support of the Senate tax reform bill. As revised, this bill will provide much-needed tax relief and simplification for lower- and middle-income families, while spurring the creation of good jobs and greater economic growth," Collins said in a statement.

That means the Senate GOP tax plan, which leadership wants to pass as early as Friday, now has the support of 51 Republican senators. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who has concerns about the deficit, is the only remaining holdout.

Several amendments that Collins offered were incorporated into the bill, including the restoration of a $10,000 deduction for property taxes and a lower threshold for deducting medical expenses.

Lets put the medical item into complete perspective............when you file your return, you have to have in a over cost from your income of 7.6% to declare the medical deduction, in other words Susan Collins is a liar

It is plain and simple

Trump draws embarrassingly tiny crowd for National Christmas Tree lighting

As Donald Trump nears the end of his first year in office, it is clear that nothing about the man has changed since the election.

His holiday party was marred by the awkwardness of his petty exclusion of prominent black and LGBT journalists.

And then, at the National Tree lighting ceremony, he was further humiliated by hundreds of empty chairs:
