Tomah WI: First student presumed positive COVID-19 case at open area school

Nothing about the community feelings or parents. It does say that virtual classes are an option.
This is scary very scary.

TOMAH, Wis. (WEAU) -

Last week, a Tomah elementary school reopened for the school year. This week, one student is a presumed positive COVID-19 case
.

Lemonweir Elementary says the student had a fever and was in close contact with a family member who tested positive.

The school notified all parents of the situation through an email from the superintendent.

Those in the student’s class who were within six feet and the teacher are being asked to quarantine until a negative test result.

The school says it did anticipate cases would happen, but says it’s important to stay open.

“We strongly believe that we have an obligation to educate our children,” said Nicki Pope, Lemonweir Elementary principal. “It’s going to be detrimental if they are not in front of a teacher or at least have the education system to provide them to move forward from here. [Teachers] are essential workers to provide that education to our students.”

Lemonweir says students are not afraid to be back, but instead happy and excited.

A virtual schooling option was also made available for parents with concerns.

Night 54: Feds fire tear gas as over 1000 gather in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Federal agents fired tear gas, pepper balls and flashbangs at demonstrators in downtown Portland during the 54th straight night of protests on Tuesday.

Officers made their first appearance of the night at about 11:10 p.m. and immediately started using crowd-control munitions in an attempt to disperse hundreds of people gathered outside of the Multnomah County Justice Center and Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse on SW 3rd Avenue. Another group of federal officers marched down SW 4th and stopped outside of City Hall. It’s unclear what prompted them to stop at that location.

Earlier in the day, the “Wall of Moms” (and dads) gathered at Salmon Street Springs Park before marching to the Justice Center area in an effort to protect younger protesters.

The moms have been trying to separate protesters and the federal officers, as well as helping people wash their eyes and recover from exposure to tear gas. Their close proximity to the action means they’re often the first to feel the effects of crowd control munitions..........................................

“Disturbing And Demoralizing”: DHS Employees Are Worried The Portland Protest Response Is Destroying Their Agency’s Reputation

"We have a lot of work ahead in terms of repairing the public’s trust."

Posted on July 21, 2020, at 7:02 p.m. ET

The Department of Homeland Security’s response to anti–police brutality protests in Portland, Oregon, has disturbed and angered many employees, who called the deployment of the federal force an unusual maneuver that could do long-term damage to the agency’s reputation.

In recent days, Oregon leaders, including the governor, have called on DHS officers to leave Portland as nightly protests have grown in size. Videos captured by protesters and media have shown the consistent use of tear gas and other "less than lethal" weapons from officers guarding the Mark O. Hatfield Courthouse in downtown Portland amid a backdrop of federal officers outfitted in camouflage snatching people off the street in unmarked vehicles.

The Trump administration and senior DHS officials have said the federal response in Portland — where officers from US Customs and Border Protection and ICE are deployed — is necessary to protect the federal courthouse from damage, and they have called some protesters violent criminals. The situation in Portland, they’ve added, is unique and requires a federal response due to local leaders’ apparent unwillingness to help protect federal property.

But conversations with 17 DHS employees, all of whom requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, reveal that many at the agency disagree with the show of force. Some called for an investigation, while others said they feared the long-term consequences for the agency’s reputation.

“Despite working at DHS, I watch and learn about every day’s new descent into lawlessness and authoritarianism just like the rest of the world,” one employee said. “Being a part of this corrupt regime, even as I play no role in the decision-making process, leaves me disgusted by my employer and saddened for my country.”

Many employees believe the deployment was directly connected to President Donald Trump’s reelection efforts and was politicizing the agency.

“This administration’s utterly transparent fearmongering of sending federal officers out against peaceful protesters in Portland and Chicago has no purpose other than to support Trump’s reelection bid. It is blatantly unconstitutional and an embarrassment to the agency and the career civil servants who work here,” said one employee.

Ocasio-Cortez accosted by GOP lawmaker over remarks: 'That kind of confrontation hasn't ever happened to me'

By Mike Lillis - 07/21/20 08:45 AM EDT

Tensions flared on Capitol Hill this week when a Republican lawmaker challenged Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on issues of crime and policing in an unusual — and decidedly personal — confrontation on the Capitol steps.

Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) was coming down the steps on the east side of the Capitol on Monday, having just voted, when he approached Ocasio-Cortez, who was ascending into the building to cast a vote of her own.

In a brief but heated exchange, which was overheard by a reporter, Yoho told Ocasio-Cortez she was "disgusting" for recently suggesting that poverty and unemployment are driving a spike in crime in New York City during the coronavirus pandemic.

"You are out of your freaking mind," Yoho told her.

The two then parted ways. Ocasio-Cortez headed into the building, while Yoho, joined by Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), began descending toward the House office buildings. A few steps down, Yoho offered a parting thought to no one in particular.

"Fucking bitch," he said.........................

Ocasio-Cortez shot back, telling Yoho he was being "rude."............................

Two generations ago, Richard Nixon sweated his way to losing the first ever presidential debate on television to a young, fit and cool John F Kennedy.

It was the kind of rookie mistake you could put down to the newness of TV.

So how do you explain – 60 years later – the drenching sweat that trickled down the face of the reality TV star who is now living inside the White House?................................

Of the very few things Donald Trump is supposed to know in any modicum of detail, TV sits right at the tippity-top. Trump spent a small fortune on his failed Tulsa rally: analysis

Published 1 min ago on July 21, 2020

..............................

The New York Times calculated the totals, which came out to $2.2 million, to garner about 6,200 people to attend his rally and the “overflow” rally which was ultimately canceled. That adds up to about $354.84 per person who attended. It’s unknown how many people contracted COVID-19 at the event, but a Tulsa health official said the rally “likely contributed” to a surge in new COVID-19 cases. At least eight members of the Trump advance team, including Secret Service agents, also tested positive after being in Tulsa.

“The new filings show just how much Mr. Trump’s campaign paid to rent the arena itself: $537,705.44 in “’acility rental’ payments to the BOK Center,” said the Times. “But that fee was just the start. The campaign then paid nearly $1 million in ‘event staging’ fees between June 16 and the end of the month to eight different companies. The most went to Arcus Group, LLC, which received $673,906 in two payments for “event staging,” one a few days before the rally and another a few days after.”

Thousands protest in downtown Portland Monday; federal officers again respond with force

Portland Protests continue for 54th night

By Ted Sickinger| The Oregonian/OregonLive and Alex Hardgrave | The Oregonian/OregonLive

Portland parent groups marched in droves to Monday night to join downtown protests in response to the repeated and nightly use of force by federal agents on demonstrators.

Portlanders first started protesting police violence against Black Americans in late May. It wasn’t until 31 days later that federal officers were first seen at the nightly demonstrations. In the weeks since, federal agents have used less-lethal munitions and gas on protesters numerous times.

Federal officers again set off gas and shot projectiles towards demonstrators gathered early Tuesday morning. The nearly hour-long confrontation began after midnight. Hundreds of people had packed into the courthouse entrance, and some people near the front line tore off plywood attached to the building. Federal officers responded in force.

Their actions have drawn scrutiny from Oregon officials and support from President Donald Trump. The president again praised federal law enforcement Monday, saying they were doing a fantastic job in Portland. Trump said he planned to replicate the response in other major U.S. cities led by Democratic mayors.

Monday night’s demonstrations started around 9 p.m. Two groups, called the Wall of Moms and PDXDadPod, marched from the riverfront to Justice Center. The jail is at the heart of nightly protests. Two federal buildings sit on either side of it.

Even before the parents’ groups arrived, more than 300 people had gathered near the downtown jail. Young Black community leaders used a megaphone to ask, “Whose lives matter?” Hundreds of people responded, “Black lives matter!”

The crowd roared when the parents’ march of several hundreds of people arrived just before 9 p.m. and joined the chant. Most were women wearing yellow shirts. One person held a sign that said, “Hey feds, you need to think about your sad choices — Mom.”......................................

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland’s parents have to come to the aid of protesters as the city heads into its 53rd consecutive night of demonstrations against systemic racism and police.

The self-described Wall of Moms lined the fence around the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse Sunday evening in an effort to protect protesters. It was the group’s second appearance at the downtown demonstrations. Several of the moms also helped people wash their eyes after federal officers deployed tear gas and other crowd-control munitions.

They can now be found on social media at @WallofMoms.

“We come out here in yellow and large numbers,” said Edie, a protester. ...........................
