Report from Broward County. Scott is everywhere, where is Nelson?

Scott is flooding TV with ads, and they are very good ads. I've seen very few Nelson ads. Nelson and the DNC better get serious, time is running out.

After over 40 years of voting I have switched from registered Independent to Democrat

As a liberal / progressive I have always voted for the democratic candidate. However I have always been a registered independent on the principle that political parties are like organized religion; a preset doctrine designed to relieve people from the burden of thinking. I have always agreed with Nietzsche’s statement; “He who thinks a great deal is not suited to be a party man: he thinks his way through the party and out the other side too soon.”

However the very survival of our constitutional republic is in serious jeopardy due to the Republican Party’s abandonment of patriotism and decency, and its’ embrace of jingoism and bigotry. We are headed in the direction of Russia, technically a constitutional republic but in reality a dictatorship. The Democratic party, for all its’ flaws, is the only hope we have of maintaining the supremacy of the constitution. So as long as the current crisis continues I will belong to the Democratic party. It is a choice of “join or die”.

P.S;
After Trump is gone and democracy is restored, I go back to being an independent.

What impresses me is all the seniors marching.

As an aging baby boomer, the thought of getting my fat wrinkled ass off the couch and marching in the summer heat can be discouraging. I'm tempted to say, "let the kids do it. Protests are for the young". These pics remind me that protecting democracy is my duty for as long as I live. I don't have the energy or stamina of someone half my age, but I'll do all I can.

Robert Reich's 7 rules for resistance. #4 is especially important for DU

http://robertreich.org/post/175340484790

Fourth, don’t succumb to divisive incrimination over “who lost” the 2016 election (Hillary loyalists, Bernie supporters, Jill Stein voters, etc.). This will get us nowhere. We must be united.

Finally, know that this fight will be long and hard. It will require our patience, our courage, and our resolve. The stakes could not be higher.

Wise words from Dan Rather

#steady #courage

For decades, Republicans have been able to have it all ways. Promise a radical reactionary rethink of American democracy to its rabid base, and hide behind a court that protected them from what would be a very unpopular set of policies with the general public. Well no longer.

Do we really want to outlaw abortion? We may soon know. Do we really believe we can attack gay rights and other rights at unprecedented levels? We may soon know. Do we really believe that our corporations should have unfettered power and workers have relatively none? Here again, the movement is already afoot.

The farce is shattered, the fig leaf has disappeared, the obfuscations have been replaced by clarity. And what is in its place is a very unpopular President stoking the flames of a massive backlash.

I do not say this to be Pollyannish. The president and his supporters have a lot of power, and tens of millions of fervent members in their base. But we have seen a growing realization from not only moderates but conservatives who still care about the constitution and recognize how perilous is the threat of the modern GOP. Look at Michael Bloomberg pledging tens of millions of dollars to elect Democrats. Look at opinion writers who have preached for the GOP in the past say now is a time to elect Democrats. Look at men and women of power and fame who are arguing that this cannot stand.

I know there is a feeling among many progressives that they have lost, that the future is a foregone conclusion. They see the forces arrayed against them on the battlefield of justice and feel the doom of certain and impending defeat. But turn to your left and right and see the long lines of fellow citizens. Look behind you and see the formidable artillery of wealth and power that is on YOUR side. Take a deep breath and feel the cool air of hope and justice in your lungs, and then march forward.

Sudan Is About To Execute A Teen For Defending Herself Against Rape

Source: Huffington Post

The 19-year-old Sudanese woman is currently on death row in Omdurman, Sudan, for killing a man in self-defense. She was convicted of murdering her husband, who raped her on their “honeymoon.”

When she was 16, Noura’s family attempted to force her to marry a man, despite the fact that Islam prohibits marriage without consent. Refusing the marriage, she ran 155 miles away from her family home to a town called Sennar. She lived with her aunt for three years, determined to complete her high school education and with her eyes on further studies. In 2017, she received word that the wedding plans had been cancelled and that she was safe to return home.

It was a cruel trick. On her return, Noura found the wedding ceremony underway and was given away to the same groom she had rejected three years earlier.

Defiant, Noura refused to consummate the wedding for a number of days. Her husband became increasingly aggressive, and before the week was over, forced himself onto his teenage wife. With the help of his two brothers and a cousin who held her down, her husband raped her.

Bernie Sanders Has A Plan To Revive Labor Unions

Source: Huffington Post

Sanders’ bill, called the Workplace Democracy Act, would remove several of the major barriers to organized labor’s growth.

It would ban “right to work” laws, which allow employees to opt out of paying union dues even though the union must still bargain on their behalf, leading to what unions call “free-riding.” In recent years, Republicans and business groups have pushed to expand the reach of right-to-work laws, which are now on the books in 28 states, including traditional labor strongholds like Michigan and Wisconsin.

The bill would also guarantee workers the right to form a union after a majority in their workplace have signed cards saying that is their wish. “Card check,” as the process is known, lets organizers bypass the holding of a secret-ballot election, before which employers often pressure workers to vote no.

Voting rights for felons will be on Florida's November ballot

Source: Miami Herald

For the first time in Florida history, voters will decide whether to grant the right to vote to an estimated 1.5 million convicted felons.

Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced Tuesday that the proposal gained the required 766,000 valid signatures to get on the November ballot. The state elections website showed 799,278 valid signatures.

The proposal would extend voting rights to most convicted felons without a formal hearing process. It would not apply to people convicted of murder or sex crimes.

If 60 percent of voters support the initiative, it will be added to the Florida Constitution.
