Sudan Is About To Execute A Teen For Defending Herself Against Rape
Source: Huffington Post
The 19-year-old Sudanese woman is currently on death row in Omdurman, Sudan, for killing a man in self-defense. She was convicted of murdering her husband, who raped her on their honeymoon.
When she was 16, Nouras family attempted to force her to marry a man, despite the fact that Islam prohibits marriage without consent. Refusing the marriage, she ran 155 miles away from her family home to a town called Sennar. She lived with her aunt for three years, determined to complete her high school education and with her eyes on further studies. In 2017, she received word that the wedding plans had been cancelled and that she was safe to return home.
It was a cruel trick. On her return, Noura found the wedding ceremony underway and was given away to the same groom she had rejected three years earlier.
Defiant, Noura refused to consummate the wedding for a number of days. Her husband became increasingly aggressive, and before the week was over, forced himself onto his teenage wife. With the help of his two brothers and a cousin who held her down, her husband raped her.

(1,216 posts)We do not need rapists here. There is enough of that crime going on already. We do not need more rapists arriving here.

(949 posts)The linked article also calls it marital rape. I don't think it can be called marital rape if the woman never consented to the wedding in the first place. The reason it irks me is that I actually dislike the term marital rape because it often seems to be used to make marital rape seem slightly less horrific than "non-marital" rape, when both are simply rape. I find the term "marital rape" to verge on victim-blaming. Rape is rape.

(26,060 posts)without resorting to hyperbolic BS? The US doesn't ALLOW rapists, doesn't ALLOW forced marriage - these things are against the law which is obviously not true in Sudan (seems to happen an awful lot in Muslim countries for something that is supposedly against Islam).

(26,060 posts)The only ones I know that engage are those fundamentalist Mormons in Southern Utah/Northern Arizona. And even those people are on the run and being put in prison - BECAUSE IT'S AGAINST THE LAW.

(26,060 posts)but if you have proof a 12 year old was FORCED to marry, you need to bring that to the police AS IT'S AGAINST THE LAW. I will fight you on this all freaking day. You trying to minimize what happens to many young girls in Muslim countries is truly disgusting.

(26,060 posts)Why are you pretending otherwise? Why the need to minimize and deflect from what's happening to young girls like this one?

(26,060 posts)Your first instinct was to deflect and it happens here all the time when it comes to anything involving Islam. I got tired of that long ago and will never let it pass without calling it out. Go ahead and block me if you can't handle being taken to task for what you post.

(19,188 posts)has intentions of keeping the status quo? There's enough going on right now where you should be convinced the right-wing has designs to turn the U.S. into a fascist/theocratic dictatorship. Is that "hyperbolic BS"? The GOP has showed time and again that laws mean absolutely nothing to them.
Stick your head in the sand if you wish, but I prefer to be prepared for what's coming. You apparently think the GOP is going to play by the rules. Good luck with that.

(26,060 posts)FORCED marriage and the kind of place where rapists get off scott free while the victims get stoned to death or burned alive? They haven't even been able to make sure prayers are in schools and you want me to obsess over this kind of thing? My OTHER objection to this is the constant need to minimize what's happening to women and young girls all over the world by pretending anything like that is happening here or right around the corner. Because that's all the poster was trying to do - deflect from what's ACTUALLY happening by pretending the same thing is happening here.
