But to your second point, Bernie doesn't have that strong an appeal among true independents, just a small slice of them (libertarians, far left voters who left the party, etc). But overall, he won't pull a lot of votes from that pool.
Biden would. He can get disafected voters who otherwise wouldn't vote dem, plus all of the dem leaning indies.
You probably would ask why. Well, he doesn't scare them. While his policies are progressive, he doesn't throw socialism at them, or threaten to leave nato, or any one of a dozen other positions that are, well, scary to some.
I'm not saying I disagree with a lot of bernies positions (some not, but who loves everything from anyone?). Just that joe is more electable, and would draw more of the necessary votes and expand the pool.
