(11,088 posts)He was his third. His second vice president was a devout socialist, named Henry Wallace. FDR did not have to say he was socialist (and was not) to propose policies that directly contradicted the base of his party, and was starkly to the left of it. Do you honestly think that FDR's proposal to make having a home, food, a job and health care as a constitutional right would not be to the left of our party or his party at the time?
FDR's first VP, John Nance, was far more indicative of the democratic base at the time. He opposed FDR's decision to try and stack the supreme court, proposed funding less social programs to balance the budget and vocally called to use military force to break up the flint sit down strike at GM.
BTW Truman was chosen as a compromise VP after Wallace made controversial statements. The party wanted a centrist replacement, so FDR gave them one.
