In reply to the discussion: Pic Of The Moment: Descendants Of Immigrants Proudly Tell Other Immigrants To Go Home [View all]freshwest
(53,661 posts)50. My family came here from Europe before the laws existed. Are we illegal? I'm sure the natives said
when we got off the ships, 'There goes the neighborhood' and they were right.
We arrived on this shore over 400 years ago and took their resources and built an economy off of that. Before the USA came into being. We weren't special, in our opinion, but we were entitled in every sense of the word although some of the family drowned in the Atlantic.
The world will see more of this due to the planet going through drastic change and the growth of population. While my family had a charter to come here, at that time Europe was as crowded as it is now. There was no turning back.
We cannot hold onto a moment of time and stop the clock and say that all belongs to us. Would any man made law been able to stop us?
By what arrogance are we to assume others can die for our comfort, to hold onto an advanage when we didn't respect it for others in the past?
The world has seldom operated that way and a good deal of the waves of immigration we have seen are the results of our taking resources from other nations to build our economy. We crossed their borders with business interests or troops, flinging the door wide open. It is only fair it goes both ways.
I am the descendent of migrants who saw history as a thing that could not be denied. The natives could not deny us entry and no amount of their fighting back stopped us coming, the dam of our needs and desires burst upon them. The world will be transformed in the coming decades, and we need to be ready.
I understand what you say, and would like it all be tidy and neat for my own advantage. But I realize that I may not get my way.
Just sayin'

OP
You just took my own thoughts on this and put it to a beautiful and poignant prose.
