(362 posts)I am a stanch Democrat, but I do not believe in unbridled open immigration.
We certainly must care for these children and the mothers who are with them. But I don't agree with the opinion of many that we must let these kids in because they are escaping violent communities back home in Central America. By that logic, we should be welcoming in millions of Africans and Syrians.
And I also don't agree with allowing a family to enter the US just because one family member is here.
I certainly think that many of the people trying to get here would eventually become good citizens. But we're kidding ourselves if we believe that the large numbers are not a strain on us. The kids do go to school, they do go to emergency rooms. We can't pretend they don't.
I don't know the solution, but I don't believe that everyone who gets across the border gets to stay.

(17,997 posts)...what the economic impact of deporting 10 to 30 million people would be? Not pretty, I grant you that. I guess you'd have to pick your own tomatoes. It's funny, for one who states that you don't know the solution, you seem to have spelled out your solution quite distinctly...."I got mine! The rest of you, get the hell out!" So why should you be treated any differently? I assume you didn't just spring for the rocks and earth of North America and neither did your ancestors, so maybe you should be deported back to your ancestral country.
Reality.....you're NOT going to deport all existing illegals in this country. That's damn near impossible and economically stupid to boot. Reasonable, rational immigration is the answer. It's the only non-hypocritical answer.

(308 posts)Immigration is what's going to SAVE our asses demographically. Our fertility rate is low and we need people who can work to support the tax base when we age! The assumption that these people are nothing but leaches is disgusting. Every goddam one of us needs help in our lives. These immigrants are in a time of need, and it disgusts me when people suggest we turn our backs to them. Why not welcome them, educate them, care for them, and make them productive members of our society. They came here for a better life!
And also, we're all one family! We're all human... why would anyone hold a birthplace against anyone else? It's just like the racists, homophobes, etc. to blame these people for their current circumstances that they're trying desperately to improve.
santroy79
(193 posts)there are a lot of people coming here just because we feed them & cloth them and give them shelter & they have no thoughts about working and will tell you as much. I know a lot of them are not like this but at the same time a lot are

(5,610 posts)(wealth redistribution that is fair) and much more have to "come into play." No more health insurance companies...yes, socialized medicine like the other 1st world countries have.
ALL people deserve a job and a living wage.
There is enough (unjustified) wealth hoarders in America to pay for this many times over.
Of course we speed up the process of renewable energy, with the quality and productivity that Americans (the great "melting pot" have proven ourselves capable of. Only as our productivity rises, so do OUR wages, not the CEO's and stockholders. Co-ops are a great solution for that.
We already know most of the right answers, we allow "our betters(?)" to to keep us oppressed and poor. That is why these poorly educated (not deep thinkers at the best) fear and attack others that they feel superior to.

(14,602 posts)This was a shameful thing. These hate-filled xenophobes brought disgrace on our nation in general. To my mind, it brought back the fire hoses and dogs in Selma and Birmingham, the hate filled crowd of bigots attacking little children. Lift the rock and see the maggots of hatred.

(62 posts)My favorite bumper sticker of all time is one I saw over 30 years ago. It read "The Native Americans had lousy immigration laws." How true!!!
MrNJ
(200 posts)There's a right and wrong way to do immigration.
My parents had to apply at the embassy, paying interpreters to fill out countless papers, going through the interview, having medical examination, being directed towards the community that could accommodate us, being issued social security cards enabling us to start working almost right away.
Sneaking across the border, avoiding inspection, avoiding checks for potentially contagious infections, stressing the infrastructure of whatever unwilling community they choose ... sorry, there's a better way.
Sure, the U.S. is a nation of immigrants. But first and foremost we are the nation of laws.
My wife is also an immigrant. We went through the proper channels. Obtained a visa, went through the embassy, then application for citizenship, etc. There is a limit to the economic immigrants that crash our borders.

(10,597 posts)... our government can't find it in itself to update our immigration laws. Our immigration laws are a total wreck. I guess you would be in favor of an iron wall around our borders that you can see from the space station? And what about the businesses right here in America who transport & hire all those undocumented workers? What about the, what, 11 million illegal immigrants in this country that have lived here all their lives? You deport them all in one swoop? Do you have any idea how long and how much money it takes to go through our immigration process? Respectfully.
At every job that I had, at least half of the workers / employees were legal immigrants.
So it is possible to legally immigrate while within the framework of the current laws.
The immigration laws are not perfect but not a "total wreck" as you put it.
And yes, businesses should obey the laws or face penalties.

(141 posts)It's one thing to be legally employed here on an H-1. But unless that employer is willing to file the necessary paperwork for permanent residency, H-1 holders can't stay more than six years.

(6,228 posts)...support importing illegal immigrants to work jobs. They both have the same effect - go to a resident of a foreign country because they will work cheaper. Either support both or neither.
ReRe
(10,597 posts)... I support human beings. The only reason jobs are outsourced by The Corporation is because people in this country won't work for nothing. Then The Corp transports illegals here because they WILL work for almost nothing. Because it's more than they can make over there. It's all about cheap labor.

(6,699 posts)My wife also went through the process to immigrate to the US. It was a long road, but possible to make it legally, IF you have "a connection". We came up on a fiance' visa, married, and went through the "green card" to citizenship this past September. Wasn't that expensive, in my point of view. Cost maybe a few thousand dollars...about $700 for the fiance' visa, $700 for the temporary immigrant and another $700 for the permanent immigrant cards (green cards), and probably another $700 for application for citizenship. All the little fees added in: finger printing, medical work, etc.
But have you read ANYTHING about what is going on in Central America? with the gangs and drugs? There are documentaries out there that would make your hair curl on the back of your neck. There is NO WAY I would have my child grow up on those streets, if I could escape by any means. I think we have a nightmare on our southern borders, and we are fookin' around in the Middle East to keep the Israeli's safe, etc. How about we focus on our own back yard?? THIS is what is forcing these people to flee. It's not just economics. It's basic survival!

We have embraced ruthless dictators while wiping out democracy all to suit the narrow interests of U.S. corporations trying to profit from their misery.
Our insane so called "War on Drugs" is another catalyst driving them North.

continues heating up, the ground will lose more moisture to the air, and once the fertile land becomes desert, expect many more to cross.
The only real way to fix this situation is to address poverty, corruption, and crime in Mexico and Central America.
In Mexico they government and Monsanto has imposed GM corn onto the farmers. GM corn needs more water and fertilizer. That strains aquifers and causes salinization of groundwater. This will only accelerate desertification.
Unless we fight the corporatist who have put short term profit over all other considerations, we might join in on the mass extinction happening right now.

(53,661 posts)We arrived on this shore over 400 years ago and took their resources and built an economy off of that. Before the USA came into being. We weren't special, in our opinion, but we were entitled in every sense of the word although some of the family drowned in the Atlantic.
The world will see more of this due to the planet going through drastic change and the growth of population. While my family had a charter to come here, at that time Europe was as crowded as it is now. There was no turning back.
We cannot hold onto a moment of time and stop the clock and say that all belongs to us. Would any man made law been able to stop us?
By what arrogance are we to assume others can die for our comfort, to hold onto an advanage when we didn't respect it for others in the past?
The world has seldom operated that way and a good deal of the waves of immigration we have seen are the results of our taking resources from other nations to build our economy. We crossed their borders with business interests or troops, flinging the door wide open. It is only fair it goes both ways.
I am the descendent of migrants who saw history as a thing that could not be denied. The natives could not deny us entry and no amount of their fighting back stopped us coming, the dam of our needs and desires burst upon them. The world will be transformed in the coming decades, and we need to be ready.
I understand what you say, and would like it all be tidy and neat for my own advantage. But I realize that I may not get my way.
Just sayin'

(6,699 posts)...or some other Central American country TODAY. It is HELL. The gangs rule. The gangs have filled the prisons, and the governments are impotent to do anything. I wouldn't have my children grow up on those streets if there was ANY WAY to get out alive. It's gangs, drugs, murder and rape. A disgrace...and we are over in the Middle East fookin' around where we have no business being. Take care of our own back yard...NOW!!!!
I have a friend who has been a central american correspondent since reagans 'death squad' days. Not pretty what we helped to keep in power in that area. And it's just gotten worse. I would try to leave also. But most amerkkkaners can't see past their noses and won't believe anything unless it is fox news spoon fed to them. Sad indeed.

(141 posts)... ain't what is used to be. Thirty-some years ago, when my husband came here on a student visa for a PhD, the process of jumping through the hoops was relatively fast. Transitioning from H-1 wasn't then the nightmare it is now. From the wait while his job was advertized far and wide--and if any U.S. citizens met the requirements and wanted the position, they took priority (which I agree with). After that nail-biting time, that meant the labor clearance hurdle was done. Then the queue for the permanent residence (green card) status.
From the start of the labor clearance to obtaining the green card, I figure it was about six - eight months. Away back then. When Jesus rode dinosaurs, ya know.
Today (and in my opinion), the biggest problem for educated wannabe immigrants is trusting the would-be employer who claims, "Yes, sign this contract and I'll apply for your green card." An H-1 is good for three years with an optional three year extension. I can't tell you how many brilliant kids trust these sharks. And boy howdy, at the end of those six years, they find Employer XYZ had absolutely NO intention of filing the necessary paperwork.
Why should they bother? After all, there's a fresh crop of brilliant kids lined up to take their places.
