In reply to the discussion: Patronizing speeches about the middle class don't make up for fucking us with TPP [View all]pampango

India and China are not part of the TPP. Indeed neither of those huge countries like it and they both want to see it defeated. They know that meeting labor and environmental standards will damage the advantages that they have now.
Of the TPP countries we already have 'free trade' agreement with Canada, Mexico, Australia, Chile, Peru and Singapore. In essence we are renegotiating those to include labor rights, environmental standards, currency manipulation controls, etc. With the other countries, our trade is governed by WTO rules. If you prefer those, you are welcome to them.
TPP is more than a trade deal making it easier for corporations to outsource to slave labor in Asia.
I would say that is pretty darn easy to do under current trading rules. If labor rights, environmental protections and currency manipulation are added to trading rules, it will be harder for poor countries with weak unions and environmental laws to compete, not easier.
Oh, and I just love it when liberals refer to poor workers as 'slave labor'. Actual slaves might disagree with your terminology.
... don't let Obama steamroll you with rhetoric about TPP's ponies and rainbows. TPP has been written by corporations, for corporations. It is a shitty deal for REAL people.
republicans are way ahead of you on this. (And believe me republicans do not want Obama to "steamroll" them either.) They oppose TPP while Democrats support it. And conservative republicans oppose 'fast track' by 85% while liberal Democrats are the only group that support it.
