(31,818 posts)My mom did me a favor - as did my father by pointing out to me that I would have to run harder, play dirtier, work beyond everyone else in America.
They knew.
She's a white woman who shattered the glass ceiling in the hotel industry.
He was a black man who shattered it in manufacturing.
They didn't become VP's in te 1980's by a lot of "oh woe is me" bullshit.
They got there by throwing elbows.
And when you are a black woman in America - you have to throw elbows. Be stellar and do the work - but you are behind the 8 ball with gender and skin so be prepared to get vicious and lay waste to everyone in your path because you walk into the conference room filled with older white men who truly don't believe you have a right to be there.
Knowing my competitors believe I'm the lowest of the low has worked to my advantage on both the org chart and in pay scale.
