(36,437 posts)The out-and-out racism that is now allowed is the real tragedy of the jury system: not this faction or that faction, but large random numbers of posters who simply swim in white supremacy such that they can't even recognize it. It allows people like our friend up top to run roughshod with pure attacks against people of color, for fun apparently. It's getting to the point where PoC's are gonna leave en mass, because they're not respected by the forum enough to put a stop to this bullshit. Disgraceful. Admins should step in at some point. This isn't a faction v. faction issue.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Dec 26, 2014, 03:46 PM, and the Jury voted 2-5 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT

Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE

Would have gladly taken the hide on this, in any case. People need to stand up and say what's right on this board. It's slim civil disobedience to be sent to an online jury, but it's needed. We need to call racism on racism until these people know that posting that bullshit here will be swiftly met with derision.
If they want to time and run all POC and allies out behind that, so be it. It will be a shittier board as a result.
Meanwhile, bravenek's post #44 DOES get hidden?

Could not get the gravy to thicken up. It was pissing me off, I ended up dumping the jar into the gravy, about a cup or so, and then opened a new bag of flour which thickened the gravy up instantly.
I served the gravy not knowing I had put sugar into it. What do you know, with the exception of me, who thought it was way too sweet, everyone loved it. It finally dawned on me halfway through the meal how the gravy had gotten so sweet. There was not a drop left though.. Go figure

(31,818 posts)I watched this awhile back; not that I had any interest in the subject, I just like Chris Rocks comedy.
Two things stuck out for me...
One, the lengths, trouble and torture these woman will put themselves through.
Two, just how expensive some of this shit can get.
I'm talking $2,000 or more
The film focuses on the issue of how African-American women have perceived their hair and historically styled it. The film explores the current styling industry for black women, images of what is considered acceptable and desirable for African-American women's hair in the United States, and their relation to African American culture.[3]
Themes
Rock explores why black women adopt so many different styles for their hair. Techniques designed to straighten hair appear to be intended to give it characteristics of European (or "white" hair. Other styles create elaborate designs related to African traditions and recent innovations in fashion. Rock is quoted as saying, I knew women wanted to be beautiful, but I didnt know the lengths they would go to, the time they would spend and not complain about it. In fact, they appear to look forward to it.
Nia Long says, "Theres always this sort of pressure within the black community like, if you have good hair, youre prettier or better than the brown-skinned girl that wears the Afro or the dreads or the natural hairstyle."
In Jeannette Catsoulis' review of the film, she notes that Rock questions why African-American women adopt a concept of "beauty" that is not based on the natural characteristics of their hair. Some endure sometimes-painful hair treatments in order to achieve this definition of beauty. If the treatments, such as hair relaxers, are done improperly, they can cause hair loss or burns on the scalp. (Similarly and paradoxically, many ethnic European or Asian women with straight hair get permanents to curl their hair, and are at risk for similar burns and hair damage. Fashion has always involved manipulation of image, whether body, face or hair.)

(90,674 posts)I had the good fortune to have a nice holiday this year; we rolled all our holidays into one on Dec. 21. I think what really made it for me was doing up for the grandkids, of which we have only two. The 3 year old picked two wrapped packages, put them in the middle of the floor, and ran around them in circles. Among other things, I got the grands each a soft plushy throw/blanket; the 3 y.o. wrapped his around his shoulders like a little prince, then laid it on the floor and rolled himself up in it like a burrito. It doesn't get better.
My chronic depression has lifted some since the autumn -- I'm wary of saying that, afraid I'll jinx myself -- some things in my life seem to be moving forward, and that helps a lot. It enabled me to not only suddenly ask the family over (small family) but follow through and what is more to enjoy it.
And DU is just this habit I can't or won't break. Having already "done" Christmas/Hannukkah on the 21st, I actually spent Xmas Eve cruising DU, contributing very little in the way of comments, but saying "Hi" to my friends every so often. Mostly I skipped over OP after OP, going "stupid, stupid, stupid" in my head. It was just not bringing me down for once.
Don't let DU bring you down. It's not real the way it used to be. There are people I would really miss if I quit, like you, but they are few and far between in GD.
I have begun to wonder if there is some way those of us who want civility and boundaries could create a Group on the order of the BOG and AA to discuss "Politics 2015 And Beyond". The Forums now lack both civility and boundaries and there is little enforcement of either. Groups are smaller, more tightly knit, and the mods don't hesitate to kick ass. Just a thought.
Happy New Year Remember what you have in your life that is real and important, and hold on to that. Remember that nothing that happens here is as important as the people in front of you every day.
Sorry if I've gone on too long, but this has been on my mind. I hope you come back and read it.

(9,766 posts)Personally, I couldn't care less how ANY woman chooses to wear her hair.
The posts on cornrows today and the premise that those who wore them were 'appropriating' a culture surprised me. That it would be offensive to blacks if white woman chose to wear their hair in that manner...I don't get how that is somehow offensive now.
This thread has done little to clarify that in my mind.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Why is it racist to ask that question in response to the threads about whites sporting black hairstyles?
Why is the opposite question so offensive?
Why do we have to keep defining who we are by how we choose to look?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)You all barely know how to put them in. We don't go to white ladies to get our hair done. We come up with techniques that you guys could not invent.
Do you really think we learned how to do weaves from white folks? No. You have to attach hair and corn row the hair into a pattern, sew it together, then sew tracks of human hair onto the cornrow. You know nothing about black hair if you think its appropriation. It is assimilation. We needed to have our hair to look more like your to fit in. We actually get paid better if our hair looks more like yours. Its assimilation.
Now, not knowing anything about it, and not bothering to ask and just assuming you know is ignorant.
You wanna know about black hair? Ask black people. Don't try to talk about us behind our backs and get your laugh on.
White people constantly use our hair, speech, mannerisms and mode of dress as a source of endless mockery and amusement. This has been going on for centuries.
You certainly would not walk into a salon I use and say that stupid shit. First of all, everybody would laugh at you, then if you kept it up, you'd get handled.

It just bothers me when anyone, especially women, are judged by their hair, weight, clothes...in general how they look. If a white woman wants to wear cornrows or a black woman wants to blonde extensions...that's her choice and she shouldn't be judged.

As for what women of any ethnicity do with their hair, good grief. When I think of the things both my kids did with what was on their heads during their youth, including shaving it all off, and all of it was experimentation and personal statement.....

(22,336 posts)when that's a huge center of racism is an attack. African American women's hair is one place where they have always been heavily oppressed. They are constantly pushed to fit a racist narrow standard of beauty, and the hair is a big place where that push shows up.
Don't get after African American women about their hair. No one should do that. Not with the racist history behind people getting after African American women about their hair. In fact, not even history - it is still going on. We had a number of threads recently about the military's hair rules for women disqualifying every single natural hairstyle an African American woman could have. It is still going on.
Edited to add - why this is relevant is that African American women get huge amounts of shit for wearing corn rows, but then Katy Perry wears them and gets positive attention and accolades. Oh, she's so trendy and cool! African American women can't wear corn rows if they want to sell records, but Katy Perry can.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Fri Dec 26, 2014, 04:50 PM, and the Jury voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Initially was going to vote to leave it because the entire thread is a flamefest- but then I got educated on the meaning of "clown her ass" and I have to agree that there is no place for a post like this- even in this useless thread.
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: The urban dictionary is a pretty shitty reference. That's not what this means or was intended to mean.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: I think she meant definition 1
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: this may not be the most intelligent or thoughtful comment, but does it break community guidelines? I don't think so..
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #7 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Fuck you that is not what the meaning of clowning is here. Stupid fucking alert.

(24,544 posts)Clowning has been around forever and has NOTHING to do with sexual positions. Whoever put in that alert knows all too well how DU's demographics skew and thought they could use that to their advantage.
And if that "definition" of clowning is not the most RACIST SHIT I have ever seen here, I don't know what is.
I cannot believe the shit I'm seeing in this thread!!!!!!
JustAnotherGen
(31,818 posts)Here's the thing. . .
When someone shows me who they are - I believe them. Their worst words, thoughts and behavior is the core of who they are.
If it is really bad - I throw people out of my personal life like garbage. That's just me though and how I approach life.
Number23
(24,544 posts)Whoever put in that "definition" of clowning is not only trying to get bravenak hidden for absolutely no reason, but they have posted what I think has to be the single most ignorant, racist, offensive thing I have EVER seen about black people on DU.
I am begging you to please alert on those results. If there was a way I could alert on them myself, I definitely would.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)I haven't, but I'd be interested to hear if it ever has happened.
Personally I don't think the admins will do anything to the alerter. I was juror #3. The site "urbandictionary" is populated mostly by children and is pure shit. However, the alerter did provide reference to their alert text, whatever their actual intent was. I think the admins will give the alerter the benefit of the doubt, because they don't want to discourage people from alerting.
At any rate you can cut and paste the results into a DU message to the admins and it will have the same effect as an alert on the results. The reason I posted it in the first place was to give the alert more transparency, so feel free to do with it whatever you want.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business-to-government
Business-to-government (B2G) is a derivative of B2B marketing and often referred to as a market definition of "public sector marketing" which encompasses marketing products and services to various government levels - including federal, state and local - through integrated marketing communications techniques such as strategic public relations, branding, marcom, advertising, and web-based communications.
B2G networks provide a platform for businesses to bid on government opportunities which are presented as solicitations in the form of RFPs in a reverse auction fashion. Public sector organizations (PSOs) post tenders in the form of RFPs, RFIs, RFQs, Sources Sought, etc. and suppliers respond to them.
Government agencies typically have pre-negotiated standing contracts vetting the vendors/suppliers and their products and services for set prices. These can be state, local or federal contracts and some may be grandfathered in by other entities (i.e. California's MAS Multiple Award Schedule will recognize the federal government contract holder's prices on a General Services Administration Schedule).
There are multiple social platforms dedicated to this vertical market and they have risen in popularity with the onset of the ARRA/Stimulus Program and increased government funds available to commercial entities for both grants and contracts.

By that logic, let me see if I can find my kimono. I want to wear it while I swing my tomahawk and play my didgeridoo. Sure, according to Aboriginal Australian culture didgeridoos are only to played by men but hell, since NO ONE has a culture which means that NO ONE can steal it, surely they won't mind if my non-Australian, female ass plays it! Right?
And if they do mind, fuck him! They're just ignorant morons who don't understand that centuries old traditions and cultural norms are just there for the plucking for any fuckwit that wants to do them. Right???
