(523 posts)It's clear from McConnell's behavior that the Senate makes its rule anew with each impeachment, so precedents are hardly made from this (or any) impeachment.
Altho I am in favor of convicting Trump, I have to admit that it is obvious that BOTH sides have lined up along Party lines. To DUers (and some others) the Republicans who vote to impeach are heroes and the Democrats who vote against impeachment are traitors; but people on some other websites feel exactly opposite. A similar line-up occurred with the Clinton impeachment, with the Democrats voting the party line to acquit -- enough to prevent the conviction votes from amounting to 2/3 (altho a simple majority voted to convict). Somehow we didn't think the party solidarity for Clinton was an evil precedent but now that Trump gets a similar break we sing a different tune.
We may be stuck with Trump but we won't be stuck with troublesome precedents.
