As a yongster, I wrote Carter, Reagan, and Bush I. Reagan and Bush sent mass-produced signed photos. In Carter's defense, I didnt write him until after his ass whuppin'. He probably was done responding to mail by then.

Growing up in Arkansas, I didnt see many presidential visits, but when they happened, I almost always went. I was able to shake Clinton's hand at a Razorback basketball game once. They were really good then (natl champs in 1994, runners up in 1995), so he was coming to alot of games. I waited on the rope line for Bush II the night before he beat Gore. He made his way toward me, and we chatted about 20 seconda. I know complimenting him here is verboten, but he was quite friendly, teased me a little about the wisdom of standing in the light rain to see him. It would have lasted longer but a campaign aide made him move on. He seemed genuinely kind. I voted for Gore the next day.

These days, no way in hell I'd go see a Republican preisdent. Hell, I wouldnt go see half the supposed 2020 Dem candidates. I'm more choosy these days!
