Court: Subway Bread Doesn't Qualify as Bread
Sugar content is way too high, Irish court says

(Newser) Subway bread doesn't qualify for a value-added tax exemption because it doesn't meet the legal definition of "bread," or indeed "food" under the relevant law, Ireland's Supreme Court has decided. The court ruled that all six varieties of bread used in the company's sandwiches are far too sugary to officially qualify as bread, reports Food & Wine. The court found that Subway bread had a sugar content equivalent to 10% of the weight of the flour in the dough, when Irelands Value-Added Tax Act states that for a baked good to be exempt from the tax, ingredients like sugar and fat should not exceed 2% of the flour's weight, the Irish Independent reports.

The Agriculture Department last week began mandating that millions of boxes of surplus food for needy families include a letter from President Donald Trump claiming credit for the program.
The USDAs $4 billion Families to Farmers Food Box Program has distributed more than 100 million boxes to those in need since May, with the aim of redirecting meat, dairy and produce that might normally go to restaurants and other food-service businesses. But organizations handing out the aid complain the program is now being used to bolster Trumps image a month before a high-stakes election and some even have refused to distribute them.
In my 30 years of doing this work, I've never seen something this egregious, said Lisa Hamler-Fugitt, executive director of the Ohio Association of Food Banks. "These are federally purchased boxes.
The letter comes in both English and Spanish on White House letterhead and features Trumps bold signature: As President, safeguarding the health and well-being of our citizens is one of my highest priorities, it reads. As part of our response to coronavirus, I prioritized sending nutritious food from our farmers to families in need throughout America.
The move is the latest example of Trump using the levers of government and taxpayer dollars for self-promotion as he runs for re-election.

WASHINGTON Of the flood of misinformation, conspiracy theories and falsehoods seeding the internet on the coronavirus, one common thread stands out: President Donald Trump.
That is the conclusion of researchers at Cornell University who analyzed 38 million articles about the pandemic in English-language media around the world. Mentions of Trump made up nearly 38% of the overall misinformation conversation, making the president the largest driver of the infodemic falsehoods involving the pandemic.
The study, to be released Thursday, is the first comprehensive examination of coronavirus misinformation in traditional and online media.
