Sugar content is way too high, Irish court says

(Newser) – Subway bread doesn't qualify for a value-added tax exemption because it doesn't meet the legal definition of "bread," or indeed "food" under the relevant law, Ireland's Supreme Court has decided. The court ruled that all six varieties of bread used in the company's sandwiches are far too sugary to officially qualify as bread, reports Food & Wine. The court found that Subway bread had a sugar content equivalent to 10% of the weight of the flour in the dough, when Ireland’s Value-Added Tax Act states that for a baked good to be exempt from the tax, ingredients like sugar and fat should not exceed 2% of the flour's weight, the Irish Independent reports.

I feel like Ireland's government went too strict with the 2% standard.

9 grain bread, provolone cheese, toasted veggie with no dressing.

The other day, the worker said he never had anyone order with no dressing, but a guy earlier ordered 5 different dressing on his.

are good, but limited. French and Italian breads often have no sugar, but many of those recipes call for at least a small amount.

Most bread has at least some sugar. Or other sweetner like honey. It helps the yeast to grow and make the bread rise properly.

along with other ingredients, give the huge variety of breads that now exist.

I have a bread machine, which I don't use as often as I should, but my favorite bread recipe for it calls for a cup of some kind of whole grain cereal. I mostly use a banana nut crunch. Very flavorful bread. In fact, I made some a couple of days ago and I think I'll take a break from DU to make a slice of toast with it, then add butter and jam.

As opposed to sweetbreads which is something very different

Sweet bread is a valid kind of bread, an alternative to less sweet ones. Nothing wrong with that.

one is the idea that we need to tell poor people what they can or can't eat. I can't speak for the Irish, but in the US the government funds coen production which is then used in every junk food out there.....but we want to tell pood people that they have to eat only the foods we approve to use assistance.

Second.....all breads break down in the body as glucose, so they are all sugar. The only difference is the speed at which that happens, but unless this Irish court is also going to rule that white enriched flour is also off limits, this is a pretty bad rule.

I spent the whole summer there in 2019 and had a hard time eating healthy unless you were at expensive restaurants or a grocery store which is hard when staying at small B&B's or hotels.

Most small cafes or pubs don't offer any salads or low fat offerings.

My stomach had a hard time, I would go to health food stores in larger towns and buy snacks and nuts there and fresh fruit. After seeing how they all cooked I started eating plain yogurt and fruit for breakfast because their eggs even scrambled had too much butter in it.

I had planned before I went to order soup in the pubs but most of them added so much pepper I couldn't handle it.
