Controversy Grows Over PVA ["Biodegradable"] Detergent Pods
NYC Exploring a Ban on PVA Detergent Pods As Research Indicates False Biodegradable Claims from ManufacturersDC Report link: https://www.dcreport.org/2024/03/03/controversy-grows-over-pva-detergent-pods/
As you might have seen recently, there is a growing controversy over those convenient little detergent pods that so many of us use to wash our clothes and dishes.
Whats the big deal? In short, PVA or polyvinyl alcohol is plastic. While its a material we all use, its also marketed within the pod industry as being eco-friendly, biodegradable and even all natural. The plastic, PVA coating on the pods holds the detergent and dissolves away once it makes contact with water, thus releasing the detergent from within.
The concern begins when we ask what happens to that plastic coating, says Dr. Charlie Rolsky, co-author of the study that has sparked the controversy and executive director of the Shaw Institute, in Blue Hill, Maine. PVA is water soluble, just like sugar or salt, which once added to water, disappears in time, but as we can taste, still very much remains within the water itself. The same is true of PVA.
Forbes, Bloomberg, Fast Company, The Washington Post and many other large media outlets have been reporting on this for nearly two years, as Rolskys study suggests that manufacturers of PVA detergent pods are falsely claiming them to be biodegradable and/or eco-friendly.

It's another great rant by Jeff Tiedrich.
Also Tiedrich says more on Chump's gibberish language, called "phonemic paraphrasing" by some experts. It's a sign of dementia and Chump is showing it regularly during his rally speeches. He can't think of the right word so he makes up a word that sounds like it means the same thing. This has been remarked on by Chump's critics (including Tiedrich) but it's almost never mentioned in the news media. They gloss over it, or they edit it out in their regular reporting.
Tiedrich's point is that the media keeps harping on "Joe Biden's age" non-issue, but they completely ignore the obvious signs of dementia shown by Chump.
Today's Tiedrich rant: dumb-ass Trumpers are getting scammed by grifters selling fake money

if some skeevy dude sidled up to you on the street, offered to sell you Biden Bucks and told you theyd make you rich, youd roll your eyes. no, seriously, youre told. Joe Bidens going to change the banking system, and these Biden Bucks are going to be worth millions.
at that point, youd tell them to fuck straight off. all of which makes you smarter than a Trump cultist. its a wise old saying: a Trump supporter and his money are soon parted. Donnys been hip to this for years. theres no end to the cheesy grifts he uses to separate the rubes from their social security checks.
Screenshot:
remember those idiotic NFT trading cards, the childish JPEGs depicting Trump as Superman, a cowboy, and Elvis? Trump harvested millions in cash from selling them to credulous dopes. youll be shocked to learn theyre now worthless. ...
which brings us to Trump Bucks. nitwits have been shelling out thousands of dollars for these worthless items, because theyve been sold a fantasy.

Supporters are told Trump Bucks will propel Donald Trumps 2024 presidential bid and make the real patriots who support him rich when he wins and they can cash in. How would it work? According to NBC News, those who got duped believe Trump, when he is re-elected, will institute a new monetary system that will make Trump Bucks valuable.

Reuters: US carries out first airdrop of aid into Gaza, officials say
Reuters link: https://www.reuters.com/world/us-carries-out-first-airdrop-aid-into-gaza-officials-say-2024-03-02/
WASHINGTON, March 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. military on Saturday carried out its first airdrop of humanitarian aid into Gaza, two U.S. officials said. The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the airdrop was carried out using three C-130 planes. One of the officials said more than 35,000 meals were airdropped.
The White House has said the airdrops will be a sustained effort, and that Israel was supportive of the airdrops.
Other countries including France, Egypt and Jordan have carried out airdrops of aid into Gaza. At least 576,000 people in the Gaza Strip - one quarter of the enclave's population - are one step from famine, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
With people eating animal feed to survive and medics saying children are dying from malnutrition and dehydration, the U.N. has said it faces "overwhelming obstacles" getting in aid.

This is an interesting commentary on how Pennsylvania's ballot order selection differs from other states. There's no question that the top position on any ballot - in any state - is the best spot for a candidate to be in. How those top spots are determined makes all the difference to candidates and voters.
As a voter, do you often select the first name on the list of candidates? I don't think I do, but I plan to pay closer attention this time. One thing I know for sure is when I receive my mailed ballot, I have time to research the entire candidates list before I make my choice. When voting in person (before Covid made mailed ballots possible) I didn't have that luxury.
Ballot order is critical for candidates. In Pa., it's determined by luck.

As Sajda Blackwell approached the front of the room, she did a little dance of excitement a shimmy as she pumped both fists in the air.
All right, all right, she said, as the woman standing in front of her shook a green leather bag filled with number tiles in preparation for Blackwell a candidate for the 10th legislative district in west Philadelphia to select one. Thirty-five, I feel alive, she sang after pulling out her tile.
This wasnt a game of chance at the local American Legion outpost. Instead, it was an official function of the Pennsylvania Department of State, held in Harrisburg last week. State House candidates had gathered to draw numbers establishing the order in which they would appear on the upcoming primary ballot.
A tile numbered between 31 and 40 is pulled from the bag, and the lower the number, the higher a given candidate appears on the ballot. The peculiar process, prescribed by the states Election Code, is how election officials ensure fairness in selecting who gets the coveted top ballot position.

A simple way to get microplastics out of your water
Archived (no paywall) link: https://archive.ph/BnyBU
Tiny plastic particles can seem alarmingly ubiquitous and nearly impossible to get rid of theyve been found in food, breast milk and even clouds. But new research suggests that a simple solution could reduce microplastics in drinking water: boiling it.
In a new paper published Wednesday in the journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters, Zhanjun Li and Eddy Y. Zeng report that boiling and filtering water helped remove up to nearly 90 percent of the tiny plastic particles, which they write can be found in 129 of 159 tap water samples from 14 countries worldwide. The impact of consuming these tiny particles still is not well understood. A recent report from the World Health Organization noted a number of possible health risks posed by exposure to microplastics, but also said that more research needs to be done....
Why boiling water works to reduce microplastics
For their study, Li and Zeng, professors at Guangzhou Medical University and Jinan University, respectively, created simulated tap water with all of the commonly occurring minerals and chemicals and microplastics. They wanted to understand whether simply boiling water would be effective at removing the tiny plastic particles.
What they found was dramatic especially in hard water, or water with large concentrations of minerals like calcium and magnesium. At high enough temperatures, calcium carbonate (which is commonly found in tap water) will become solid, effectively encapsulating or encrusting the plastic particles, and making them easy to remove through a simple filter, such as a coffee filter.

Great rant by Tiedrich, including some silly/funny gifs for those who enjoy that sort of thing... (and I do!)
Also a great rant on the US Supreme Court, and their apparent willingness to allow Chump another delay, when we all know their ruling will be final and inevitable: "No Donny you don't have presidential immunity, and this is all complete bullshit." But as long as SCOTUS plays along, the clock keeps ticking towards our general election on November 5th. Will Chump still be standing then?

Little Donny Fuckface is good at exactly one thing: bullshitting. its his whole business model: conning the rubes into believing hes the savviest honcho who ever lived. its how he got banks to lend him money by tricking them into believing his shitty properties were worth billions.
its how he got investors to finance his failing casinos by filling their heads with nonsense about how he was going to make them rich. and its how he became president by conning low-information voters into believing he was going to personally buy each of them a pony.
which is why its super fucking hilarious that yesterday, the bullshitting bullshitter who claimed in 2015 to be worth TEN BILLION DOLLARS had to admit to a judge that he cant come up with the money he needs to appeal the Big Trump Family Business Fraud Fuckery judgment.
... please let me off the hook, judge he whined, offering to pay less than 25 cents on the dollar a classic slumlord move but Associate Justice Anil Singh was all no, fuck straight off with that nonsense.

The congresswoman faced criticism because other speakers had made antisemitic comments

Since getting elected to the U.S. House in November 2022 as one of the youngest Democrats, and the first Black to represent Pittsburgh, Ms. Lee has become tight with the progressive "Squad" as well as the Congressional Black Caucus. No problem there, but since last year, she has spoken against Israel in the media; she voted against the congressional bi-partisan non-binding resolution H. Res. 771 supporting Israel in the wake of the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.

WASHINGTON U.S. Rep. Summer Lee (D) PA-12 said Tuesday that she would not attend the banquet of an Islamic group after facing blowback from Democrats and Republicans over antisemitism allegations directed at some of those involved in the event.
Ms. Lee, D-Swissvale, said on the social media site X that she was unaware of some of the previous comments of others scheduled to speak alongside her at the Council on American-Islamic Relations Philadelphia chapters annual banquet this Saturday.
To prevent the Muslim community from being the target of any more politically motivated Islamophobia and to ensure my Jewish and LGBTQ+ constituents know their concerns are heard, I will not be attending this event any longer, she said.
Other scheduled speakers included former basketball player Ibrahim Jaaber, who called Jews demons and said they cover their horns in a post on X; and Islamic scholar Yasir Fahmy, who called Zionism a sick and sadistic, ideological cult. The background of these speakers were first reported by Jewish Insider.

How PA vets its voting machines, how the state keeps them safe, and more
Spotlight PA link: https://www.spotlightpa.org/news/2024/02/pennsylvania-voting-machines-elections-101-prebunking/
During what is likely to be another contentious presidential election in Pennsylvania, you may hear contradictory, confusing, or downright false claims about voting machines. Politicians in the past few elections have promoted fabricated claims about how they work or taken advantage of routine problems to cast doubt on their security and accuracy.
In Pennsylvania, all voting machines produce paper ballots that can be audited. This allows election officials to verify the accuracy of the outcome long after voting has concluded. These systems are tested twice, once at the federal and once at the state level, before going into service. Before each election, each machine that will be used is tested again to ensure it works properly.
Despite these security measures, politicians have seized on human error or completely invented information to cast doubt on election results. In November 2020, former President Donald Trump amplified false claims that Dominion Voting Systems machines switched 221,000 votes from himself to Joe Biden in Pennsylvania. He made numerous such claims as part of a larger, concerted effort to overturn the results of the presidential election.
Ahead of the 2024 election, Spotlight PA and Votebeat spoke with state officials about the status of Pennsylvania's voting machines, how the devices are certified, and how counties select them.

Something that pundits haven't mentioned is that Chump was the CEO of the Chump Family Organizations, but it's not just his own wealth he's losing. It's the inherited wealth of all his siblings and their heirs. It's all going to be seized, or at least as much as Letitia James can grab to satisfy the court fines. Two brothers are dead and his older sister Marianne Trump Barry passed in November 2023. But there's still one younger sister living plus a passel of nieces and nephews. They're all going to be on the unemployment lines soon.

financially, Donald Trump is Wile E. Coyote right now, twenty feet past the edge of the cliff and refusing to look down. hes in complete denial about how truly screwed he is, and he still imagines hes fully in control of the situation. the fuck you are, numbnuts.
about 1:30pm yesterday my phone started blowing up with notifications from every news outlet. they all reported more or less the same story: Trump Appeals New York Civil Fraud Verdict.
Screenshot:
huh, where did Trump get the money? I said to myself, as I started tapping on the notifications, eager to find out because remember, Trump cant appeal without first ponying up 120% of the $465 million (and counting) hes on the hook for after losing the Big Trump Family Business Fraud Fuckery Trial.
but that initial rush of reporting made no mention of money because, in a mad dash to post a scoop, the press once again breathlessly reported only what Team Trump told them: that hed filed an appeal. end of story. thanks again, media!
