Trump's next attack on democracy: mass voter suppression, by our Russ Feingold

Trump's next attack on democracy: mass voter suppression

I would expect these actions from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, or any of the other authoritarian regimes we have sanctioned around the world – regimes that stay in power by suppressing their people and manipulating election results. We must not lie to ourselves when we see the warning signs here at home. This commission is a harbinger of a top-down, White House-endorsed assault on voters, specifically Democratic voters: the same voters who denied Trump the popular vote.

Hillary Clinton would be president right now if Obama had gone public in September or October

GUARDIAN ARTICLE, BEST I HAVE READ.

In Obama’s defense, there were valid reasons for slow-walking an American response to Putin. The president was rightly concerned about provoking a Russian cyber-attack on voting machines on Election Day. And Obama and his top aides brooded over whether any public announcement would merely feed Trump’s bleats about a “rigged” election.

In hindsight, it was the wrong call.

Democracy requires openness and honesty in the belief that the voters can handle the truth. But Obama, confident in Clinton’s electoral prospects, instead chose stealth and indirection. A governmental statement in early October about Russia’s “active measures” did not even mention Putin by name. And within minutes, that hedged three-paragraph document was upstaged by the release of Trump’s “Access Hollywood” tape about the joys of grabbing women’s private parts.

A presidential race decided by 78,000 votes in three states was awash with might-have-beens. In all likelihood, Hillary Clinton would be president right now if Obama had gone public in September or October with what he knew about Putin’s efforts to pilfer the election. But even if such presidential truth telling had boomeranged politically, it would have set a name-and-shame precedent about how the United States responds to all foreign efforts to tamper with an election.

Former senior Obama official said. I feel like we sort of choked. (Washington Post)

Obama weighed pre-election retaliation against Moscow for the Russian assault on the US election. The Obama administration debated dozens of options for deterring or punishing Russia, including cyberattacks on infrastructure, the release of CIA material to embarrass Putin, and sanctions that could “crater” the Russian economy.

Instead, he expelled 35 Russian diplomats and closed two compounds. Obama also approved an operation in late December to embed "digital bombs" in Russia’s infrastructure that could be detonated if the US found itself in an escalating exchange with Moscow. The project was still in its planning stages when he left office, leaving Trump to decide whether to use the capability.

“It is the hardest thing about my entire time in government to defend,” a former senior Obama official said. “I feel like we sort of choked.” (Washington Post)

Thank the Buddha that we finally have a non neoliberal to challenge Ryan

Thank the Buddha that we finally have a non neoliberal to challenge Ryan who is truly the most horrendous being on the planet. I am not a violent person and am 66 years old but Ryan is the only person on the planet who I would love to use my karate on. Hopefully he will open the eyes of the working class imbeciles who voted for our first Orange president.

Randy Bryce has a different set of values, forged on the work sites of Wisconsin. “My values are my neighbors’ values, and we know that Washington has gotten way off track,” says the challenger. If Bryce keeps emphasizing how and why Paul Ryan steered things off track, he has a chance to change the political debate—and the values debate that must underpin it if anything is ever going to change—in Wisconsin and America.

FL new charter school law screws students

FL passes new school bill. Calling it dangerous and a slush fund for charter schools.

GAVIN: Some charter schools in Miami-Dade county even offered students extra credit if they told the governor they supported the bill. And in the end, Governor Rick Scott chose to sign it at one of Florida’s charter schools that will be receiving funding as a result of the bill.

GOVERNOR SCOTT: We can look at these students, all these smiling faces, their lives will be better. They’ll have the opportunity to live their dreams in this country.
