How does California plan on enforcing mandatory mask wearing?

Does Newsom want people to hate cops even more than they already do right now?? Misdemeanor for not wearing a mask??

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday ordered all Californians to wear face coverings while in public or high-risk settings, including when shopping, taking public transit or seeking medical care, following growing concerns that an increase in coronavirus cases has been caused by residents failing to voluntarily take that precaution. Newsom’s order comes a week after Orange County rescinded a requirement for residents to wear masks and as other counties across California are debating whether to join other local jurisdictions in mandating face coverings. The Newsom administration did not address how the new requirement will be enforced or if Californians who violate the order will be subject to citations or other penalties.

“Simply put, we are seeing too many people with faces uncovered — putting at risk the real progress we have made in fighting the disease,” Newsom said in a statement. “California’s strategy to restart the economy and get people back to work will only be successful if people act safely and follow health recommendations. That means wearing a face covering, washing your hands and practicing physical distancing.”

Until now, state public health officials had only recommended that Californians wear the face coverings which, if worn by someone with the virus, have been shown to decease chances of spreading it to others. The Sacramento Bee on Wednesday first reported that the Newsom administration was considering a statewide face covering requirement.

Under state law, residents who violate the new requirement could be charged with a misdemeanor and potentially face a financial penalty, according to a representative for the Newsom administration. However, officials have shied away from enforcing other statewide coronavirus mandates with similar actions, choosing instead to encourage compliance and educate residents about the benefits of safeguards against spread of the virus.

FBI used a Philly protester's Etsy profile, LinkedIn, and other internet history to charge her

As demonstrators shouted, fires burned outside City Hall, and Philadelphia convulsed with outrage over the death of George Floyd, television news helicopters captured footage of a masked woman with a peace sign tattoo and wearing a light blue T-shirt setting a police SUV ablaze.

More than two weeks after that climactic May 30 moment, federal authorities say they’ve identified the arsonist as 33-year-old Philadelphia massage therapist Lore Elisabeth Blumenthal by following the intricate trail of bread crumbs she left through her social media history and online shopping patterns over the years.

The path took agents from Instagram, where amateur photographers also captured shots of the masked arsonist, to an Etsy shop that sold the distinctive T-shirt the woman was wearing in the video. It led investigators to her LinkedIn page, to her profile on the fashion website Poshmark, and eventually to her doorstep in Germantown.

Their pursuit, described in court filings this week, sheds light on the extent to which the FBI and Justice Department have used news footage, online histories, and social media footprints to track down and identify demonstrators believed to be responsible for acts of violence or property destruction.

But civil rights advocates say it also raises questions about the scope of law enforcement surveillance of protest movements and the use of the very social media networks that protesters have relied upon to spread their message.

“Social media has fueled much of the protests, and has also become a fertile ground for government surveillance,” said Paul Hetznecker, an attorney who has organized a group of lawyers to represent demonstrators, including Blumenthal. “I think people have lost awareness of that.”

Christopher Columbus statue will be removed from California state house

Source: cnn

Washington (CNN)A statue of Christopher Columbus will be removed from California's state capitol in Sacramento, state lawmakers announced Tuesday.

The statue, titled "Columbus' Last Appeal to Queen Isabella," has been in the center of the California Capitol Rotunda since 1883, when it was first gifted to the state. In a joint statement, legislative leadership called the statue "completely out of place."

"Christopher Columbus is a deeply polarizing historical figure given the deadly impact his arrival in this hemisphere had on indigenous populations," the announcement from Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Assembly Rules Committee Chair Ken Cooley reads.

"The continued presence of this statue in California's Capitol, where it has been since 1883, is completely out of place today. It will be removed," the statement says.

Armed vigilantes under scrutiny after statue protester shot in New Mexico

Source: guardian

Officials are scrutinizing armed vigilante groups in New Mexico following the shooting of a protester calling for the removal of a controversial colonial statue. Police are examining whether the shooter belonged to New Mexico Civil Guard, whose members were out in force at the Monday demonstration in Albuquerque. The group has become a familiar and controversial presence at protests over racial injustice across the state. Protesters have accused it , and other militias, of intimidating and profiling people of color.

“I am horrified and disgusted beyond words by the reports of violence and the protest,” the New Mexico governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, tweeted in response to the Monday shooting, adding that the “heavily armed individuals” were there for one reason: “To menace protesters and to present an unsanctioned show of unregulated force.” “The ranks of these militias are populated with ex-cops and military,” said David Correia, a University of New Mexico police violence researcher. “They understand themselves as police, and police understand them as police.”

Officials say that Steven Ray Baca, 31, shot a protester as he and others attempted to bring down a statue of the Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate, for many a symbol of racism and oppression. Baca is the son of the former sheriff of Bernalillo county. The shooting occurred during a clash between demonstrators and the NM Civil Guard, who were seen creating a protective circle around the gunmen following the shooting. Thirteen guns and 34 magazines of ammunition were recovered at the scene. The group has denied any role in the shooting or connection to Baca.

NYPD officers get sick after drinking milkshakes, union claims intentional poisoning

Source: abc7

NEW YORK CITY -- Three NYPD police officers are being treated at a hospital after they apparently fell ill after drinking milkshakes. The incident was reported at a Shake Shack restaurant on Broadway in Lower Manhattan on Monday evening. Police say the officers began to feel sick while still drinking the shakes.

They were transported to a local hospital and are all said to be stable. It's not yet clear what caused them to feel sick, but the Detectives' Endowment Association tweeted that the officers were "intentionally poisoned." The police union wrote that "a toxic substance, believed to be bleach, had been placed in their beverages." It was not discovered until they drank some of those beverages. The officers were being treated at the hospital and were expected to recover.

The PBA has since warned all of its members to carefully inspect any prepared food items they purchase while on duty.

Calls Grow to Remove Statue of Lincoln, Freed Black Man in Boston

Thousands have signed a petition to remove a statue depicting former President Abraham Lincoln standing before a freed Black man on his knees.

"This is not about Lincoln, this is about the figure that’s supposed to represent my people - naked, kneeling in front of him," petition creator Tory Bullock said. "I think there are lot of creative ideas we can use to change that situation."

Bullock, of Boston, said the statue in the city’s Park Square has bothered him since he was a child, often asking himself, “if he’s free, why is he still on his knees?” His petition to remove the replica of the Emancipation Memorial in Washington had nearly 8,000 signatures as of Monday morning.

The petition caused Boston’s mayor to consider the fate of the statue. The Boston Globe reports that Mayor Marty Walsh is in favor of removing it and replacing it with something that recognizes equality. Walsh’s office said the administration is looking into the process required to make the change.

Meanwhile, protests against police violence continue and controversial statues have been vandalized across the state and the country. The statue of Christopher Columbus in Boston's North End was put into storage last week after vandals removed its head.

At least 7 Minneapolis cops have quit in wake of George Floyd's death

Several Minneapolis Police Department officers have decided to leave their jobs in the aftermath of George Floyd's death. At least seven employees have left the department, CBS Minnesota reports. City officials say that number does not include the four former officers involved in Floyd's death.

MPD officials did not specify if the departures are specifically due to Floyd's death, but the decisions to leave were made recently.

In a statement obtained by CBS Minnesota, MPD officials said in part that people seek to leave employment for "myriad" reasons and said the MPD is "no exception."

"Due to these employment separations, we have not noted any indicators that would impact public safety," the MPD said.

The department has been under fire following the death of Floyd on Memorial Day. A medical examiner ruled that Floyd was killed after former officer Derek Chauvin placed his knee on Floyd's neck for almost 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Since then, protesters have been calling for justice against the officers involved. All four have been fired and charged with crimes.

The Minneapolis City Council is also exploring other ways of keeping the city safe if the police department was ever defunded.

Meanwhile, Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota told CNN on Saturday that now is the time for the city of Minneapolis to make real changes and stood behind her message of dismantling the MPD.

"You can't really reform a department that is rotten to the root. What you can do is rebuild, and so this is our opportunity," Omar said.

Kudlow says $600 additional unemployment checks will end in July

Source: politico

National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow reiterated Sunday the $600 additional weekly unemployment benefit created to aid those who lost their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic will end in late July. "I mean, we're paying people not to work. It's better than their salaries would get," he said on CNN's "State of the Union."

"That might have worked for the first couple of months. It'll end in late July," he added, saying the extra benefit was necessary during the height of the coronavirus lockdowns. Kudlow said that "almost all businesses" understand the $600 additional benefit is "a disincentive." He said the Trump administration is instead "looking at a reform measure" that will provide an incentive for returning to work, but it will not be as substantial.

"It will not be as large, and it will create an incentive to work," he said. "That goes along with the other incentives we've generated, the tax rebates and, most particularly ... the Payroll Protection Program, which I think was a huge success." Kudlow was pressed by CNN host Jake Tapper on the idea that Americans don't want to return to work. Tapper pointed out that some Americans' jobs aren't coming back — a point Kudlow called "fair."

"I personally agree with you. I think people want to go back to work," Kudlow responded. "I think they welcome the reopening of the economy, and I think they're anxious to get out and about." "However, at the margin, incentives do matter," he added. "We have heard from business after business, industry after industry, and there's already some evidence that this effect is taking place." The House-passed Heroes Act would extend the $600 additional weekly unemployment benefit through the end of January 2021. The Senate has not passed similar legislation.

Polish president calls LGBT 'ideology' worse than communism

WARSAW, Poland -- Polish President Andrzej Duda accused the LGBT rights movement Saturday of promoting a viewpoint more harmful than communism and said he agreed with another conservative politician who stated that “LGBT is not people, it's an ideology.” Duda made his comments in the small southwestern town of Brzeg as he campaigns for reelection in Poland, a predominantly Catholic nation that spent more than four decades under communist governments.

Gay rights is emerging as a key campaign theme in the presidential election as the race grows close between Duda, backed by the nationalist conservative ruling party, and Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who has called for tolerance for gays and lesbians. Duda, who is 48, told his supporters that his parents' generation did not struggle to cast off communism only to now accept “an ideology” that he thinks "is even more destructive to the human being."

The president said that during Poland's communist era, regimes ensured survival by indoctrinating the youngest generation. “That was Bolshevism. It was the ideologizing of children,” he said. “Today, there are also attempts to push an ideology on us and our children, but different. It’s totally new, but it is also neo-Bolshevism.” Earlier in the week, Duda signed a declaration drafted for the stated purpose of helping families that included language on “protecting children from LGBT ideology” with a ban on “propagating LGBT ideology in public institutions."

Many conservative politicians in Poland say they are not against gay men and lesbians as individuals, but insist they oppose the goals of a civil rights movement they claim is imported from abroad and threatens to sexualize young people. But gay and lesbian Poles and liberal Poles say government officials are adopting a language of dehumanization. They believe Duda and others are targeting homosexuals to curry favor with the powerful Catholic church — which faces allegations of covering up clerical abuse — and shore up support among conservative voters ahead of the election.
