Forget Happy Holidays. Lets talk about Congress this Christmas.

From the article:

That’s why we believe that Christians should set aside time amid the Christmas bustle to reflect on Congress.
Talking about public policy may not seem like a festive activity, but it is sorely needed. In 2017, many in the halls of power misrepresented and mislabeled those in need. People who struggle were often painted as lazy, dependent on the government, and responsible for their own problems.

What Does the Number Forty (40) Mean or Represent in the Bible?

From the article:

The number forty usually has to do with testing in the Bible. There are dozens of examples to show this and we will examine a few to see why this is so. From Jesus to the children of Israel in the Wilderness, the number forty shows that testing and trials are sometimes associated with this number and so we read in the Scriptures that the number forty generally symbolized a period of testing, trial or probation. As has been said, a faith that is not tested cannot be trusted.

Exodus: An Allegorical Portrait of the Human Mind in its Relationship to God

From the short article:

Midrash is not purely a scholarly endeavor, because its goal is not scholarship per se. Rather, midrashic interpretation reflects an ongoing attempt to unearth the hidden truth latent in scripture........and reveal the pure shining essence of divine wisdom..........

As the Passover Haggadah makes abundantly clear, the story of Moses and Pharaoh applies to all of us, now, in the present tense. We’re enjoined to celebrate as if God had led us personally from bondage in Egypt.......

So, what is this midrash? How can we use it to bring forth the true colors of Exodus? We start with the understanding that Exodus is far more than just a simple story about winning freedom. It is an allegorical portrait of the human mind. Its two central characters—Pharaoh and Moses—are not just historical figures, not just characters in a biblical drama. They are archetypes that portray opposing aspects of the human mind in its relationship to Spirit.....

I write this partly in response to some posters here who apparently insist on a literal interpretation of the Bible. Perhaps because it allows them to feel that by refuting a literal interpretation of certain passages, such as Exodus, that they are somehow refuting the existence of the Creator.

And, as has been said before, when I was a child, I thought as a child. When I was very young, the Bible stories seemed to me to be literal descriptions of things that had actually happened.

But in my years at a Jesuit university, I was exposed to a far more complex view of the Bible.

The Exodus story, while it makes for interesting reading if read as a story, is actually about the spiritual wandering that took place as a people found God. Similar to the story about Saul of Tarsus, whose revelation was presented as being struck from his horse.

The GOP is all about freedom. When will DU realize that?

The GOP is all about freedom. Examples are many, but here are just a few.

1) The GOP believes in your freedom to not purchase unaffordable and useless health insurance.

2) The GOP believes in your freedom to work for the lowest wage offered, and in a non-union shop.

3) The GOP believes in the freedom of financial institutions to charge exorbitant interest rates to its average customers.

4) The GOP believes in the freedom of the rich to hide their money in overseas tax havens.

5) The GOP believes in your freedom to work until you drop dead because you cannot afford to retire.

6) The GOP believes that corporations are free people.

7) The GOP believes that everyone should be free to purchase politicians.

It is all about freedom people.

Obstacles to dialogue about religion:

There is a recent post that asked what is accomplished by the constant dialogue in this forum.

Some responders admitted that no conversion is likely to take place. But even if one were to admit of a possibility of conversion, it seems to me that there is one huge obstacle to any actual dialogue.

That obstacle is the tendency of some few here to treat any argument in favor of religion as a childish argument, and as evidence of rejection of knowledge in favor of superstition.

That position requires the complete rejection of the non-overlapping magisteria argument in favor of demanding proof from believers of the truth of their beliefs. Forcing believers to argue in scientific terms. And I understand the motive behind this tactic because it allows non-believers to feel that they have proven something, or won a debate.

The main obstacle to dialogue, the condescending attitude, is often phrased quite overtly, as any reading of some of the posts here will reveal, but often it is more of a sub-text when a poster chooses to write with a veneer of politeness and tolerance.

And it has been my experience that this attitude is most often demonstrated by one side of this debate.

I am a Christian who freely admits that faith is a belief in the unprovable.

And in debate here, I will not mock atheists for their own unprovable position, nor will I dismiss their arguments as childish, or uninformed, because I believe that such tactics alienate people.

Have I missed Roy Moore's concession speech?

I have been busy at times, and sometimes miss some of the news, so I was wondering if Moore finally conceded.

If he did, please post a link so I can read his heartfelt and sincere congratulations to the new Senator from Alabama.

Whats next for religion in 2018?

From the article:

2018 will be a year where interfaith work will be about recalibrating our nation’s moral and ethical social agenda.
2018 will be the year that churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, gurdwaras and sacred spaces will work together to protect the most vulnerable.

Appropriate seasonal greetings to all who read in this group.

While we disagree on much, the fact that we identify as Democrats also means we agree on many things.

Religion is simply not one of those things.
