White House claims failing its own pandemic exercise proves it was prepared

By Dan Desai Martin -May 14, 2020 6:21 PM

A 2019 pandemic exercise only foreshadowed the mistakes the Trump administration has made so far during the coronavirus crisis.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany claimed on Thursday that the Obama administration had left behind an "insufficient" pandemic response plan, and that Donald Trump had replaced it with a superior version that left his team completely prepared to face the current coronavirus crisis.

"The Obama-Biden plan that has been referenced was insufficient," McEnany said during a press gaggle, citing the former administration's pandemic playbook, first reported by Politico back in March.

She then bragged that the Trump administration had instead put together "an entire 2018 pandemic preparedness report," and "did a whole exercise on pandemic preparedness in August of last year and had an entire after-action report put together" on the matter.

The "Obama-Biden paper packet," McEnany claimed, was replaced with a "Trump-style pandemic preparedness response plan."

Dollar climbs to three-week peak; U.S. jobs data shrugged off

BUSINESS NEWS MAY 13, 2020 / 8:42 PM / UPDATED 25 MINUTES AGO

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The dollar rose to a three-week high on Thursday, as stock markets weakened broadly after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell dismissed speculation over U.S. interest rates entering negative territory.

European stock markets fell, and U.S. stocks were also down, the third consecutive session of losses and sending investors to the relative safety of the greenback.

Comments from top U.S. infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci earlier this week, warning about the premature lifting of lockdowns that could lead to additional outbreaks of the deadly novel coronavirus, also dented market sentiment, analysts said.

“This whole week has been fairly risk off. There’s a lot of factors to point to, from Powell, to Fauci, to Trump,” said John Doyle, vice president of dealing and trading, at Tempus Inc. in Washington.

“Still, the dollar is king when this happens,” he added.

Delta to have 7,000 more pilots than needed in the fall: memo

Source: Reuters

BUSINESS NEWS MAY 14, 2020 / 10:09 AM / UPDATED 41 MINUTES AGO

(Reuters) - Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), with more than 14,000 pilots on its roster, expects to have 7,000 more than it needs in the fall as the coronavirus pandemic weighs on its operations, according to a memo to flight operations employees seen by Reuters.

The memo follows Delta’s announcement earlier on Thursday that it would no longer fly Boeing Co’s (BA.N) wide-body 777 aircraft and some of the other older, high-maintenance jets, as the U.S. carrier looks to cut costs amid a steep fall in bookings.

“I recognize that is an alarming number so it’s important to know that our intent is to align staffing for what we need over the long term,” John Laughter, S.V.P. of flight operations, said in the May 14 memo, first reported by Reuters.

Laughter said that by the third quarter of 2021, the airline would have between 2,500 and 3,500 pilots more than needed to fly its schedule, even accounting for pilots who will reach mandatory retirement age between now and next summer.

Why 'the next big shoe to drop' in the U.S. economy could hit by July

Published: May 14, 2020 at 9:16 a.m. ET
By Shawn Langlois

The last time a housing bubble popped in the United States, it took four years to play out. But things are moving fast during this pandemic — just look at the record-breaking action in the stock market — and if Wolf Richter has it right, pent-up supply could soon ravage home prices.

He used this chart to show how the typically red-hot Bay Area housing market, including Marin, Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties, has been grinding to a halt.

?uuid=6eefda52-955c-11ea-973e-9c8e992d421e

“This is supposed to be the spring selling season, and new listings are supposed to surge,” Richter explained in a post. “But sellers aren’t interested in having potentially infected people traipsing through their home; and they know that buyers are woefully absent, and it doesn’t make that much sense to list the home because previously listed homes are still languishing on the market.”

Here’s a chart of what the trend typically looks like vs. the current reality:

Republicans celebrate Police Week by refusing critical aid for police chiefs

By Dan Desai Martin -May 14, 2020 9:15 AM

Police chiefs are begging for aid to local governments during this crisis, which Republicans refuse to support.

Republicans in Congress are taking to social media to celebrate law enforcement officers this week in honor of Police Week, but very recently they have vowed to vote against federal aid to local governments requested by the nation's police chiefs.

"I wouldn't be here without the heroic action of police officers," Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) wrote Wednesday on Facebook. "This week we honor the courage and sacrifice of America's law enforcement officers. #PoliceWeek2020."

Just one day earlier, Scalise scoffed at the HEROES Act, which contains $375 billion to help local governments during the coronavirus crisis. The bill is "full of liberal wish list items," Scalise wrote, calling it "a joke."

The act is a new $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill introduced by House Democrats that includes funding for state and local governments, which police chiefs have said is necessary to prevent police departments from cutting positions. The bill would also provide assistance to hospitals facing economic hardship, funding to stabilize the U.S. Post Office, and additional relief checks to Americans.

GOP candidate wants kids back in school just like in the 'pre vaccine era'

By Dan Desai Martin -May 13, 2020 5:33 PM

Former Rep. Claudia Tenney is demanding that schools reopen in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

A Republican congressional candidate has suggested that children go back to school during the coronavirus pandemic based on the fact that children attended school before vaccines were invented.

"Children have a greater ability to develop immunities to this virus based on the evidence we have so far," Claudia Tenney, a former member of Congress who is running for the seat she held in New York's 22nd Congressional District, tweeted on Tuesday. "A cautious approach to returning to school is essential. Children attended school in the pre vaccine era for over a century."

Tenney's suggestion ignores data on mortality rates prior to the invention of vaccines and on the effectiveness of vaccines, as well as warnings from the nation's top infectious disease expert.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes, with regard to the incidence of various infectious diseases before vaccines were available, that hundreds died from measles every year; 15,000 Americans died of diphtheria in 1921 alone; and in 1964-1965, 2,000 babies died of rubella during an epidemic that infected 12.5 million people in the United States.

Some in the media should be demanding and asking if this .......... ( fill in the blank) has any medical records that show she did not get vaccines when she had to go into public school or private one for that matter.............to be able to protect the other children that she was running around with.................

Trump cheers early opening in Wisconsin despite most people opposing it

By Josh Israel -May 14, 2020 10:15 AM

Trump cheered a court ruling overturning the governor's stay-at-home order entirely, even as experts say such orders are necessary to protect Americans from the virus.

Donald Trump cheered the Wisconsin Supreme Court's Wednesday decision to strike down the governor's stay-at-home order, hailing it on Thursday morning as a victory. He also falsely suggested that the state's population wants an immediate end to the social distancing rules designed to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

"The Great State of Wisconsin, home to Tom Tiffany's big Congressional Victory on Tuesday, was just given another win," Trump wrote. "Its Democrat [sic] Governor was forced by the courts to let the State Open. The people want to get on with their lives. The place is bustling!"

Contrary to Trump's claims, a Marquette University Law School poll, released Tuesday, showed that 69% of Wisconsin voters backed closures of schools and businesses and restrictions on public gatherings. A plurality of Republicans in the survey (49% to 43%) believed the rules appropriate (though that was down from 83% support among GOP voters surveyed in late March).

Wisconsin's conservative court overturned Gov. Tony Evers' "Safer at Home" emergency order by a 4-3 majority. They held that "an agency cannot confer on itself the power to dictate the lives of law-abiding individuals as comprehensively as the order does without reaching beyond the executive branch's authority." The challenge had been brought by the Republican leadership in the state legislature.

I really do want that people that are "sane" in Wisconsin to remember that there courts and there right wing fucked up libertarian legislature are basically the new form of death squad, being cheered on by another psychopath sitting in the white house, and that this is the "second" time that that this court and legislature has basically given the citizens of the state a death warrant...............with there libertarian BS..........and this is not going to end well for thousands of people in the Badger State........ ............absolutely amazing

Democrats concede loss of U.S. congressional seat in California special election

POLITICS MAY 12, 2020 / 6:09 AM / UPDATED AN HOUR AGO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats lost a seat in the U.S. Congress as Christy Smith, a California state legislator, conceded on Wednesday in a special election in suburban Los Angeles to Mike Garcia, a former Navy fighter pilot endorsed by President Donald Trump.

“While it’s critical that we ensure every vote is counted and recorded, we believe that the current tally shows Mike Garcia is the likely victor in the May 12th special election. As such, I’d like to congratulate him,” Smith said in a statement.

Garcia jumped to a significant early lead on Tuesday night over Smith in California’s 25th district, the California secretary of state’s office said. It put Garcia’s share of the vote at 56 percent to 44 percent for Smith.

Votes are still being tallied in the election, which was largely a mail-in event because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, Smith’s statement made clear she did not expect to overcome the 12-point deficit.

U.S. senators ask Trump spy chief nominee to clarify testimony on torture

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-intelligence/u-s-senators-ask-trump-spy-chief-nominee-to-clarify-testimony-on-torture-idUSKBN22P344

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two members of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee wrote to President Donald Trump’s nominee for the top U.S. intelligence job on Wednesday seeking clarification of his views on the use of torture by U.S. spy agencies.

In a letter to Representative John Ratcliffe, Trump’s nominee to be Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, and Senator Angus King, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, said they were not satisfied with his answers to questions about torture at an intelligence committee nomination hearing on May 5.

“In both your written and your oral responses to Committee questions about torture, you have been evasive and non-committal,” the letter said.

When asked if he believed so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques” used by the Central Intelligence Agency on suspected al Qaeda militants were consistent with U.S. and international laws prohibiting torture, Ratcliffe responded that he had “not conducted the legal and factual research and analysis that would be required to properly answer this question.”
