The former House Speaker might boomerang to Bakersfield and back to D.C. again.
In an interview with CBS News set to be aired Sunday, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) dropped a suggestion that he'd join forces with former President Donald Trump, should he find a way back to the White House.
The network's chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa asked McCarthy if he would consider serving in a Trump cabinet seat.

Minnesota Republicans haven’t won a statewide race since 2006, and thus far they have failed to recruit a serious 2024 challenger against U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar — likely because candidates don’t want to play the part of the sacrificial lamb.
During a Saturday meeting of the GOP State Central Committee, a group calling itself Rebuild the MNGOP will try to remove state party leaders, including party Chair David Hann.
They aren’t expected to succeed, but it counts as another distraction as the party tries to regroup following a series of electoral defeats culminating in the devastating 2022 election. That’s when Democrats won a surprising trifecta and spent the next six months turning Minnesota into a progressive model for the rest of the nation.

Mike Johnson Admits To Obstructing Justice By Altering J6 Video
The Speaker of the House is blurring faces in order to stop the DOJ from prosecuting them. I'm fairly sure that's called obstruction of justice.

Obstruction of justice is defined by Merriam-Webster as "the crime or act of willfully interfering with the process of justice and law especially by influencing, threatening, harming, or impeding a witness, potential witness, juror, or judicial or legal officer or by furnishing false information in or otherwise impeding an investigation or legal process.
One might imagine that altering real-time video of the January 6 insurrection in order to deter the DOJ from bringing charges against insurrectionists in the building might fit that definition, and is a crime committed against our democracy and the United States constitution. That's not something a Speaker of the House should do, am I right? After all, every one of those Representatives took an oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" and "bear true faith and allegiance to the same."
Those January 6 rioters were there to stop the electoral vote count, also a violation of the Constitution. While many have been identified and prosecuted, many have not.

GOP Governor Ron DeSantis often talks about what he calls "the free state of Florida" but Florida Republican Attorney General Ashley Moody has declared the Sunshine State's public schools, including its libraries, do not exist to promote the free exchange of ideas, but rather, to "convey the government's message."
In a legal brief , the State of Florida argues it has a First Amendment right to remove LGBTQ books, or any book, from public schools and libraries, USA Today's Tallahassee Democrat reports.
"It’s a contention that First Amendment experts and advocates call extreme and chilling. But the state maintains the books on school shelves represent protected government speech. Public school libraries are 'a forum for government speech,' it says, not a 'forum for free expression.'"

'It worked!' GOP Senate candidate floats return to barter system to pay for health care

A top Republican candidate for the United States Senate in Montana floated eliminating all health insurance and bringing back the old-timey payment system where cash-strapped patients could barter with their doctors for medical care .
Semafor reports that Republican Senate candidate Tim Sheehy argued in a meet-and-greet with voters in August that "we need to return healthcare to pure privatization," despite the fact that the United States government has been providing financial assistance to help Americans get medical care for decades.
When asked about what this would entail, Sheehy pointed to the kinds of payment systems that were more common in the 19th century.

The primary goal of Marine Toys for Tots is, through the gift of a new toy, to help bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to America’s less fortunate children.
It's such a small thing, but it brings so much joy to give a toy to a kid who wouldn't get one. There's just something about the cause and effect of putting a toy in a donation box (or donating money on the Toys for Tots website) and knowing it puts a toy under someone's tree.

Major news outlets devoted dramatically less coverage to former President Donald Trump describing his political enemies as “vermin” earlier this month than they provided then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s 2016 “basket of deplorables” remark in the week following those respective comments.
According to a Media Matters review:
* The Big Three broadcast TV networks provided 18 times more coverage of Clinton’s 2016 “deplorables” comment than Trump’s “vermin” remark on their combined nationally syndicated morning news, evening news, and Sunday morning political talk shows.
* CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC mentioned Clinton’s “deplorables” comment nearly 9 times more than Trump’s “vermin” comment.
* Print reports that mentioned Trump’s statement outnumbered those that mentioned Clinton’s 29-to-1 across the five highest-circulating U.S. newspapers.

Former Olympic gold medalist to be sentenced for storming Capitol on Jan. 6

Klete Keller, who once competed in the Olympics as a swimmer and won a gold medal, is due to be sentenced Friday for participating in the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, NBC News reported.
Keller pleaded guilty in September 2021 to a felony charge of obstruction of an official proceeding. Prosecutors are asking for a sentence of 10 months in federal prison — lower than guidelines recommend since he cooperated with investigators after his arrest.
"Klete Derik Keller once wore the American flag as an Olympian," prosecutors wrote in a sentencing memo. "On January 6, 2021, he threw that flag in a trash can."

Gavin Newsom is the absolutely best surrogate for the Biden/Harris campaign. He is right up there with Pete Buttigieg in terms of handling the craziness from the right wing echo chamber. And Newsom's skills were on shining display on Thursday when he debated Ron DeSantis (with a solid assist from Hannity). Even in a 2 to 1 situation, Newsom dominated for the full 90 minutes.
One of the absolute best moments was when he launched into a full throated defense of the Biden/Harris record and ended with a zinger that will definitely be in ads for both sides for the next few months...until DeSantis drops out.
NEWSOM: I'm here to tell the truth about the Biden/Harris record and compare and contrast it with Ron DeSantis' record...points of contrast that are as different as daylight and darkness. You want to bring us back to pre-1960s world. America, in reverse. You want to roll back hard earned national rights on voting rights, on civil rights, LGBTQ rights, on women's rights, not just access to abortion, but also access to contraception. You want to weaponize grievance. You are focusing on false separateness. You in particular, Ron, want to create a cultural purge intimidating and humiliating people you disagree with. You and President Trump are really trying to light democracy on fire. So Sean, there are profound differences tonight. And I look forward in engaging. But there's one thing in closing that we have in common, that is neither of us will be the nominee for our party in 2024.

Bad Day For Trump, Ex-POTUS Can Be Sued For Capitol Attack

A three-judge panel on Friday delivered some bad news for Donald Trump, saying that he isn't immune from lawsuits over the Jan. 6 Capitol attack just because he was President at the time. This ruling comes as the twice-impeached former President faces three lawsuits from House lawmakers and Capitol police officers who are accusing him of inciting the attack. Oops!
USA Today reports:
"President Trump moved in the district court to dismiss the claims against him, including on grounds of a President's official-act immunity from damages liability," Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan wrote. "We answer no, at least at this stage of the proceedings."
Srinivasan and Judges George Katsas and Judith Rogers heard the case. Srinivasan was appointed to the appeals court by Barack Obama, Katsas by Trump and Rogers by Bill Clinton.
