The Speaker of the House is blurring faces in order to stop the DOJ from prosecuting them. I'm fairly sure that's called obstruction of justice.
By Karoli Kuns December 5, 2023
Obstruction of justice is defined by Merriam-Webster as "the crime or act of willfully interfering with the process of justice and law especially by influencing, threatening, harming, or impeding a witness, potential witness, juror, or judicial or legal officer or by furnishing false information in or otherwise impeding an investigation or legal process.
One might imagine that altering real-time video of the January 6 insurrection in order to deter the DOJ from bringing charges against insurrectionists in the building might fit that definition, and is a crime committed against our democracy and the United States constitution. That's not something a Speaker of the House should do, am I right? After all, every one of those Representatives took an oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" and "bear true faith and allegiance to the same."
Those January 6 rioters were there to stop the electoral vote count, also a violation of the Constitution. While many have been identified and prosecuted, many have not.

(115,847 posts)with any evidence DOJ didn't already have. What he's trying to do is make it more difficult for DOJ to track down the still-unindicted insurrectionists with the help of the public, which is how they've identified and caught a lot of them. The better description of what he's done is obstruction of justice.

(115,847 posts)all the raw footage because it would reveal sensitive info, especially the locations of security devices, cameras, etc.

(18,641 posts)Every time they do something to hurt democrats, it boomerangs back and hits them square in the nuts.
This time, Johnson released that video to make Biden and the Dept Of Justice look petty, but what happened was people were calling the FBI to report their exes, former business partners, and people who owe them money.
Mike Johnson ended up helping the FBI identify Trumper criminals.

(18,641 posts)He released the videos on their website last week. this week he's blurring the faces.
The FBI has had the raw videos since day one, but were still working to ID people. When Johnson released the video to the general population, he opened a new floodgate of indictments. ooops!

(32,081 posts)I have seen no floodgate of new indictments. Where do you see it?

Mike Johnson to release 40,000 hours of Jan. 6 footage
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Friday announced the public release of more than 40,000 hours of Capitol security footage from Jan. 6, 2021.
Why it matters: The move meets a key demand of the Republicans' right flank as conservatives simmer at Johnson for passing a stopgap spending bill along bipartisan lines.
What they're saying: "Today, we will begin immediately posting video on a public website and move as quickly as possible to add to the website nearly all of the footage, more than 40,000 hours," Johnson said.

They began releasing the videos November 17th. This week he said they will go back and blur the faces.

(94,728 posts)DOJ would have requested the unedited video way back in 2021. The release now is just for public consumption.

What are Democrats going to do about a guy who uses tapes to defend Trump and his fellow aiders/abetters in the court of public opinion? Nothing. Still, I'd like to see what Rep. Dan Goldman says about this.
Maybe Johnson's off the hook for being charged as an 'accessory after the fact' by using the "speech and debate" lol clause for congresspeople. But being an accessory after the fact is pretty much what he's doing.
