A fake Starbucks ad is trying to lure DREAMers to round them up for deportation

Source: Think Progress

Contrary to a fake ad promoted by social media users, the coffee-shop giant Starbucks will not be offering discounts to undocumented immigrants on August 11, the company has confirmed.

Created by internet trolls, the fraudulent ad titled “Starbucks Dreamer Day” reads, “All undocumented Americans will receive any item on the Starbucks menu 40 percent off” with the hashtag #BorderFreeCoffee. The word “Dreamer” is often associated with a group of undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children, as it’s named after a 16-year-old bipartisan immigration bill that seeks to legalize this group of people.

John Kelly, the Starbucks senior vice president of global communications, told The Associated Press over the weekend that the rumor is “completely false. One hundred percent fake.” The company has also taken to Twitter to respond to internet users who have promulgated the fake ad.

Internet trolls seized on the opportunity to market Starbucks to immigrants because the company is known for its progressive hiring practices, like setting goals to hire thousands of refugees and veterans.

Maybe it time to inundate 4chan website, that is doing this sh*t, just like telemarketers, don't call back or answer the phone just send a program to override their system like one programmer did on one scam operation just awhile back.

If anyone is interested in this and wants to comment on

this article, which I believe that it should be posted for our awareness on Fake News.

I just wish that my tv, phone and my computer can or could warn me that it is fake or real with a watermark just like that are on payroll checks, I hope no one is offended

In an age of Photoshop, filters and social media, many of us are used to seeing manipulated pictures – subjects become slimmer and smoother or, in the case of Snapchat, transformed into puppies.

However, there’s a new breed of video and audio manipulation tools, made possible by advances in artificial intelligence and computer graphics, that will allow for the creation of realistic looking footage of public figures appearing to say, well, anything. Trump declaring his proclivity for water sports. Hillary Clinton describing the stolen children she keeps locked in her wine cellar. Tom Cruise finally admitting what we suspected all along … that he’s a Brony.

This is the future of fake news. We’ve long been told not to believe everything we read, but soon we’ll have to question everything we see and hear as well.

For now, there are several research teams working on capturing and synthesizing different visual and and audio elements of human behavior.

My sister says I am an alien: A 9-year-old applies to be NASAs planetary protection officer

Source: Washington Post

When NASA announced last week that it was looking for a new planetary protection officer, the space agency received some incredulous responses.

Some were agog at the six-figure salary: between $124,000 and $187,000 per year. Others laughed at the fantastical job title, one that conjured up science-fiction fantasies and battles with aliens. (In reality, NASA says, the position is focused on preventing astronauts from bringing biological contaminants from space back to Earth — and vice versa.)

But one 9-year-old boy in New Jersey took the vacancy seriously. So he took a sheet of paper and an obviously well-sharpened pencil and carefully hand-wrote his application.

Justin Gatlins 100m medal ceremony moved to avoid booing

Source: The Guardian

Sunday night’s world championships 100m medal ceremony has been switched because athletics chiefs do not want to see a full stadium booing Justin Gatlin and the American national anthem.

The ceremony was originally due to be held at 8pm but has now been moved to 6.50pm before the evening programme starts. The International Association of Athletics Federations has officially insisted that the switch has “nothing to do with the result”, however their denials were met with scepticism by most observers inside the London Stadium.

Meanwhile Sebastian Coe, the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, says he will congratulate the new world 100m champion Justin Gatlin if he sees him in London this week – but admits he was far from “eulogistic” to see the twice-banned American sprinter win gold. In what was Usain Bolt’s final individual race before retirement, the 11-times world champion could only take third place, behind the US sprinters Gatlin and Christian Coleman.

“Sport rarely settles upon the perfect script. Life’s just not like that,” Lord Coe said. Speaking on BBC 5 Live’s Sportsweek, Coe added: “It’s not the worst result ever. I’m hardly going to sit here and tell you I’m eulogistic that somebody that has served two bans in our sport would walk off with one of our glittering prizes, but he is eligible to be here.”

GOP Sen. Cotton Says He Doesnt See Bills To Shield Mueller Going Very Far

Source: Talking Points Memo

By ESME CRIBB Published AUGUST 6, 2017 11:37 AM

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) on Sunday said he does not expect legislation to shield special counsels from political influence to progress much.

“First there was the vote on sanctions, which the President did not like with respect to Russia. Also in the Senate you took measures to make sure there were no recess appointments. And finally there are a couple of bipartisan efforts to make sure that the President can’t fire the special counsel,” CBS News’ John Dickerson asked on “Face the Nation.” “Seems to be Congress is trying to constrain the President.”

“Well, those are all very different kinds of actions,” Cotton replied.

He said he supported the sanctions legislation and said Senate scheduling to prevent recess appointments “is something that goes back to the Obama administration.”

“That’s simply Congress taking its responsibility seriously to provide advice and consent to all nominations,” he said.

Alan Dershowitz says ethnic and racial composition of a D.C. grand jury hurts Trump

Famed defense attorney and Harvard University Law School professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz told a talk radio host on Friday that the large African American population in the District of Columbia could prove problematic to the Trump administration as special counsel Robert Mueller moves forward with his investigation of potential coordination between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia.

In an interview with WABC Radio host Rita Cosby, Dershowitz said Washington has always been solidly Democratic and “has an ethnic and racial composition that might be very unfavorable to the Trump administration.” Mueller has reportedly impaneled grand juries in Washington and Northern Virginia as part of his ongoing investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.

https://thinkprogress.org/alan-dershowitz-diverse-jury-hurts-trump/

Hey Dershowitz, please tell everyone exactly what happened in 2001, when the U.S supreme court stepped in to stop a count.

And from this article you think that because if a possible crime has been committed in the DC district, and in a federal court, that somehow that this grand jury system should be court shopped to get the results that you and some outlets are now seeking to a friendly court and district, or you serious, and that somehow race is the driving force, did you forget that there are 23 individuals on that panel.
So when the Pravda propaganda cable station (Fox) spews this format are you speaking the same thing?
After all the Pravda cable station (Fox) with the former woman judge and there other attorney spewing this stuff, and said basically the same thing, and from the impression I am reading in this article that this a attempt to try and to bastardized the judicial system

Want to Really Help Workers? Protect their Speech!

When does free speech stop being free? At the entranceway of one's job, apparently.

That was the implication of a ruling this month from the Eighth Circuit Court, which found that the sandwich conglomerate Jimmy John’s was within its rights to fire six employees for making signs that protested the company’s policy of forcing workers to come to work when ill.

While the decision came as a surprise to many, the logic underlying it—that employees have few, if any, free speech protections on the job—has had devastating impacts on American workers for decades. Indeed, the dramatic drop in union representation is due in part to the fact that our court system regulates employees’ ability to organize by the impact of their organizing on businesses’ bottom line, devoid of any concern for the free speech or civil rights of workers.

Until we ensure that freedom of speech extends to the workplace, workers and the labor movement writ large will continue to suffer defeats at the hands of courts, corporations and legislatures. In short, we need a 21st-century Bill of Rights for Labor.

A World First Fusion Reactor Just Created Its First Plasma

From May 1, 2017 Article

After being turned on for the first time, the UK’s newest fusion reactor has achieved first plasma. This simply means that the reactor was able to successfully generate a molten mass of electrically-charged gas — plasma — inside its core.

Called the ST40, the reactor was constructed by Tokamak Energy, one of the leading private fusion energy companies in the world. The company was founded in 2009 with the express purpose of designing and developing small fusion reactors to introduce fusion power into the grid by 2030.

Now that the ST40 is running, the company will commission and install the complete set of magnetic coils needed to reach fusion temperatures. The ST40 should be creating a plasma temperature as hot as the center of the Sun — 15 million degrees Celsius (27 million degrees Fahrenheit) — by Autumn 2017.

By 2018, the ST40 will produce plasma temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius (180 million degrees Fahrenheit), another record-breaker for a privately owned and funded fusion reactor. That temperature threshold is important, as it is the minimum temperature for inducing the controlled fusion reaction. Assuming the ST40 succeeds, it will prove that its novel design can produce commercially viable fusion power.

Potsylvania? US marijuana company aims to transform California desert town

Now that one of the nation’s largest cannabis companies has bought the entire California desert town of Nipton, a question remains: will the new owners rename the place Potsylvania?

The name Weed already belongs to an old mill town in northern California.

American Green announced Thursday it is buying all 80 acres of Nipton, which includes its old west-style hotel, a handful of houses, an RV park and a coffee shop. Its plans are to transform the old gold rush town into what it calls “an energy-independent, cannabis-friendly hospitality destination.”

The town’s current owner, Roxanne Lang, said the sale is still in escrow, but confirmed American Green is the buyer. She declined to reveal price before the sale closes, but noted she and her late husband, Gerald Freeman, listed the property at $5m when they put it up for sale last year.

This anti-abortion hijacking of Black Lives Matter is cynical and offensive

It’s a fairly large number, 100,000, but nice and round. Easy to compute. Most of us could even divide it by 10, at a push. Apparently it is this convenient roundedness that led the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) this week to dismiss complaints about recent claims on a billboard that Northern Ireland’s abortion laws have saved “100,000” lives. In its statement, the ASA said: “We considered that 100,000 was a large, round number that readers would typically associate with estimates” – and was therefore unproblematic.

Funded by a campaign called Both Lives Matter, the billboard prompted 14 complaints, but the ASA decided that its assertion was not misleading – despite the campaign admitting that it is not possible to calculate an exact figure, although its estimate is both “credible” and “conservative”.

It is not just the advertisement that is misleading and offensive, but also the very name of the campaign behind the billboard.

Describing itself as “pro-women and pro-life”, Both Lives Matter is a recent addition to the Northern Ireland anti-choice landscape, where abortion is permitted only if a woman’s life is at risk or there is a very serious risk to her mental or physical health. Fatal foetal abnormalities and pregnancies resulting from sexual crime such as rape or incest are not included.

And yet, somehow, in all its talk of “both” lives mattering during a crisis pregnancy, the campaign fails ever to mention the pregnant woman. What is happening to that person’s life – their body, their dreams, their finances, their mental health – is, for a campaign seemingly more intent on oppressing women than liberating them, nothing more than a word association game meant to draw a provocative parallel with a real struggle for civil rights.

Playing on Black Lives Matter is not just cynical, it’s offensive. A campaign started by three black women – Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi – to highlight the gross injustice and racial dimensions of police brutality in the US, it owes much of its strength not only to the mothers of the men and women killed by police, but to women of colour writ large, who bear the brunt of America’s institutionalised racism and sexism. The concept of reproductive rights and reproductive justice, which goes far beyond the simple right to choose whether or not to continue with a pregnancy, is integral to Black Lives Matter, because it also means the right to parent your child in a safe environment without fear – something consistently denied to black families by police and institutional injustice.

Defined by the Sister Song Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective as “the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities,” reproductive justice as a concept was developed by women of colour who saw many of their communities challenged not just by an absence of accessible abortion, but by poverty, racism and discrimination.
It is often poor women of colour whose access to reproductive healthcare is most affected by anti-abortion laws in states such as Texas, where the recent HB2 law increased the distance to the nearest abortion clinic by more than 100 miles in some places. This can be an insurmountable burden for women with low incomes, often women of colour, and is a pattern being repeated across America.

Concepts such as reproductive justice and campaigns such as Black Lives Matter are a response to oppression and domination. There are parallels to be drawn with abortion access in Northern Ireland, but it is not the one that anti-abortion protesters attempt to make. Rather, it is an understanding of how human rights might be used to liberate communities, rather than excuse and justify their oppression.

The hijacking of such a powerful concept by the Both Lives Matter campaign is a cynical attempt to spin the language of human rights into froth to hide their true agenda – the subjugation of women. An appropriation of intersecting oppressions, Both Lives Matter neither cares about women’s lives, nor shares an affinity with Black Lives Matter – beyond using a powerful rallying cry for human rights as a cover to maintain the marginalisation of women in Northern Ireland.

It is perhaps beyond the remit of the ASA to name this for what it is. But it is not beyond ours.
