Genetics in focus after coronavirus deaths of siblings and twins

Amid the steady stream of stories on the lives lost to coronavirus are cases that stand out as remarkable. In the past month, at least two pairs of twins have died in Britain and two pairs of brothers, all within hours or days of each other. But do the deaths point to genetic factors that make some more likely than others to succumb to the disease?

Most scientists believe that genes play a role in how people respond to infections. A person’s genetic makeup may influence the receptors that the coronavirus uses to invade human cells. How resilient the person is to the infection, their general health, and how the immune system reacts will also have some genetic component.

A team led by Prof Tim Spector, head of twin research and genetic epidemiology at King’s College London, has reported that Covid-19 symptoms appear to be 50% genetic. But Spector said more work is needed to understand which genes are involved and what difference they make to the course of the disease. “We don’t know if there are genes linked to the receptors or genes linked to how the infection presents,” he said.

Identical twins Katy and Emma Davis, aged 37, died at Southampton general hospital last month. The sisters, who lived together, had underlying health problems and had been ill for some time before they contracted the virus. Another pair of twins, Eleanor Andrews and her sister Eileen, aged 66, died earlier this month. They too lived together and had underlying health conditions.

Greta Thunberg and children's group hit back at attempt to throw out climate case

Source: The Guardian

Greta Thunberg and a group of other children have pushed forward their legal complaint at the UN against countries they accuse of endangering children’s wellbeing through the climate crisis, despite attempts to have it thrown out.

The 16 children, including the Swedish environmental activist, lodged a legal case with the UN committee on the rights of the child against Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany and Turkey last September.

They alleged that the countries – which are legally obliged to protect children under the UN convention on the rights of the child – breached those obligations by failing to protect them from the “direct, imminent and foreseeable risk to their health and wellbeing” posed by the climate crisis.

Three countries – Brazil, France and Germany – have replied to the petition, saying it should not be admissible by the committee.

The lawsuit joins a growing number of attempts to bring climate cases to court, alleging that government or businesses have flouted the law or failed in their international obligations. One of the most successful has been in the Netherlands, in the Urgenda case, in which judges found the government must change its policies to tackle emissions and the climate crisis.

In the UK, campaigners brought a successful legal challenge that found the government was wrong to allow the expansion of Heathrow airport without taking into account its obligations under the Paris agreement. The ruling will have implications for other government plans likely to raise emissions, such as road-building schemes.

More than 1,300 legal actions have been brought around the world to try to force governments to confront the climate crisis. More than 1,000 are in the US; the highest profile case there, the Juliana case, was dismissed by judges earlier this year. There are similar cases ongoing in 28 countries including Ireland, Australia, Spain and New Zealand.

Trump's intel pick claims he doesn't know what Trump's 'deep state' theory is

By Emily Singer and Oliver Willis -May 5, 2020 11:57 AM

Trump has claimed for years that there is a group of anti-Trump officials within the government trying to take him down.

For years, Donald Trump has claimed there is a "deep state" of anti-Trump intelligence officials from former President Barack Obama's administration trying to take him down from within the government — a false conspiracy theory promulgated by fringe far-right activists.

But despite Trump's frequent comments on the "deep state," Trump's nominee to head the intelligence community said Tuesday he's never heard of the term and doesn't know what it is.

The admission from Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX), Trump's pick for director of national intelligence, came during a line of questioning at his confirmation hearing from Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM).

"President Trump has repeatedly and without any basis, in my view, accused the hard-working men and women of the [intelligence community] of working to undermine his administration. Do you think, do you believe that there is a 'deep state' in the ic?" Henrich asked Ratcliffe.

Well if you spoke by phone to Collins, did you get a wink and nod of no concern..........and lets be clear you will have the ability asshole to put lackeys in charge and get the answers you want, and then try to feed that BS during future congressional hearings and you probably will in all probability fire a lot of dedicated career people to further your boss and people like Collins agenda of BS...............of being concerned...............and he will learn his lesson...............

Trump economic team's model claims death rate will be near zero soon

By Emily Singer -May 5, 2020 1:15 PM

No other models say the number of coronavirus deaths will fall near zero.

A Trump administration economic adviser with no experience in epidemiology created a coronavirus model that predicted deaths from the virus dropping to near zero by May 15, the Washington Post reported on Monday. The model offers an extremely optimistic prediction that no others have shown.

The adviser who created the model, Kevin Hassett, has denied it plays a role in decisions related to the virus. "I have never, ever said that that's my projection of what the death count was going to be, and no administration policy has been influenced by my projections," he told the Post.

However, according to a Post report, Trump and his aides used that model to justify plans to start reopening the economy. White House officials, like Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, were reported to have relied on it because it "affirmed their own skepticism about the severity of the virus and bolstered their case to shift the focus to the economy, which they firmly believed would determine whether Trump wins a second term," according to the Post.

With coronavirus deaths now at a staggering 68,237, and with hundreds more dying from COVID-19 each day, there is no way that deaths will drop to zero in just 10 days.

This cannot be posted enough...............this asshole is making a model, that has the other asshole running around and demanding that states open up for greed to justify his actions ............and this "model" is going to get a lot of people killed based on them both having no empathy to the country..............based on bias model ......and this one asshole just trying to please the other asshole...........

Trump administration calls his Fox News interview 'a core government function'

By Dan Desai Martin -May 5, 2020 12:44 PM

Donald Trump used the Fox News interview to complain about the media and attack Democratic governors.

Interior Secretary David Bernhardt claimed Donald Trump's Fox News interview at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday was a critical government function during the coronavirus crisis — and lifted the ban on such events to allow it to happen.

"Given the extraordinary crisis that the American people have endured, and the need for the President to exercise a core governmental function to address the Nation about an ongoing public-health crisis, I am exercising my authority to facilitate the opportunity for the President to conduct this address within the Lincoln Memorial," Bernhardt wrote in a Friday order to the National Park Service.

Trump's interview "will illuminate and reflect the values of our Nation during an unprecedented public-health crisis," Bernhardt added.

Trump used much of his interview seated beside the statue of Abraham Lincoln to recount his standard grievances about the media and Democratic politicians.

Trump says 'everybody's excited' about stock market as death toll rises

By Dan Desai Martin -May 5, 2020 12:12 PM

As of Tuesday morning, at least 68,843 people in the United States had died of the coronavirus.

Even as the death toll from the new coronavirus continues to rise, Donald Trump is focused on the stock market.

A Trump administration internal document predicts that the daily death toll from the virus will reach 3,000 by June 1, which would be a 70% increase from the current number of deaths per day, the New York Times reported on Monday.

Yet before boarding Air Force One to visit Arizona on Tuesday, Trump took time to brag about stocks.

Staff forced to risk health so Trump can travel

By Associated Press -May 5, 2020 11:20 AM

Experts worry that Trump is putting his staff, military personnel, and local and state officials at unnecessary risk.

For much of the last two months, Donald Trump has rarely left the grounds of the White House as he's dealt with the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic and sought to minimize his own exposure to the disease.

But that changes Tuesday when Trump is scheduled to travel to Arizona to visit a Honeywell facility that makes N95 masks in what the president suggests will mark the return to more regular travel.

The trip also means a small army of advisers, logistical experts, and security staff — a coterie of hundreds that includes personnel from the White House, Defense Department, Secret Service, and more — will resume regularly hitting the road again and taking a measure of risk to assist Trump.

Besides Tuesday's trip to Honeywell, Trump says he will travel soon to Ohio, to New York in June for the U.S. Military Academy graduation, and to South Dakota in July for a holiday fireworks display at Mount Rushmore. Trump says he's also eager to get back on the campaign trail, though he acknowledged during a Fox News forum Sunday that he might not be able to hold his signature big-stadium rallies until the final months before the Nov. 3 election.

You are not fucking welcome in Ȟe Sápa................go the fuck away.........you are epitome of the Manifest Destiny fucking doctrine..........you'll want too have your head craved up there between Roosevelt and Lincoln, but your ego is way to fucking big......and it wouldn't get done in time........so is there going to be hundreds in the stands with rockets red glare and all the other trappings, with him standing there all by himself and the photo shoot opportunity...................
