Democratic group defies Trump, ramps up ad blasting coronavirus response

BIG STORY 12 MARCH 26, 2020 / 2:58 PM / UPDATED 15 MINUTES AGO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic super PAC Priorities USA said on Thursday it planned to expand its use of an advertisement critical of President Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic despite the Trump re-election campaign’s efforts to stop it.

Trump’s campaign on Wednesday said it had sent cease-and-desist letters to local television stations that were running the ad in Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin - all expected to be swing states critical in November’s presidential election - because of what it considers a false assertion that Trump referred to the virus as a hoax.

It threatened litigation if stations refused to pull the ad.

The ad plays verbatim quotes from the president, including “We have it totally under control,” and “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear” as a graph shows the rising number of U.S. infection cases. In the opening, the ad includes his quote that “this is their new hoax.”

Explainer: Hobbled IRS tax agency may need months to get cash to Americans

BUSINESS NEWSMARCH 26, 2020 / 11:11 AM / UPDATED 3 HOURS AGO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In order to put recession-fighting checks into the hands of millions of Americans, the U.S. government will rely on a tax agency that has fewer workers, a smaller budget and the same 1960s-era computer systems it had the last time it was asked to do so.

Hollowed out by budget cuts and hobbled by obsolete technology, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service has struggled over the past decade. Audits have dropped and taxpayer service has suffered, agency figures show.

Now Congress and the Trump administration are piling on more work as they scramble to contain the fallout from the coronavirus, which threatens to plunge the world’s largest economy into recession.

The U.S. Senate approved a massive stimulus bill on Wednesday that would provide payments of up to $1,200 to millions of Americans. It also includes a range of tax breaks for businesses and individuals. The House of Representatives is expected to pass it on Friday.

Republican officials are openly ignoring coronavirus guidelines

By Associated Press -March 26, 2020 9:23 AM

Americans have been told not to travel abroad, go to gyms, or shake hands. But those are all things some Republican officials are doing.

The State Department has advised against all international travel because of the coronavirus, but that didn't stop Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from flying to Afghanistan this week.

Gyms across the nation's capital are shuttered, but Sen. Rand Paul, an eye doctor, still managed a workout at the Senate on Sunday morning as he awaited the results of a coronavirus test. It came back positive.

The guidance against shaking hands? That hasn't always applied to Donald Trump, whose penchant for pressing the flesh continued even after public health officials in his administration were warning that such bodily contact could facilitate the spread of the contagious virus. Practice social distancing? Daily White House briefings involve Trump and other senior officials crowded around a podium.

Even as the country has largely hunkered down, heeding the guidance of health experts and the directives of state leaders, some powerful people in Washington have defied preventative measures aimed at curbing the spread. Their business-as-usual actions are at odds with the restrictions everyday Americans find themselves under, and with the government's own messaging.

House Democrats urged to remove 'insidious attack' on Social Security hidden

within senate coronavirus bill

Published 3 mins ago on March 26, 2020
By Jake Johnson, Common Dreams

“The only way to escape this trap is to avoid stepping into it in the first place. That’s why the House must remove the cut to Social Security’s dedicated funding before this bill passes.”

Progressives are demanding that the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives prioritize removing a little-noticed provision in the massive Senate-passed coronavirus stimulus bill that would allow employers to stop paying into Social Security for at least the rest of the year—potentially threatening the program’s long-term financial health.

“If Trump and Republicans retain power after November’s elections, they will make sure that corporations never repay Social Security.”
—Michael Phelan, Social Security Works

Section 2302 of the nearly 900-page legislation would let companies defer until next year their payment of the employer payroll tax, one of the primary funding mechanisms for Social Security. The bill would require that companies pay 50% of their owed 2020 payroll taxes by December 31, 2021.

While the section has thus far received little media attention, advocacy group Social Security Works said the language authorizes an “insidious attack” on the New Deal-era program and must be stripped out before final passage.

The House is expected to vote on the bill as early as Friday.

Steve Mnuchin: Record-shattering jobless claims 'are not relevant in the short term'

Published 1 min ago on March 26, 2020
By Brad Reed

Trump Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Thursday appeared to downplay the seriousness of the record-shattering number of jobless claims filed over the last week.

During an interview on CNBC, Mnuchin was asked to comment on the latest jobless claims report showing that 3.3 million Americans had filed for unemployment in just the last week, and he responded that we need to look at the bigger picture of where the economy will be a month from now.

“To be honest, I think these numbers right now aren’t relevant, whether they’re bigger or smaller, in the short term,” he said.

Mnuchin then predicted that much of the economic damage being done right now would be mitigated by the $2 trillion stimulus bill passed by the Senate.

Robert Reich: We've reached a moral emergency -- and the privileged are profiting from it

Published 1 min ago on March 26, 2020
By Robert Reich- Commentary

Societies gripped by cataclysmic wars, depressions, or pandemics can become acutely sensitive to power and privilege.

Weeks before the coronavirus crushed the U.S. stock market, Republican Senator Richard Burr used information gleaned as chairman of the Senate intelligence committee about the ferocity of the coming pandemic to unload 33 stocks held by him and his spouse, estimated at between $628,033 and $1.72 million, in some of the industries likely to be hardest hit by the global outbreak.

While publicly parroting Trump’s happy talk at the time, Burr confided to several of his political funders that the disease would be comparable to the deadly 1918 flu pandemic.

Then the market tanked, along with the retirement savings of millions of Americans.

Federal workers angered as Trump admin subjects them to a 'confusing jumble' of coronavirus messages

Published 10 mins ago on March 26, 2020
By Sky Palma

As the coronavirus health crisis continues to spiral, the nation’s federal agencies are starting to feel its impact as dozens of its employees have tested positive for the virus, all while hundreds if not thousands of government employees have been forced to self-quarantine. According to POLITICO’s Nolan D. McCaskill, a plan from the Trump administration to address the problem is nowhere in sight, and the result is a confusing jumble of messages that has angered federal workers and those who represent them.

“We’ve been getting a lot of mixed information. The president has put out different information, then OMB puts out guidance, and then the DOT secretary puts out guidance and then the FAA administrator puts out guidance,” national president of Professional Aviation Safety Specialists, Mike Perrone, told McCaskill. “Nobody said nothing for how many hours? And they knew about it?” Perrone added. “I’m frustrated — very frustrated — because literally people are gonna get sick and people could potentially die or spread it to their families.”

McCaskill writes that there’s currently no clear directions for federal agencies on reporting infections within their ranks, causing some to undershare their cases to others releasing daily reports on their numbers.

Here's how the coronavirus relief stimulus 'checks' to citizens will actually work

Published 4 hours ago on March 26, 2020
By Matthew Rozsa, Salon

The $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package, which the Senate passed on Wednesday, will be the largest economic relief measure in American history — and will purportedly provide tangible benefits to virtually every American citizen.

But how so? The idea of the government doling out “free” money to its citizens is anathema to many Americans, who have been trained to believe that they are undeserving of even the most basic social safety nets that are considered normal in most developed countries. Hence, Americans are apt to be curious and/or skeptical about the notion of government checks.

First, here’s how the funds will be allocated. The bill will provide cash payments of $1,200 to taxpayers whose incomes are equal to or less than $75,000 each year. After that, it will gradually phase out the payments for taxpayers whose incomes are between $75,000 and $99,000 each year and eliminate them entirely for taxpayers who earn more than $99,000 each year. Families will also receive an additional $500 for every child in their household.

Here’s how this distribution of funds to individual citizens will actually work. Those with a valid social security number who filed taxes in the past two years will likely get money. The government bases its knowledge of your income on your tax return, although different sources report different things. CNBC reporters say that one’s income is based off most recently-filed tax returns; that means that if you already filed your 2019 tax return, they would base income data on that. If you filed last year (for the 2018 fiscal year), but haven’t filed for 2019 yet, the income data would be based on that. Yet finance reporters at The Motley Fool believe that only 2018 incomes as reported on one’s tax returns will be considered.

Most republicans despise this woman, Frances Perkins. Why may you ask, she, Frances Perkins

was most instrumental person in the FDR administration that helped champion the New Deal.

She is beyond being called a giant in my opinion for what she did at the beginning of the last century and through out her life to and for the worker and what she wanted and got for working human beings if and when they got fired, laid off or some other unforeseen event happened like a World War.

It was her and her tenacity that we would have unemployment insurance tonight republican again are balking about you and me and those in the future do not get unemployment insurance during this pandemic .

She also championed the idea that we should have Social Security, so that those like her in her and generation and future generations standing in soup lines, or standing with a cardboard advertisements strapped to one body begging for work, she said enough is enough.

Her history within this country makes her absolutely remarkable and yet today the senate libertarian republicans today and from those days gone by are balking on the unemployment insurance.

And since my wife is one of thousands that is on this program, who help insure that program by the work they accomplish so that they and there employer pay into that fund to protect the worker.................is under attack again by fascist and there libertarian republican leaders, that took almost ten days and now counting to provide relief for families like myself and others that serve this country with honor and only ask for a fair shake in this republic in our time of stress and need.

I honestly believe that the democratic leadership, should be in the front of the cameras right now and ask , why would senator making $187,000 a year or in a leadership position making over $225,000 with health care benefits and a tenured pension being so lacking in empathy..............who dos that remind you of a psychopath in the white house.

Thank you for letting me vent my rage ...................November 3, 2020 cannot and I repeat cannot get here fast enough...................my memory is very long......................
