U.S. is denying passports to Americans along the border, throwing their citizenship into question

HARR, Tex. — On paper, he’s a devoted U.S. citizen.

His official American birth certificate shows he was delivered by a midwife in Brownsville, at the southern tip of Texas. He spent his life wearing American uniforms: three years as a private in the Army, then as a cadet in the Border Patrol and now as a state prison guard.

But when Juan, 40, applied to renew his U.S. passport this year, the government’s response floored him. In a letter, the State Department said it didn’t believe he was an American citizen.

As he would later learn, Juan is one of a growing number of people whose official birth records show they were born in the United States but who are now being denied passports — their citizenship suddenly thrown into question. The Trump administration is accusing hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Hispanics along the border of using fraudulent birth certificates since they were babies, and it is undertaking a widespread crackdown on their citizenship.

In a statement, the State Department said that it “has not changed policy or practice regarding the adjudication of passport applications,” adding that “the U.S.-Mexico border region happens to be an area of the country where there has been a significant incidence of citizenship fraud.”

DeVos prepping new rules on sexual misconduct standards for campuses: report

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is formulating new policies regarding how universities handle sexual assault and harassment cases.

The new rules would increase protections for students accused of sexual misconduct, reduce liability for colleges and universities and encourage schools to broaden their support networks for victims, according to The New York Times.

The rules would reportedly limit accountability for schools to complaints that happened on campus and were filed through proper authorities. They would also raise the bar legally for proving a school mishandled a complaint, according to the Times.


The move comes while multiple universities are facing allegations that staff members failed to properly act when made aware of sexual misconduct.

Ian Milhiser: So I have a story about Ron DeSantis. Spoiler Alert: He is not a sane man

1) So, I have a story about Ron DeSantis, who Republicans just nominated as their gubernatorial candidate in Florida.

Spoiler Alert: He is not a sane man.

2) Last December, I was a guest on Fox News. DeSantis was a guest two segments before mine. Which means that his segment ended about 20 minutes

3) DeSantis' segment featured him touting anti-Mueller conspiracy theories involving Peter Strzok.

4) Anyways, when you go on one of the three major cable news networks, a makeup artist puts a thick cake of powder on your face. When your segment is over, you go back to the greenroom and they have wipes you use to get rid of the makeup before you leave.

So I do my segment, go back to wipe my face, and Rep. Ron DeSantis is standing in the middle of the makeup room still ranting about a conspiracy theory involving Hillary Clinton, the Pee Tape Dossier, the FBI, and how Rep. Jim Jordan (I think) is going to get to the bottom of it.


6) It wasn't the sort of rant you hear from rational thinkers. If DeSantis wasn't wearing a suit and a Member of Congress pin, I would have assumed that a person with a serious mental illness had somehow bypassed security and found his way into the Fox studio.


7) Meanwhile, the poor makeup artists are trying to go about their work in a pretty small room while also having to walk around this unhinged man in the middle of the room ranting at them.

8) At the time, I didn't know who he was -- I hadn't paid attention to his segment. I realized he was a member of Congress because I saw his pin, and I remember thinking "doesn't this guy have anything better to do?" He was still ranting 25 minutes after his segment ending.

9) So, anyway, a GOP nominee for governor is a Member of Congress who thought the best way to spend a weeknight was screaming about a conspiracy theory involving Hillary Clinton and the Pee Tape dossier at three makeup artists who were just trying to do their job . Eat Arby's.

Why would we do this? What did we get in return? This is all I've heard at this point.

Ariz. officials knew of issues with voting machines a day before Tuesday's primary

Arizona officials knew on Monday about issues plaguing voting machines at certain polling locations, a day before the state's primary elections, according to The Associated Press.

Polling sites across the state have faced technical difficulties throughout the day, as voters pick nominees for U.S. House and Senate seats, as well as state and local offices.


Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes said at a press conference Tuesday morning that his office had been alerted to issues with voting equipment when troubleshooters were testing polling sites on Monday, The Arizona Republic reported.
Fontes said a contractor was supposed to provide more than 100 technicians, but only 70 were available, according to the Republic.

“I would be surprised if there were fewer than 100 (polling places impacted),” Fontes said. Fontes said the contractor in charge of the voting machines did not set them up on time at several locations.

Maker of 3D-printed guns begins selling blueprints, despite court order

The owner of a company that builds 3D-printed guns said he has begun selling blueprints of the weapons to elude a court order on Monday that banned him from giving the plans away for free.

Cody Wilson, the founder of Defense Distributed, said that he interpreted Monday's federal court order to mean that he could not put gun blueprints online to be downloaded for free. Instead, he said, he is now selling the blueprints to customers, letting them name their own price and then emailing or shipping the plans to them.
"Anyone who wants these files is going to get them. I'm gonna sell it to them, I'm gonna ship them. That began this morning," Wilson said. "That will never be interrupted. The free exchange of these ideas will never be interrupted."
