Katy Tur clamins it does not matter to Trump fans if there is no wall--they will love him anyway...

I think that 40 % or some will be a bit disappointed but accept Trump--for working hard to get it. Katy is right.

.@KatyTurNBC - who covered Trump’s campaign extensively - just made THE point: Trump’s base isn’t holding him to a wall. They are sufficiently devoted to him that if he said “no wall” they’d accept it just because he said so. It’s conservative media that’s holding him to a wall.

I'm waiting to hear back from ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox broadcast about whether they will carry Trump's prime time address tomorrow night. The networks don't automatically say yes when a president asks for airtime.

I disagree with him. A Wall is a Wall.

Coons: Trump's steel-slat proposal is 'progress' toward ending shutdown

Sen. Chris Coons said Monday that President Donald Trump's shift from insisting on a concrete wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to a steel slat barrier marks a "minor but important" step towards compromise on solving the ongoing government shutdown.

Coons (D-Del.), in an interview with Fox News's "Fox & Friends," urged the president to stick with his proposal, made to Democrats over the weekend alongside additional funding for other needs at the southern border. The lawmaker called the idea “a minor but important difference in technology,” with the caveat that Trump has at times been inconsistent in his demands and rhetoric on the issue.

.......................................

“A fourth century concrete wall that you can't see through will be a less effective border barrier,” Coons said Monday, noting that the president is seeking additional wall funding even as his administration has yet to exhaust money already appropriated by Conrgess.

“I am someone who is willing to see more border fencing as long as we choose a technology that DHS says is going to be effective and I do think his moving towards steel slats rather than concrete wall, if it holds, is important.”......

The White House continued to insist on a $5.7 billion price tag to end a partial government shutdown on Sunday, declaring for the first time that the U.S. Army will be the primary contractor building President Trump's border wall.

The latest demand, which House Democrats have declared dead on arrival, came in a letter to key Democratic House committee chairs outlining Customs and Border Protection's readiness to break literal new ground with taxpayer dollars.

'In concert with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, CBP has increased its capacity to execute these funds,' said the letter from the White House budget office.

'The Administration's full request would fund construction of a total of approximately 234 miles of new physical barrier and fully fund the top 10 priorities in CBP's Border Security Improvement Plan.'......

Contradicting Trump, Bolton says no withdrawal from Syria until ISIS destroyed, Kurds’ safety guaranteed

White House national security adviser John Bolton on Sunday outlined conditions for a U.S. troop departure from Syria that appeared to contradict President Trump’s insistence less than a month ago that the withdrawal would be immediate and without conditions.

Speaking during a visit to Israel, Bolton said that certain “objectives” must be achieved before a pullout could take place. “The timetable flows from the policy decisions that we need to implement.”

Bolton acknowledged that pockets of the Islamic State remain undefeated and that a quick U.S. pullout could endanger U.S. partners and allies in the region, as well as U.S. forces themselves.

Trump, who has declared the battle won against the militants, and just two weeks ago said he refused military entreaties for more time, said Sunday that he remained committed to the withdrawal but told reporters: “I never said we’re doing it that quickly.”...................

Shutdown is costing farmers, says Farm Bureau official

Source: hillTv

1/7/2019

Farmers are losing payments from the government meant to help them during the trade fight with China because of the government shutdown, a top official with the American Farm Bureau Federation said Monday.
..................................

“We’ve seen a pretty large impact for some producers, that’s where we saw some of the market facilitation payments that are currently delayed because of the government shutdown,” the official, Andrew Walmsley, told Hill.TV's Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on "Rising."
.......................

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in December launched its second and final round of trade mitigation payments, but Walmsley, director of congressional relations for the Farm Bureau, says that relief has since temporarily halted due to the budget impasse.
...............
“It’s slowing down implementation of the Farm Bill right now because USDA employees aren’t able to work, so something we would like to see folks probably get back to work here pretty soon in Washington,” Walmsley told Hill.TV.......................

Two Democratic senators call for blocking votes unrelated to shutdown

Both Democratic senators from Maryland said Sunday that the Senate shouldn't take up any legislation unrelated to the partial government shutdown until a vote is taken to reopen the government.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) wrote on Twitter that Democrats in the Senate "should block consideration of any bills unrelated to opening the government," while also calling on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to allow a vote to reopen the government.

"Senate Democrats should block consideration of any bills unrelated to opening the government until Sen. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans allow a vote on the bipartisan bills the House passed to open the government. Mitch, don’t delay. Let’s vote!" he tweeted.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) wrote..................................

"Agreed. This isn’t business as usual. This is a crisis, a fundamental failure to govern, and Americans are suffering for it," he tweeted. "The Senate should not take up any bills unrelated to reopening the government until @SenateMajLdr lets us vote on exactly that." ................

More coal-fired power plants have closed under Trump than in Obama's first term

JUST WATCHED Coal mines closing despite Trump's promises

..................Many in this corner of coal country blamed Obama-era regulations on their demise, so when a candidate named Donald Trump promised to end a so-called "war on coal," they were ready to believe.

But thanks largely to free-market forces, more coal-fired power plants have been deactivated in Trump's first two years in office then in Obama's entire first term. When asked about the President's claim to be the savior of coal, veteran miner and industry consultant Art Sullivan bristles.

"He's trying to get their votes," he says, standing by the fenced-off entrance to a mine not far from Mitchell where he once served as Face Boss, a coal industry term for managers. "He's lying to them."

.............................
........................................
Trump's EPA -- now led by former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler -- recently moved to lift Obama-era caps on how much poisonous mercury and heat-trapping carbon power plants would be allowed to pump into the sky. The argument was that less regulation could boost the coal industry and perhaps lead to cheaper electricity.................................

There are 16 times more federal workers affected by the #shutdown than there are coal miners in the U.S. Yet, no promises from Trump to “save” the federal workforce or “end the war” on public service. Instead, he just labels them as Democrats and dismisses them.

Graham: GOP wants a Democrat ‘that’s not crazy’ for shutdown talks

By VICTORIA GUIDA 01/06/2019 12:44 PM EST

.................................

“We’ll have offers on the table when we find somebody that’s not crazy to deal with,” Graham said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “We’re not going to put any offers on the table as long as people in charge of these negotiations accuse all of us who want a wall of being a racist.”

He did not refer to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) by name, but criticized her answer to a question of whether she would be open to putting one dollar toward funding the border wall. “A dollar? A dollar? Yeah, one dollar,” she told reporters Thursday.

Graham expressed willingness to negotiate instead with Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who appeared on the CBS program before him.

“When you see Dick Durbin and others in the room, not a bunch of staffers, when you see this rhetoric that those who want to build a wall are racist stop, when you see the idea one dollar’s enough for the wall, when that stuff ends, the real negotiations begin,” he said.

“Right now, the people running the show on the left are radical liberal Democrats who don’t see a border security problem, they see their own government being the problem,” he said. “There’s a deal to be had here, but it will include a wall.”............................

Durbin: Shutdown deal remains elusive because Trump "doesn't care"

Source: msn.com

Camilo Montoya-Galvez 6 hrs ago

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-highest ranking Democrat in the Senate, said lawmakers and the White House remain deeply divided over budget negotiations to reopen the government, saying President Trump "doesn't care" if the partial shutdown continues to drag on.

"I can't say that we're close, because the president has made it clear he doesn't care," Durbin said on "Face the Nation" Sunday. "He's prepared to see a shutdown for months and even said years, and reaffirmed that before the cameras. It was stunning to hear a president of the United States say that about his own government, a government we elected him to lead."

...................

Durbin dismissed Mr. Trump's repeated accusations that Democrats are not supporting funds for a border wall only because he made the issue an integral theme of his campaign and White House agenda.

"Well, I would just say, do you remember the president's words? How could you forget? A concrete wall 2,000 miles long from sea to shining sea paid for by the Mexicans. How many times did he say that to the American people?" Durbin said. "That is not what any of us have ever voted for in the past."......................................
