Trump had a plan to 'blow up' the G7 and give the 'middle finger' to our allies: report

Source: raw story

Published 11 hours ago on August 24, 2019

President Donald Trump’s plan was to bully our G7 allies on a range of issues by touting the strong U.S. economy. As The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent wrote Friday morning, “Trump will proclaim his ‘America First’ agenda a smashing success, and throw that in the faces of our European allies.”

That plan will have to be changed now that his trade war with China just exploded.

China imposed tariffs of $75 billion of U.S. goods on Friday. Trump launched a tweetstorm causing the DOW to drop more than 600 points (at several times during the day more than 700 points.)

Trump storm blows into Macron’s G7 seaside summit

US officials rail against French president over agenda as trade tensions rise.

..................................The global outlook is also souring quickly because of worsening ties between South Korea and Japan, two powerhouses of high-end manufacturing, which has raised fears that global supply chains will be increasingly disrupted in sectors such as chemicals and semiconductors.

"Trade wars among G7 members will lead to weakening the already eroding trust among us" — Donald Tusk, European Council president

If that weren't enough, the World Trade Organization's appellate body — the highest international court that is meant to stop trade returning to an unsupervised law of the jungle — is close to collapse, largely thanks to Trump's refusal to allow the appointment of judges.

World trade returns to the law of the jungle

The coming years are likely to focus more on diplomacy and power rather than legal rights.

Global trade is reverting to the most established doctrine of them all: Might is right.

https://www.politico.eu/article/wto-gatt-trade-tariffs-dispute-back-to-gatt-law-of-the-jungle-returns-to-tradeland/

U.S. President Donald Trump is on track to kill the World Trade Organization's highest court next year, which means the world is now poised to take a giant leap backwards to the years before 1995 in terms of resolving trade disputes.

Before the mid-1990s, trade was governed by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, which allowed something closer to the law of the jungle to prevail. Big countries and trade blocs had a far greater ability to steamroller their will over smaller nations. Conflicts were resolved by diplomatic muscle rather than the strict letter of trade law.

Officials in Geneva, Brussels and Washington said the U.S. administration, led by Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, had made a calculation that GATT rules are in America's strategic interest.

“Lighthizer wants to go back to the days of the GATT, that’s obvious,” said one EU official.

"One former member of the Appellate Body said that the U.S. was asphyxiating the Appellate Body. My own view is: It's more of an assisted suicide" — Alan Wolff

America's tactic to return to GATT is to block the appointment of judges at the Appellate Body, the WTO's top court, that works on everything ranging from the dumping of ultra-cheap Chinese steel, to the eternal subsidy battle between Boeing and Airbus. By December 2019, or earlier, the court will not be able to function because there simply won't be enough judges......................................

Fed Appeals Court Rules Kim Davis Can Be Sued Over Gay Marriage License Refusals

Source: TPM

August 24, 2019 11:58 am

A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that the Kentucky county clerk who gained notoriety for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2015 can be sued, Reuters reported.

The 3-0 decision by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati upheld a previous ruling by U.S. District Judge David Bunning in Kentucky that Kim Davis can be sued in her individual capacity for the denial of licenses to same-sex couples after the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in 2015. The decision will toss the lawsuits from two couples pursuing a lawsuit against Davis back into his court.

Trump-Loving Extremist Gets Backing From Trump Team

A former Republican U.S. Congressman who has a long record of anti-LGBTQ comments and positions is running to unseat a Democratic U.S. Senator. Jason Lewis, who has claimed same-sex parents may harm children announced he is running against Minnesota Democratic Senator Tina Smith.

Lewis, a conservative talk radio host for 25 years has lost two of his three congressional campaigns, but served for one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 2016 he won his House seat, only to be defeated in 2018 by Angie Craig, a lesbian and the Democrat who was his opponent in the 2016 race.

Politico calls Lewis Trump’s “Minnesota mini-me,” based on his love of President Donald Trump, and reports “two of Trump’s top political lieutenants” are guiding him.

But Lewis’ viability will be a test of just how much Minnesota voters will support a bigoted and extremist candidate who literally supports the right of people to own slaves.

Trump Administration Urges US Supreme Court to Declare Firing a Worker for Being Gay Is Legal

The Trump administration has just urged the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that firing an employee simply because they are gay is perfectly legal. The request comes in the form of a 34-page amicus brief, which was not required, but voluntary.

The brief, signed by Trump Solicitor General Noel Francisco, tells the Court it is the opinion of the administration’s Dept. of Justice that a “plain text” reading of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 do9es not protect gay people in the workplace from discrimination, including firing for being gay, as The Washington Blade, which was first to report, notes.

“The question here is not whether Title VII should forbid employment discrimination because of sexual orientation, but whether it already does,” the brief says. “The statute’s plain text makes clear that it does not; discrimination because of ‘sex’ forbids treating members of one sex worse than similarly situated members of the other — and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, standing alone, does not result in such treatment.”

President Trump has also stated he will not sign the Equality Act, which would specify that the Civil Rights of Act of 1964 does protect LGBTQ people from discrimination...

As usual, the Fed did NOTHING! It is incredible that they can “speak” without knowing or asking what I am doing, which will be announced shortly. We have a very strong dollar and a very weak Fed. I will work “brilliantly” with both, and the U.S. will do great...

The Trump Doctrine Is Sicker and More Terrifying Than Ever: It's whatever oozes out of his brain at

Trump is actually getting rather scary to me.

WTF
The Trump Doctrine Is Sicker and More Terrifying Than Ever

It’s whatever oozes out of his brain at any given moment, and this week may already constitute the most gob-smacking series of oozes in his presidency.

Updated 08.22.19 4:01PM ET / Published 08.21.19 4:57PM ET

You’ve heard of the Truman Doctrine. The Reagan Doctrine. The Bush Doctrine. The Powell Doctrine. The Obama Doctrine. Maybe you liked them, maybe you didn’t. But they existed, and you could roughly define what they were.

But what in the world is the Trump Doctrine? It’s whatever oozes out of his brain at any given moment, and this week may already constitute the most gob-smacking series of oozes in his presidency. I know that’s a big claim, but seriously. We all should, even though it’s shocking and potentially dangerous to the world, savor this moment in a way. It’s not often we get to see any public person, let alone the president of the United States, melt down like this in front of our eyes.

First: Russia back in the G8? Hey, why not! It was Barack Obama’s fault in the first place! Yes, maybe the Russians shot down a commercial airliner, killing 300 people. And maybe they invaded a sovereign country—where they’re still at war, by the way, which they always denied perpetrating. And maybe the entire rest of the G8 agreed that Russia had to go.

But Obama did it, and if Obama did it, it has to be undone. And what better time than right after a mysterious nuclear explosion that Russia says is none of the world’s business?

I love to imagine Vladimir Putin’s reaction when he hears something like this. Do you think this murderer and kleptocrat and enemy of democracy ever dared to imagine that the president of the United States of America would be his biggest idiot apologist? He and his cronies must sit around the Kremlin laughing about it every day.

Oh, and wait. “The Soviet Union became Russia because of Afghanistan”? If Trump has ever heard the words “perestroika” and “glasnost,” he probably thinks they have something to do with Moscow models urinating.

Second, we have the Denmark cancellation. ...................................................

El Paso hospital forced to call out Trump's lie that surgeons left the operating room to see him

Source: raw story

Published 1 min ago on August 22, 2019

President Donald Trump bragged that he got an overwhelming welcome from Ohio and Texas when he went to visit survivors of the mass shootings before his latest vacation. Now, however, El Paso’s University Medical Center is being forced to dispute the president’s account of events.

“Not only did they meet with me, they were pouring out of the room. The doctors were coming out of the operating rooms. There were hundreds and hundreds of people all over the floor. You couldn’t even walk on it. So, you know, there’s a lot to happen,” Trump told reporters on the White House lawn Wednesday.

“At no time did, or would, physicians or staff leave active operating rooms during the presidential visit. Our priority is always patient care,” UMC spokesman Ryan Mielke told ABC-7.

The only survivor of the mass shooting who met with the president was the baby whose parents shielded her body, dying in the process. No one else wanted to meet with Trump.
