Matthew Yglesias: Trump’s 1st presidential debate confirmed he has no idea what he’s talking about

Donald Trump’s first presidential debate confirmed he has no idea what he’s talking about

....................But beyond the personal controversies, he rather clearly has no idea what he’s talking about.

Trump doesn’t know much about the economy

Trump explained that he talks about how rich he is “not in a braggadocious way” but because “it's time that this country has somebody running the country who has an idea about money.”

And yet from his very first statement in the debate, Trump revealed a frankly bizarre level of ignorance about economic policy.

Literally the first thing Trump said after thanking the moderator was that “our jobs are fleeing the country” when, in fact, employment has been steadily increasing for years.
Three sentences later, he said the Chinese “are devaluing their currency and there's nobody in our government to fight them,” when, in fact, the Chinese are trying to prop up the value of their currency in the face of a massive investor exodus from Chinese real estate.
He also said the Chinese “are using our country as a piggy bank to rebuild China,” which isn’t even how piggy banks work, much less the US-Chinese economic relationship.
He said that Mexico is feasting on American manufacturing and “building the bigger plants in the world” when, in fact, Tesla is currently building the biggest factory in the world right in California. The existing biggest factory in the world is also in the United States, and is where Boeing jumbo jets are built. No. 3 is a Mitsubishi plant located in Illinois.

One could continue with the factual specifics here, but the overarching theme is pretty clear: The Republicans nominated someone who doesn’t know anything about his signature issue. .......................................

Trump came to pick a fight.
Clinton came to open a conversation with the American people.
And that settled it.

Donald Trump did everything he possibly could to throw Hillary Clinton off her game.

The Republican nominee for president came to bully his Democratic opponent and the moderator of the first debate of the fall campaign. He interrupted Clinton’s remarks constantly, aggressively, and obnoxiously. He sneered and shrugged and sniffled. He grimaced and grumbled. And then he interrupted some more.
.........................

Then, as Trump was racing through an economic rant, moderator Lester Holt finally said: “Let me let Secretary Clinton get in here.”

Clinton calmly looked away from Trump and toward the tens of millions of American people who were watching the debate and offered a sobering history lesson.

“Well,” she said, “let’s stop for a second and remember where we were eight years ago. We had the worst financial crisis, the Great Recession, the worst since the 1930s. That was in large part because of tax policies that slashed taxes on the wealthy, failed to invest in the middle class, took their eyes off of Wall Street, and created a perfect storm.

“In fact, Donald was one of the people who rooted for the housing crisis. He said, back in 2006, ‘Gee, I hope it does collapse, because then I can go in and buy some and make some money.’ Well, it did collapse.”

Trump knew he was in trouble. .....................

Trump in 2004: Pregnancy Is an 'Inconvenience' to Employers

by Ali Vitali

Donald Trump has said that pregnancy is "wonderful" - unless you're an employer.

In an October 2004 interview with NBC's Dateline, Trump said pregnancy is "a wonderful thing for the woman, it's a wonderful thing for the husband, it's certainly an inconvenience for a business. And whether people want to say that or not, the fact is it is an inconvenience for a person that is running a business." ....................
