Kelly Loeffler Readies Defense of Stock Transactions

Source: politico wire.

May 4, 2020 at 12:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 92 Comments

Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) will reserve about $4 million worth of airtime for a trio of new ads pushing back on criticism about her stock transactions during the coronavirus pandemic, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

The ads label the scrutiny from opponents, including Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), as “liberal lies” and claim she’s “unfairly targeted all because she’s a strong conservative woman.”

Who is Devin Nunes suing?
Republican Rep. Devin Nunes has filed seven lawsuits against media companies, activists and the investigative research firm behind the Steele Dossier. He alleges they cospired against his re-election and harmed his reputation. By Alyssa Hodenfield
WASHINGTON

The attorney representing Rep. Devin Nunes in six lawsuits has received two recent, rare warnings from judges that raise the prospect of courts sanctioning him.

People and organizations that Nunes’ attorney, Steven Biss, is suing have begun asking judges to punish him in several other instances.

Three of the requests for sanctions – from National Public Radio, Twitter and a government whistleblower advocate – mark an escalation in their defense against defamation lawsuits Biss has filed........................

...............

Nunes “ignored that warning,” the Fusion GPS motion reads, arguing the new complaint “is so packed with irrelevant, frivolous and malicious allegations that it is impossible to decipher what conduct (Nunes) alleges is unlawful.”

Nunes is not a client in every case where lawyers are asking courts to discipline his attorney, but the cases share some common themes. In each one, Biss has filed fiery complaints alleging that news organizations and various Democratic activists conspired to harm his clients.

Trump angry with FBI's Christopher Wray and wants to replace him: report

Source: raw story

Published 4 hours ago on May 4, 2020

According to a report from Axios, Donald Trump is reportedly angry with FBI Director Christopher Wray for staying silent on the recent revelations in the Michael Flynn case and would like to dump him.

The report, from Jonathan Swan, notes the president is being restrained from another firing by close aides and Attorney General Bill Barr.

“Trump’s dissatisfaction with Wray — whom he nominated for the post in 2017 after firing Jim Comey — is nothing new,” Swan wrote. “A source who has discussed the FBI director repeatedly with the president said Trump ‘has never felt like Wray was his guy’ and does not trust him to ‘change the culture’ of the FBI.”

The report goes on to note, “Trump was especially angered by what he views as Wray’s reluctance to publicly criticize actions taken by Comey and by Wray’s relatively muted reaction to the FBI’s misconduct in seeking the surveillance of Trump campaign associate Carter Page.”

According to the report, close aides to Trump have started a whisper campaign against the now-embattled FBI director, hinting to the president that Wray has no interest in rooting out what they perceive to be “corruption” within the agency..................................

The vice president was the only one at the event not wearing a facial covering.

Vice President Mike Pence says he made a mistake last week when he visited the Mayo Clinic and didn’t wear a mask amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“I didn’t think it was necessary, but I should have worn a mask,” Pence said during a Fox News virtual town hall on Sunday.

Just weeks after the controversial decision to hold Wisconsin’s early April elections amid a pandemic, voters in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District are being asked to return to the polls on May 12.

The special election in Wisconsin’s northernmost congressional district will decide who fills the vacancy left by Republican Rep. Sean Duffy, who resigned from his U.S. House seat in September. It pits state Sen. Tom Tiffany, R-Minocqua, against Democrat Tricia Zunker, who is Wausau’s School Board president and an associate justice on the Ho-Chunk Nation Supreme Court. The winner will serve only until January; the seat will be up for grabs again in November.

In pre-election fundraising totals reported Thursday, Tiffany brought in $145,000 during the first three weeks of April, bringing his fundraising total to more than $1.35 million. Over the same period, Zunker raised just shy of $155,000. To date, the tribal judge has raised just over $450,000.

The district, which encompasses much of northwestern Wisconsin, was traditionally a Democratic stronghold. Dave Obey held the seat for 42 years until his retirement a decade ago. He was succeeded by Duffy, who first won the seat in 2010. Since redistricting after the 2010 Census, the district has voted 8 percentage points more Republican than the national average in the last two presidential elections, according to the Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election tracker.

With the April 7 election behind them, municipal clerks in the district say they feel more prepared to manage the election during a pandemic.
.........................................
Broadband access is “essentially a utility at this point,” she said, adding “we see that now more than ever with COVID-19 with students that don’t have access to their classes because they can’t get online.”

If elected, Zunker would make history on several accounts. She would be the first Native American to represent Wisconsin in Congress, which she said would be a “deep honor” and “quite humbling.” Additionally, she would be the first woman to represent the district and would be just the second single parent currently serving in Congress.

If she loses, she said, she is “absolutely running again” in November.

“I’m ready to work hard for the people of Wisconsin in Congress,” Zunker said.............................

Trump says up to 100,000 Americans may die from coronavirus

Source: Reuters

Reuters•May 3, 2020 By Nandita Bose and Pete Schroeder

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he now believes as many as 100,000 Americans could die in the coronavirus pandemic, after the death toll passed his earlier estimates, but said he was confident a vaccine would be developed by the year's end.

Trump alternated during a two-hour virtual town hall broadcast by FOX News between forecasting a rapid recovery for the U.S. economy and casting blame for the pandemic's spread on China, where the disease is believed to have originated.

The COVID-19 illness, caused by the new coronavirus, has sickened more than 1.1 million in the United States and killed more than 67,000 Americans, shut wide swaths of society, including most schools and many businesses. https://tmsnrt.rs/2w7hX9T

"We're going to lose anywhere from 75, 80 to 100,000 people. That's a horrible thing," said Trump, who as recently on Friday had said he hoped fewer than 100,000 Americans would die and earlier in the week had talked about 60,000 to 70,000 deaths..............
