CREW Requests @FEMA Records on Coronavirus #PPE Seizures

ICYMI--
CREW is doing great work.

CREW Requests FEMA Records on Coronavirus PPE Seizures

https://www.citizensforethics.org/foia/fema-coronavirus-ppe-seizures/

April 21, 2020

Given reports that federal authorities are seizing and rerouting personal protective equipment (PPE) supply shipments intended for states, the public needs to know if the federal government is in fact interfering with states’ ability to get needed supplies to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Soon after Trump designated the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on March 17 as the agency managing federal procurement of supplies, states started to report seizures of PPE shipments. In late March, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker reported that federal authorities seized 3 million protective masks. In early April, federal authorities in New Jersey seized 35,000 masks for frontline workers. More recently, Virginia Senator Mark Warner stated that the federal government had “delayed or restricted” PPE delivery to two Virginia hospital systems.

CREW has requested documents from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at large on PPE seizures or re-routing by the agency.

Protective equipment is crucial to the ongoing pandemic response effort and the public has an urgent interest in understanding the federal government’s role in obtaining and distributing it. If FEMA is, indeed, seizing shipments of PPE destined for local hospitals, the public has a right to know. FEMA’s conflict with states that have clashed with Trump throughout the response effort is not new; in late March, there were reports of unequal distribution of PPE supplies from the Strategic National Stockpile to states, seemingly based on favoritism. The requested materials would reveal any yet-unreported instances of PPE seizures, and could also shed light on the true extent of FEMA’s involvement in the previously reported instances.

Read the requests here and here.

Ivanka Trump said she didn’t know using private email for government business was illegal
Ivanka Trump sent over 100 official emails through her private acct, even after her father condemned Hillary for the same.

https://votebluenews.com/2020/05/14/ivanka-trump-said-she-didnt-know-using-private-email-for-government-business-was-illegal/

For most of 2017, Ivanka Trump used her personal email account to correspond with White House aides and Cabinet members, the Washington Post reported in 2018. The president’s daughter has explained away the misconduct by saying she simply did not know it was a potential violation of federal records law.

Nearly 100 emails were sent from Ivanka Trump that discussed official government business. Ivanka’s representatives maintain that many of those emails were in response to people contacting Ivanka first. Ivanka claims she did not know it was a rule, despite her father and his administration harping on former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for a similar issue.

Sources told the Post that Ivanka wasn’t looped in on White House emails reminding employees not to use their private accounts. Mirijanian, a spokesman for Abbe Lowell and Ivanka Trump’s ethics lawyer, told the Post that “while transitioning into government, after she was given an official account but until the White House provided her the same guidance they had given others who started before she did, Ms. Trump sometimes used her personal account, almost always for logistics and scheduling concerning her family,”

GOP Senator Blocks Resolution Calling For CDC Guidelines To Be Released

Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN) blocked the release of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's guidelines for reopening the economy.
By Ed Scarce

The senator from Indiana said the CDC's guidelines were "overly prescriptive", meaning I suppose, that they would have saved more American lives and that would be bad for business. And interestingly, though American taxpayers fund the CDC to the tune of about $7 billion a year, a good chunk of which is mandated to protect Americans from infectious diseases, those same American taxpayers are not entitled to see the CDC guidelines for reopening the economy if they go against the wishes of the Trump administration.

The banality of evil strikes again.

Source: CNN

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday failed to pass a resolution by unanimous consent that called for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to immediately release its guidance on reopening the economy.

The Democrat from New York argued that President Donald Trump's administration "simply cannot be trusted to tell the truth about the coronavirus" and "Americans need and must have the candid guidance of our best scientists, unfiltered, unedited and uncensored by President Trump," in order to reopen the country as safely as possible amid the pandemic.

"The President is not a scientist ... it has become painfully clear over the last two months how unfamiliar he is with the disciplines of science and medicine," Schumer said. "Anyone who would say drink bleach, use bleach to protect yourself is not much of a medical expert."

Any individual senator can block a measure seeking to advance by unanimous consent, and Sen. Mike Braun, a Republican from Indiana, objected to the resolution Wednesday. He argued Schumer is just trying to add "bureaucratic hurdles" to "shutter the economy" using the CDC's "over prescriptive guidelines."................

Trump's marks for handling COVID-19 outbreak decline -- CBS News poll

Source: cbs

Updated on: May 14, 2020 / 10:37 AM / CBS News

Americans continue to say they trust medical professionals for virus information, but Republicans also rank President Trump about as highly among their trusted sources, even as others give him his lowest marks to date for handling the outbreak.

And Dr. Anthony Fauci is trusted by most and viewed favorably by a three-to-one margin, but he now draws split opinions among Republicans, driven by increasingly negative views from conservatives.

image017.jpg
image018.jpg
image019-1.jpg

Views of President Trump's handling of the outbreak continue to drop from March and are now the lowest he has received. Today, 43% say he's doing a good job, 5 points lower than three weeks ago and 10 points lower than in March.

image020-1.jpg

This decline has most recently been driven by political independents, among whom a four-in-10 plurality now say Trump is doing a "very" bad job, as compared to a "somewhat" bad job, and that description has increased from a few weeks ago. .....................................

'See you in court': ACLU sues Betsy DeVos over new campus sexual assault rules

Source: nbc news

The suit says Title IX changes will make it "more difficult for victims of sexual harassment or sexual assault to continue their educations."

May 14, 2020, 2:49 PM CDT By Erik Ortiz

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos' revised federal guidelines on how sexual assault allegations should be handled on college and K-12 campuses is the target of a federal lawsuit filed Thursday, claiming the changes would "inflict significant harm" on victims and "dramatically undermine" their civil rights.

The suit, filed on behalf of four advocacy groups for sexual assault survivors, including Know Your IX and Girls for Gender Equity, is the first that attempts to block the Department of Education's new provisions before they go into effect on Aug. 14.

The rules championed by DeVos effectively bolster the rights of due process for those accused of sexual assault and harassment, allowing for live hearings and cross examinations. It's what agency officials say was lacking under the Obama administration to protect all students under Title IX, a 1972 law that prohibits gender discrimination, including sexual assault, at schools.

"This new federal effort to weaken Title IX makes it more difficult for victims of sexual harassment or sexual assault to continue their educations and needlessly comes amid a global pandemic," according to the suit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Maryland by the American Civil Liberties Union and the New York-based law firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP.

The suit names DeVos, the Education Department and Kenneth Marcus, the agency's assistant secretary of civil rights. The department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the complaint.
DeVos proposes changes to the way colleges handle complaints of sexual misconduct
Nov. 16, 201801:32

DeVos last week denied that the final rule would discourage victims from coming forward to report abuse and instead, allows for schools to be more balanced in how they review claims, rather than through what she called a "kangaroo court" approach.

But Tabacco Mar argues that it creates a "double standard" for how schools must treat sexual discrimination complaints compared to how they handle allegations of race, national origin and disability discrimination.......................................................

Trump tells LindseyGraham to haul in Obama to testify a/b a 'political crime' that no one can define

Lindsey will hold off for a while but he will be licking Trumps boots soon on this. I have no doubt about that.

Trump tells Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham to haul in Obama to testify about a 'political crime' that no one can define

https://news.yahoo.com/trump-tells-republican-sen-lindsey-153732747.html

,Business Insider•May 14, 2020

President Donald Trump called on Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to have former President Barack Obama testify about "the biggest political crime and scandal" in US history.

Trump was presumably referring to "Obamagate," a conspiracy theory that accuses Obama administration officials of masterminding the Russia investigation and targeting Trump officials in politically motivated reasons.

"If I were a Senator or Congressman, the first person I would call to testify about the biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA, by FAR, is former President Obama," Trump tweeted on Thursday. "He knew EVERYTHING. Do it @LindseyGrahamSC, just do it. No more Mr. Nice Guy. No more talk!"

Graham later told Politico he would not call Obama in to testify.

"I don't think now's the time for me to do that. I don't know if that's even possible," Graham said, adding, "I understand President Trump's frustration, but be careful what you wish for.".........................................

Fight erupts at Michigan Capitol protest over noose; police take ax

Source: The Detroit News

Updated 1:26 p.m. ET May 14, 2020

Lansing — Tension mounted at Thursday's Michigan Capitol demonstration about Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's shutdown orders when two protesters fought over a noose display, and police confiscated an ax.

A brief skirmish occurred when some protesters objected to another demonstrator's display of a doll with a noose around its neck, along with an American flag, witnesses said.

Other protesters objected to the noose display, worried it would depict the group as violent, protester Katie Rogowicz said.

A person snatched the flag away from the man and, when he tried to retrieve it, another protester pushed him to the ground, Rogowicz said.

“That wasn’t right,” she said about the actions against the man. “He has the right to do it.”

An individual involved in the incident had an ax that was given to law enforcement, police said. No one was injured.

Michigan State Police described the incident in a tweet as a fight in which "one demonstrator tried to take a sign out of another demonstrator's hand. ... The victim is a 60-year-old male." No arrests were made, police said.................
