Trump claims Kavanaugh is "under assault," casts doubt on Ford

Source: Axios

President Trump defended his Supreme Court nominee -- who has been accused of sexual assault -- on Twitter Friday and suggested that his accuser should have reported the alleged attack to police when it happened:

"Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a fine man, with an impeccable reputation, who is under assault by radical left wing politicians who don't want to know the answers, they just want to destroy and delay. Facts don't matter. I go through this with them every single day in D.C. ... I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents. I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!"
-- Trump on Twitter

Why it matters: Until now, Trump has shown restraint and hasn't questioned Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford. That ended with this morning's tweet. Aa source who has been talking to the president throughout the Kavanaugh crisis told Axios' Jonathan Swan that "you have no idea" how hard it has been to keep him from attacking his Supreme Court nominee's accuser.

Ed Whelan Apologizes For Naming Kavanaugh Classmate As Blasey Ford's Alleged Attacker

Source: TPM

After writing a (now removed) thread on Twitter that sparked instant, widespread backlash, president of the conservative Ethics and Public Policy Center Ed Whelan apologized for identifying the hypothetical perpetrator in his speculation that professor Christine Blasey Ford’s sexual assault allegation is a case of mistaken identity.

I made an appalling and inexcusable mistake of judgment in posting the tweet thread in a way that identified Kavanaugh’s Georgetown Prep classmate. I take full responsibility for that mistake, and I deeply apologize for it. I realize that does not undo the mistake.

— Ed Whelan (@EdWhelanEPPC) September 21, 2018

Whelan is a respected figure in Washington but presented his pure guesswork as a substantiated theory with floor plans and online evidence, recklessly naming another Georgetown Prep student as the alleged perpetrator because he bears a resemblance to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Blasey Ford shot down the theory in a statement. “I knew them both and socialized with [the man Whelan accused],” she said. “There is zero chance that I would confuse them.”

SC congressman jokes about Supreme Court sexual assault amid Kavanaugh drama

Source: The Post and Courier

A South Carolina GOP congressman opened an election debate Thursday by joking that he almost had to miss it and fly back to Washington to address the latest drama involving the Supreme Court.

"Did y'all hear this latest late-breaking news from the Kavanaugh hearings?" said U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, R-Rock Hill. "Ruth Bader Ginsburg came out that she was groped by Abraham Lincoln."

The off-color remark comes as President Donald Trump's nominee for a Supreme Court appointment, Brett Kavanaugh, remains embroiled in scandal after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her when he was 17. Kavanaugh has denied the allegation from California professor Christine Blasey Ford.

Norman's line appeared to elicit some scattered nervous laughter and applause from the Kiwanis Club of Rock Hill crowd but drew immediate condemnation from South Carolina Democrats and many others on social media.

No jail time for man who pleaded guilty in choking assault

An Anchorage man walked out of court a free man Wednesday after changing his plea in the case of a brazen midday assault in which charging documents say he offered a woman a ride, then strangled her unconscious and masturbated on her.

An Anchorage grand jury indicted Justin Schneider, 34, on four felony charges including kidnapping and assault, and one misdemeanor count of Harassment I--offensive contact with fluids -- for the August 2017 incident.

Schneider struck a deal with the state, pleading guilty to a single felony assault charge in exchange for a sentence of two years with one suspended. Schneider faces no additional jail time. He received credit for time served while wearing an ankle monitor and living with his family.

...

Schneider then stopped the SUV on 36th east of Wisconsin Street, and asked the victim to get out while he loaded items into the vehicle. Once she approached the rear of the vehicle, Sarber wrote, Schneider “full on tackled” her, shoving her to the ground. He then began to strangle her with both hands around her throat, telling her that he was going to kill her.

"She said she could not fight him off, he was too heavy and had her down being choked to death," Sarber wrote. " (The victim) said she lost consciousness, thinking she was going to die."

When the victim woke up, she told police, Schneider was rising from her and zipping up his pants. He offered her a tissue, which police later recovered as evidence.

"The man told her that he wasn't really going to kill her, that he needed her to believe she was going to die so that he could be sexually fulfilled," Sarber wrote.

'No accident' Brett Kavanaugh's female law clerks 'looked like models', Yale professor told students

Guardian learns Amy Chua said she would advise students on their physical look to help win post in Kavanaugh’s chambers

A top professor at Yale law school who strongly endorsed supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh as a “mentor to women” privately told a group of law students last year that it was “not an accident” that Kavanaugh’s female law clerks all “looked like models” and would provide advice to students about their physical appearance if they wanted to work for him, the Guardian has learned.

Amy Chua, a Yale professor who wrote a bestselling book on parenting called Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, was known for instructing female law students who were preparing for interviews with Kavanaugh on ways they could dress to exude a “model-like” femininity to help them win a post in Kavanaugh’s chambers, according to sources.

Kavanaugh is facing intense scrutiny in Washington following an allegation made by Christine Blasey Ford that he forcibly held her down and groped her while they were in high school. He has denied the allegation. The accusation has mired Kavanaugh’s confirmation in controversy, drawing parallels to allegations of sexual harassment against Justice Clarence Thomas by Anita Hill in the 1990s.

Yale provided Kavanaugh with many of the judge’s clerks over the years, and Chua played an outsized role in vetting the clerks who worked for him. But the process made some students deeply uncomfortable.

One source said that in at least one case, a law student was so put off by Chua’s advice about how she needed to look, and its implications, that she decided not to pursue a clerkship with Kavanaugh, a powerful member of the judiciary who had a formal role in vetting clerks who served in the US supreme court.

In one case, Jed Rubenfeld, also an influential professor at Yale and who is married to Chua, told a prospective clerk that Kavanaugh liked a certain “look”.

“He told me, ‘You should know that Judge Kavanaugh hires women with a certain look,’” one woman told the Guardian. “He did not say what the look was and I did not ask.”

27 years ago, 1600 black women took out a full page ad in the NYT to show support for Anita Hill. I was 20 years old. I put $25 toward the price of the ad and signed my name.
