U.S. warned Sweden of 'negative consequences' if ASAP Rocky wasn't released

Source: NBC News

The U.S. government warned Sweden of "negative consequences" as it advocated for rapper ASAP Rocky during his trial for assault charges in Stockholm this week, according to a pair of letters released by the Swedish Prosecution Authority.

Rocky was released from jail on Friday pending the verdict, with President Donald Trump celebrating the news on Twitter. "It was a Rocky Week, get home ASAP A$AP!" Trump said.

The rapper landed back on U.S. soil Saturday, leaving behind him the looming verdict in an episode that has led to unexpected tension between the U.S. and its European ally.

According to the letters, obtained by NBC News partner Aftonbladet, the U.S. special presidential envoy for hostage affairs wrote to Swedish prosecutors urging them to release Rocky.

Michael Avenatti is mulling a run for president again after declaring he would not seek nomination

The firebrand attorney Michael Avenatti is back considering a run for the Democratic nomination for president after he declared last year he wouldn't take part in the contest.

Avenatti, who in the past represented porn star Stormy Daniels against the likes of President Donald Trump and his then fixer Michael Cohen, told CNBC late on Friday that he is yet again contemplating entering the expansive 2020 arena.

"Never say never," he said when asked if he's going to get into the race. "The Dems need a non-traditional fighter. They have a lot of talent but not a lot of fighters." He later noted that the odds of him getting into the race are at 50/50 and he could make his decision in a few months.

"I don't think I need to make a final decision for a number of months. I have the name ID and everyone knows I'm one of the few effective fighters that the Dems have," he said.

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson passes away at the age of 80

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) — Long-time Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson has died. He was 80 years old.

He died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning at his Independence Township home surrounded by family and friends after his battle with pancreatic cancer.

Patterson began his public service to Oakland County more than 40 years ago. He served as Oakland County Prosecutor for 16 years and was elected as executive in 1992, where he served until his death.

During his leadership in Oakland County, the county has been able to maintain its AAA bond rating, and it has been ranked among the best counties in both the state and the country.

R.I.P. L. Brooks Patterson, a racist

Oakland County's longstanding Executive L. Brooks Patterson died at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday from cancer. He was 80.

It seems much of the local media had already lined up obituaries for Patterson, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year. The Detroit Free Press called him a "wise-cracking," "hard-drinking," "native Detroiter known for bashing his hometown, often in racially charged terms." Crain's Detroit Business wrote he was "known as much for his management of the state's wealthiest county as for his sometimes controversial and divisive comments and humor."

We know it's taboo to "speak ill of the dead," but in the style of Brooks, let's call it like we see it, without dulling the edges. The man was a racist, and contributed mightily to metro Detroit's segregation problem.

...

His promise turned out to be true, with Oakland County maintaining its AAA bond rating under Patterson's long, successful reign. However, in Patterson's mind Oakland County could only prosper at the expense of Detroit. From a 2014 New Yorker profile:

“I used to say to my kids, ‘First of all, there’s no reason for you to go to Detroit. We’ve got restaurants out here.’ They don’t even have movie theatres in Detroit — not one. ... I can’t imagine finding something in Detroit that we don’t have in spades here. Except for live sports. We don’t have baseball, football. For that, fine — get in and get out. But park right next to the venue — spend the extra twenty or thirty bucks. And, before you go to Detroit, you get your gas out here. You do not, do not, under any circumstances, stop in Detroit at a gas station! That’s just a call for a carjacking.”

In the same interview, he compared his boycott against the city to genocide against Native Americans:

"I made a prediction a long time ago, and it’s come to pass," he said. "I said, 'What we’re gonna do is turn Detroit into an Indian reservation, where we herd all the Indians into the city, build a fence around it, and then throw in the blankets and corn.'"

...

But last year, Patterson doubled down on his anti-Detroit stance. When asked if he'd join a group of regional business leaders working to help Detroit, Patterson chose the worst possible words.

"Oh, hell no. I'd rather join the Klan," he said.
He later apologized, saying, "Sometimes when I’m passionate about a topic, I choose sharp words and purposely engage in hyperbole to get my point across."

Watchdog group files complaint over Kobach fundraising email

Source: The Hill

A government watchdog group filed a complaint Friday asking the Justice Department to investigate if Kansas Republican Kris Kobach’s Senate campaign violated federal election law by using an email list overseen by the nonprofit where Kobach serves as general counsel.

Washington-based watchdog group Common Cause filed the complaint alleging Kobach and We Build the Wall broke the law when Kobach emailed supporters of the nonprofit group asking for contributions to his Senate bid. The email gave links to the campaign’s official fundraising page and requested “a financial contribution of $50, $100, $250, $500, or any amount up to the maximum of $2,800 per individual.”

We Build the Wall is a nonprofit that directs private donations toward constructing a wall along the southern border with Mexico. Kobach is on the group’s advisory board but his campaign insists it is a separate entity from the nonprofit.

The Kobach campaign in a statement to The Kansas City Star called Common Cause a “radical leftist organization” and said its complaint was baseless.

"It shows this whole thing was slapped together from Trump watching TV," the aide said.

Senior GOP aide tells me there's been surprise that the WH didn't set up a war room to run a rapid response & messaging operation for such a high-profile nomination.

"It shows this whole thing was slapped together from Trump watching TV," the aide said.

https://twitter.com/NatashaBertrand/status/1157387410965237761

“This is part of a pattern from President Trump: nomination on a whim without consultation or vetting, and then forced withdrawal when mess ensues — just like what happened with Herman Cain, Stephen Moore, Ronny Jackson and many more,” he said, referring to previous failed nominees.

Trump defended the White House's vetting process on Friday, calling it "great," but telling reporters, "you vet for me. I like when you vet."

He added: "We save a lot of money that way."

A senior GOP aide expressed surprise that the White House had not set up a war room with experienced communications professionals to run a rapid response and messaging operation for such a high-profile nomination that might have been able to prepare for, and respond to, the inevitable criticism of Ratcliffe's record.

"It kind of shows that this whole thing was slapped together from Trump watching TV," the aide said.

That single quote pretty much sums up the Trump presidency.
