John Dingell in hospice care after cancer diagnosis

Source: The Detroit News

Washington — The family of former U.S. Rep. John Dingell said he is in hospice care after a cancer diagnosis, and they are requesting privacy.

The 92-year-old Dearborn Democrat was diagnosed a year ago with prostate cancer that had metastasized and Dingell decided not to treat it, a family member said Wednesday. He recently went into hospice care.

His wife, Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn, said her husband is in relatively good spirits and even dictated a tweet on Wednesday because he didn't want to not respond to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address.

"He is John Dingell. He is in charge. Ordering everyone around. Doing it his way," she said.

Does anyone know what is going on with John Dingell?

Friends and colleagues know me and know I would be in Washington right now unless something was up. I am home with John and we have entered a new phase. He is my love and we have been a team for nearly 40 years.

I will be taking each day as it comes. We thank people for their friendship and support and ask for prayers and privacy during this difficult time.

In one month, Dana Nessel erases many of Bill Schuette's federal pursuits

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel capped a dizzying first month in office by reversing the state’s position in more than a dozen cases previously steered by her Republican predecessor.

Nessel aligned with three other states and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in seeking to join a federal lawsuit protecting the Affordable Care Act, which previous Attorney General Bill Schuette long opposed.

The progressive Democrat also pulled the state from eight cases related to abortion, LGBTQ rights and the separation of church and state — cases Schuette had joined. In addition to those actions, last Thursday, Nessel for good measure withdrew from cases challenging federal environmental regulations and filed legal briefs advocating for mandatory birth control coverage.

“As Michigan’s Attorney General, I will not use this office to undermine some of the most important values in our state,” Nessel said in announcing the state’s reversals.

Senate approves Syria, anti-BDS bill

Source: The Hill

The Senate passed legislation on Thursday breaking with President Trump’s Syria policy.

Senators voted 77-23 to send the legislation to the House that includes a provision warning Trump against a “precipitous” withdrawal of troops from Syria and Afghanistan.

It also asks the administration to certify that certain conditions have been met "for the enduring defeat of al Qaeda and ISIS before initiating any significant withdrawal of United States forces from Syria or Afghanistan."

The bill was approved after it overcame a filibuster earlier this week.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Netflix Seal Deal as Goop Expands Original Content (EXCLUSIVE)

Goop, the lifestyle and wellness juggernaut founded a decade ago by Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow, is expanding its original content efforts with a new docuseries at Netflix, an exclusive podcast partnership with Delta Airlines, and a slew of programming centered around beauty, food, and books.

Still untitled, Goop’s streaming series will hit Netflix this fall and consist of 30-minute episodes hosted by the site’s editors, chief content officer Elise Loehnen and Paltrow. The team will utilize experts, doctors, and researchers to examine issues relating to physical and spiritual wellness.

“We were speaking to the platform question, and where our people are. They’re watching Netflix. Some of the more strategic, bigger stories we want to tell require a TV budget. Obviously, there’s no better partner in that,” Loehnen told Variety of the deal.

Loehnen’s content team of about 20 will work on shaping the series with Netflix, which she said seeks to dial up the aesthetics and quality of storytelling surrounding issues like mental, physical and sexual health — and address larger thematic questions the Goop audience has about leading optimal lives. It doesn’t hurt that Paltrow knows her way around a Hollywood set. The actress has appeared in over 40 films, including the forthcoming “Avengers: Endgame.”
