'Coastline' Wave Pool

Live data is transmitted from the Atlantic coast to instantly recreate the ocean waves in this fountain at the NOAA headquarters.

Approaching the wave pool sculpture outside the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland, you will see waves crashing against rough-cut granite, rhythmic and memorizing, in various levels of ferocity and grace.

What most people don’t realize is this sculpture, called “Coastline,” is much more amazing than its appearance lets on. These aren’t just random waves, but rather are generated from live biometric data transmitted from the Massachusetts seacoast to instantly recreate the exact ocean waves along a 65-foot section of the Atlantic coast.

When the artist Jim Sanborn created this wonderful wave pool in 1993, he connected it remotely to a sensor on the coastline. The artificial waves are generated by a turbine under the sculpture, while their movement is controlled by the data transmitted from the tide gauge in the town of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The effect is a precise, real-time replica of the Atlantic surf (at one-fourth the size) right outside the NOAA Science Center.

Saudis 'seriously undermined' Turkey's Khashoggi inquiry, says UN expert

Source: The Guardian

The Saudi regime “seriously curtailed and undermined” the Turkish investigation into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, according to a UN human rights expert looking into the case.

Agnes Callamard, a UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings, said the Saudi dissident and Washington Post columnist was the victim of a “brutal, premeditated killing planned and perpetrated by officials of the state of Saudi Arabia”.

Khashoggi was lured into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on the promise of being given documents that would help him remarry. Inside he was suffocated and then his body was dismembered, according to a Turkish investigation.

In a preliminary report, Callamard said that she had heard “parts of the chilling and gruesome audio material obtained and retained by the Turkish intelligence agency”.

Virginia Sen. Tommy Norment was an editor for VMI yearbook filled with racist photos and slurs

A Virginia Military Institute yearbook overseen by future state Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment in 1968 features a host of racist photos and slurs, including blackface.

The revelation about one of Virginia's most powerful Republicans comes as the state’s Democratic governor and attorney general are facing calls to resign over their own admissions they wore blackface as young men.

Norment, R-James City County, was managing editor of The Bomb publication that year. He went to VMI after graduating from James Blair High School in Williamsburg and has been a state senator since 1992.

On one page of the yearbook, a student poses in blackface, surrounded by others in costumes at a party. Another page features a photo of two men in blackface holding a football.

The N-word is used at least once. A student listed as being from Bangkok, Thailand, is referred to as a “Chink” and “Jap.”

Howard Schultz to be featured at CNN town hall in Texas next week

CNN will host a town hall with former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz next week in Texas as the businessman mulls a potential White House bid.

Schultz, who last month began publicly considering running for president as a "centrist independent," will take questions from voters "representing civic and educational organizations" at the Feb. 12 event in Houston, CNN announced Wednesday.

The live event will be moderated by "CNN Newsroom" anchor Poppy Harlow.

Schultz has been the focus of Democratic ire since he announced late last month that he was considering an independent presidential bid.

Why? He has no following whatsoever. No one is interested in him being President, both on the left or on the right.
