POSTPONED: Presidential Alert test headed for your cell phone isn't happening this week after all

Yeah https://abc13.com/fema-postpones-presidential-alert-test/4254214/

FEMA'S Presidential push alert that was scheduled for this week will be pushed back.

Over the weekend, FEMA had announced they would be sending out an alert meant to warn Americans in the event of a national emergency. The alert would be like an AMBER alert.

On Monday, FEMA tweeted that the alert test would be moved due to severe weather across the east coast and the ongoing rescue.

Collins, under indictment, to remain on congressional ballot

In 2006, the Texas Democratic Party sued to keep the GOP from replacing Tom DeLay on the ballot. The Texas and NY statutes are similar. It appears that the GOP has decided not to replace Collins on the ballot https://buffalonews.com/2018/09/17/collins-under-indictment-to-remain-on-congressional-ballot/

Rep. Chris Collins will stay on the congressional ballot in November even though he remains under indictment on insider trading charges, according to four sources familiar with the situation.

The sources, who asked not to be identified, say Collins has heeded the advice of his criminal attorneys who fear the potential complications of protracted election law challenges almost sure to be initiated by Democrats if he removed his name from the congressional ballot.

“It’s very fair to say there’s been a drastic shift,” said one of the sources, referring to the congressman’s earlier commitment to cooperate with local GOP officials and step aside for a substitute candidate. One GOP source noted the decision has always remained an option for Collins and that Republican strategists were prepared for his continuing presence on the ballot; but other sources remain unhappy that the move derails efforts to find a substitute candidate.

Erie County GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy said during an afternoon news conference that he felt like a “groom jilted at the altar” after Collins changed course.

Texas lawyers-Opportunity to volunteer for voter protection

Here is an e-mail that I received from Chad Dunn who is the outside counsel for the Texas Democratic Party.

Dear XXXXXXX,

You are receiving this email because you previously offered assistance with Democratic voter protection efforts here in Texas. Thanks so much for your past support! I hope that I can count on you again this year.

The Texas 2018 Democratic Voter Protection Program will focus on ensuring that our voters are able to cast a ballot that is accurately counted. As I’m sure you know, Texas has a reputation for making voting difficult. From gerrymandered districts to discriminatory photo ID requirements and all means of misdirection and obfuscation in between, voting in Texas can be, for some people, like trying to run an obstacle course inside a maze.

Our Voter Protection team will need thousands of volunteers across the state to serve in various roles, such as election workers, poll watchers, hotline operators, and legal team members. If you can serve in any of these roles, it would be greatly appreciated. I can tell you first hand that being a part of the democratic process is a rewarding experience. Hopefully you can join our efforts this Fall but either way please reach out to others in your network and ask them to join this important effort.

You can sign up to be part of the team today at:

https://txdem.co/VoterProtection

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the TX Voter Protection Director, Sondra Haltom, at 713-369-4325 or Sondra@txdemocrats.org.

I look forward to working with you in the future.
Sincerely,
Chad W. Dunn
General Counsel
Texas Democratic Party

I have worked with Sondra before and she knows her election law. I suspect that the GOP will still attempt to cheat on voter id and not tell voters about the Reasonable Impediment Declaration process where any voter who lacks one of the approved ids can still vote if such voter signs an affidavit.

Tentative deal reached between Manafort and special counsel: Sources

Source: ABC

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has tentatively agreed to a plea deal with special counsel Robert Mueller that will head off his upcoming trial, sources familiar with the negotiations tell ABC News.

The deal is expected to be announced in court Friday, but it remains unclear whether Manafort has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors or is simply conceding to a guilty plea, which would allow him to avoid the stress and expense of trial, according to three sources with knowledge of the discussions.

Juanita Jean-Pete Olson, My Congressvarmint

Pete Olson is an idiot http://juanitajean.com/pete-olson-my-congressvarmint/

Until this year. I’m supporting Sri Preston Kulkarni for this seat and he’s being taken very seriously. That means that Pete has to get out and campaign. Bless his heart.

He blew it and got caught.

I live in the most diverse county in the nation. Pete was asked to speak at the India House to celebrate India’s Independence Day. And out tumbled these words.

“September 11th, 2001: 3,000 innocent Americans were killed by terrorists from Pakistan,” Olson told the audience. “26 November 2008, Mumbai: Two solid days of killing by people trained in Pakistan."

Pete said he misspoke. It’s just coincidence that he misspoke about Pakistan in front of an Indian-American event.

Separated parents would get another chance at asylum under settlement proposal

This is great news https://www.politico.com/story/2018/09/13/migrant-parents-asylum-785734

Migrant parents who failed an asylum screening after being separated from their children at the border would get another chance to seek refuge under a proposed settlement agreement filed Wednesday evening.

The proposed agreement — issued jointly by plaintiffs in three related lawsuits and the Trump administration — outlines a plan to address the asylum claims of parents and children who were split at the border.

Parents who failed an initial interview to determine whether they had “credible fear” to return to their home country, but who remain in the United States, would be granted a new interview under the agreement.

“The reason this is so significant is because when you present yourself at the U.S. border, you get one shot to show you qualify for asylum,” said Sirine Shebaya, senior staff attorney for Muslim Advocates, which represented parents in one of the cases. “And that shot was essentially denied.”

The plaintiffs argued parents couldn’t reasonably participate in credible fear interviews as their children were being forcibly taken from them.

As many as 1,000 parents separated from their children are getting a second chance to stay in the US

This is great news https://www.vox.com/2018/9/13/17853770/children-separated-news-update-parents-trump

The Trump administration has just agreed to give parents who were separated from their children at the US/Mexico border earlier this year a second chance to make asylum claims in the US.

The Department of Justice has negotiated an agreement that covers three lawsuits filed against the government over the family-separation policy. Parents in the US who’d been ordered deported would get another chance to pass an interview demonstrating a “credible fear” of persecution — the first step in the asylum process.

If either the parent or the child passes the screening interview, families will be allowed to apply for asylum together. Some parents who don’t pass will be allowed to remain with their children in the US while the children’s cases are adjudicated.

And in some cases, the government is even willing to consider reopening cases for parents who were already deported from the US.

The agreement covers three lawsuits: Ms. L vs. ICE, which forced the government to reunite separated families this summer; M- M- M- vs. ICE, brought on behalf of children separated from parents; and Dora v. Sessions, a lawsuit from parents who had failed their initial asylum screenings because they were distraught after weeks of separation from their children.
