first stab at a tree list

with the help of the arbor day foundation

my available space is about 5000 sq ft minus about 500 for veggies, although we may be able to work out a deal with the guy in between us and the lot on the use of some of his land.
i picked the dwarves where i could, and presume i can find a suitable replacement for those standards that are on this list. followed their recommendations for pollinators.

3 Hazelnut, Arbor Day Standard

2 Plum, Damson Standard
2 Cherry, Bing Dwarf
1 Cherry, Black Tartarian Dwarf
2 Apricot, Early Golden Standard
1 Apple, Early Harvest Dwarf
1 Apple, Lodi Dwarf
2 Pear, Kieffer Dwarf

also plan to have berries.
prices are very reasonable, and a very helpful site. just starting here tho. so much to learn.

(also posted in farm/rural, cuz i am a wannabee)

northside dfa (chicago)

i am not a real active member of this dfa group, but it is the last one active in chicago. it is a very strong organization, especially when it comes to getting folks down ticket on the ballet, and elected.
posting a couple shots from a photo op in 11/07.
i made political buttons during the bush years. i made on that was a pic of bush, the logos of all the companies that his cabinet worked for when he came into office. the wording was- george bush, brought to you by.... and millionaires everywhere.

so, i later made a button that had howard, surrounded by pennies, nickels and dimes, and computer mice that said- howard dean brought to you by ordinary people.

so, i asked him to sign his button, but snuck one of each in his pocket, telling him he needed them both to get the joke.
earlier this year i was able to meet him again at a dfa fundraiser. i asked him to sign the same button again. we had a chuckle and i had him sign it "hello again".
it is now my double most prized possession.

this is the album. more pics there. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150439127050810.355687.682225809&type=1

a message from rep. jan schakowsky

just came from a holiday fundraiser for jan. this was her message to the jan fans-
we can bitch about the things that obama has done wrong, and we all have something on our lists. but that bitching should be done at midnight, over a bottle of wine, after a long day of talking to voters.
it is time to put our campaign hats on, get to work, and keep focused on what happens if we lose.
we cannot lose.

what kind of chickens should i get?

i actually know that there are quite a few chicken keepers in my neighborhood. the local garden club talked about chickens one month, but i couldn't make it. i know they are out there, tho.

i suppose noise level is a bit of an issue, but have no idea if some chickens are louder than others. they should have spacious enough accommodations. i am thinking half dozen or so.
do plan to eat them at some point. i miss the old stewing hens you used to get when i was a kid.

but at this point about the only chickens i really know about are the ones from the cartoons.

steel buildings

so, i am buying a piece of vacant property, and basically looking to start a "farm".
i need a barn. i want something i can park a couple cars in, but also a little tractor, a giant snow blower, and winter home for chickens. prolly space for a project or 2 here and there.
this is a shoe string kinda thing, as we are maxing our home equity to buy it.
a steel pole barn sort of thing would probably be the most affordable, and likely ok building code wise. but can you get them with enough insulation to make it inhabitable/heatable? and is the design flexible enough for us to do some passive solar/natural light?

pinko puppy on the way.

just sent a check today for a deposit on this little fellow-

he is a victorian bulldogge. bulldog was not my idea, but this type is being bred to undo some of the damage that has been done to the breed in the last 100 years or so.
this is the breeders facebook page-http://www.facebook.com/pages/Southern-Yankee-Bulldogges/105177619520437

he is not ready to come home yet, but will be here about a week before xmas.
