pinko puppy on the way.

just sent a check today for a deposit on this little fellow-

he is a victorian bulldogge. bulldog was not my idea, but this type is being bred to undo some of the damage that has been done to the breed in the last 100 years or so.
this is the breeders facebook page-http://www.facebook.com/pages/Southern-Yankee-Bulldogges/105177619520437

he is not ready to come home yet, but will be here about a week before xmas.

What a good looking pair they are! Dad looks like he should be wearing a hardhat and carrying a lunch pail... what a chest and muscles he's got! I'm really encouraged by their great muscle tone... that means they're actually capable of running and jumping around a lot and given plenty of opportunity to do it. This is what a bulldog should be.

ours will be neutered young, so will not likely be quite that huge, but we are looking into a job training program for ironworker dogs.

you should see the pics of them playing. the breeder has pics of her dogs playing keep away with plastic soda bottles. they are just flying around, ears flapping.

so many idiots out there breeding dogs. so good to see one doing it the right way.

Mostly because who can resist pics of adorable puppies? But I was very glad to see the photos of the adults running and jumping about that the popular crippled bulldogs of today just can't do. It's just wonderful to see a breeder that really cares so much about the health of the breed that they're even willing to change the current crippling standards. I'm hopeful that this breeder will set a new tone for the breed and breeding these much more healthy bulldogs catches on.

I had a chuckle over the plastic bottle... nothing seems more fun to play with for a dog than a cardboard box, a roll of toilet paper and a plastic bottle. My pup gets all excited when he finds a plastic bottle on our walks and proudly carries it all the way home (I guess he thinks the ones he finds himself are extra special).

it was really just one of those facebook things that we found anything about this. i never heard of a victorian bulldogge before.
i finally had convinced DH that he didn't want a bulldog by relaying that the brand new vet at our clinic heartily recommended that we get one, as his student loans were HUGE.
but i can't wait for this bubba to get here.

I'm a firm believer in fate. Now you know for certain that this little furry bundle of love was just meant for you... fate made it happen.

I'm shocked that a vet would recommend a bulldog to anyone... get another vet.

Me thinks the cutie new bundle of love has already been christened... Bubba would be a good name for him.

Counting down the days... they're going unreasonably slowly, aren't they?

he was trying to help me convince DH that he didn't want one. i knew that the student loan thing would be a deadly blow, as we have 5 college age kids matriculating with varying degrees of speed.

we think it will be 'doc'. he is sort of a therapy dog for our youngest (18), who is struggling with depression. we had a break in about a year ago, and she is still anxious at night. so, we are counting on doc to make her feel safe again.

we can't wait, and it is turning into a regular road trip. dad, said kiddo, and her brother, little cesar, all planning to drive down to get him. we all have our fingers crossed for some good weather, as she won't let us come down if it is snowing. some mountain driving between here and there and she wants everyone safe.

do do do do do. here comes the sun. do do do do. here comes the sun.

16. A bit of advice in case this is a new experience for you...

Bring an appropriate sized carrier for the new addition to ride home in if you haven't thought of it already. It's VERY common for a puppy to barf or have an accident on the drive to their new home, and that's not something you want on your car or on the folks in the car especially if it's going to be a long drive.

Puppy will also likely feel more comfortable in a carrier rather than loose in the car. Have a soft blanket for the bottom of the carrier and maybe a nice toy or something he can amuse himself with if he doesn't want to sleep. Try to have relative quiet in the car on the ride home as well since too much noise or comotion is likely to add to the pup's stress.

The breeder shouldn't feed the dog the day it travels home. Far better that puppy doesn't eat until they get to their new home than to barf or poop on the way there.

Glad to hear that the vet was kidding. Phew!

Doc is a really cute name! And it seems very appropriate. Names that are appropriate always seem the best.

I gotta tell ya, I think this is a really awesome idea for your daughter. I've suffered from depression and anxiety pretty much my whole life, and having a pet is an absolute god-send! A dog in particular is really good for this because they're needy... they demand attention not just to have their daily needs taken care of but just because they desperately want your attention. Soooooo many times when I just couldn't face getting out of bed it was ONLY the dog that made me do it and motivated me to deal with the day. I can't even count all the times that the dog (whichever dog it was/is at the time) got me through so many REALLY bad times whether long term or just in the moment. No matter how aweful I may feel every day, the dog is the ONE thing that can get me to laugh, and laughter is the one key medicine for anyone plagued with depression.

Oh, another little trick I learned... having different water than the puppy is accustomed to may make him have some stomach problems until he adjusts. Every area has slightly different water, and it very well can effect a puppy or dog adversely. For the first week or two it's a good idea to give him just a half a tablet of chewable Pepto Bismal once a day. After that week or two his system should be adjusted to the different water. I've also heard that adding a capful of real lemon juice to their water can work just as well, but I don't know myself if it does since I've never tried it.

Also, in case it's something you aren't already aware of... if you're going to feed him some other kind of puppy food than the breeder has been feeding him it's best to gradually introduce the new food with whatever stuff he's been accustomed to to give his system time to adjust even if it means having to buy some of the stuff the breeder was using at first. Same thing for the remainder of the dog's life... gradually introduce new food while tapering off the old to avoid any icky stomach problems or loss of appetite.

I'm so excited for you! And don't worry in the event that your daughter doesn't take much to the dog at first. Depression is really weird in that it seems to make you not care about anything - even really good things. Dogs have a mysterious way of worming themselves into your heart, and I have no doubt that even if she might not seem interested at first this puppy will worm his way into her heart, and before you know it they'll have a cemented special bond. I REALLY REALLY think this is going to help your daughter a lot and you'll start to see some positive changes in her. It will be soooo wonderful for you just to see her smile or laugh and actually be interested and motivated in something, and it's sure to be an enormous dose of good medicine for her. It may not happen right away, but I REALLY REALLY believe that it will happen.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed about the weather and the transfer of the new puppy goes off without a hitch on the big day.

Took my neighbor and her rescued kitty to the vet last week and saw a bulldog with such a severe underbite and squashed nose that she 1)didn't have room for the tongue in her mouth and 2) had to have medication to breathe. Sweet girl, very affectionate but I felt sorry for her. Definitely overbred. Yours is a cutie pie, well proportioned with a great face. Congratulations on your new baby!

not so it interferes with breathing, not so that it interferes eating, stuff like that. good old fashioned bulldog. if you look on her site you will see them running and playing in ways most modern bulls can't do as pups.
very happy. very lucky.

I love how this breeder is breeding healthier bulldogs by getting away from the crippling standards. I hope it catches on.

Oh my goodness, what a cutie he is!

Congrats on the new family member! Bet you're counting the days until he comes home!
