Does anyone have the URL for the gofundme/bridge collapse?

I don't want to start my own page. I just want to contribute to whatever GOFUNDME account is already available.

So often I try to contribute to things, and what I need to see is a big yellow button that says "CONTRIBUTE HERE." At the top.

Is the Washington Post still a quality newspaper?

I have not followed it for years, preferring to use sites like DU to cull through the news from a variety of sources and writers, which include the WP.

I decided to subscribe for a year to the WP, placing emphasis on the political news, but the paper seems so sanitized to me. I had to double check to make sure I hadn't subscribed to the Washington Times. I've done searches in the WP, one topic being General Milley, and the bylines make it sound like Milley was a trouble-maker who deserved to be gone. I can't find anything about Trump calling for his assassination. And now Trump is bashing Milley again.

Sen. Tuberville search results covered when he was holding up military promotions, but nothing about his "satanic cult" description of liberalism.

Is the WP too upper echelon to cover standard RW commentary?

Former Congressman McDermott moved to France as a "safe house" from Trump

"Safe house" may be an exaggeration? But Civrac-en-Médoc near Bordeaux looks quite nice. Who can't relax there?

He must be married to a French national or....? How else does one overcome Schengen law of 90 days unless he lives outside of Schengen countries for 90 days?
***********

Former congressman Jim McDermott moved from retirement in Seattle to a new life in a "safe house" in France, and he's encouraging friends back in the U.S. to consider doing the same.

The Washington State Democrat served 28 years in Congress and 14 years in the state legislature, but the 87-year-old traded a comfortable life in a home overlooking Elliott Bay and the Cascade Mountains for a simpler life in a tiny village near Bordeaux – where he feels strangely at home, reported the Washington Post.

“I relaxed for the first time in years," McDermott said. "My shoulders weren’t all bunched up to my ears.”

MESSAGE TO HUNTER

SUE FOX CORP!

I just ran a MAGA guy out of a cafe without trying

I'm in a Shenandoah Valley diner where you can make chit chat with anyone. I asked a guy near our table who he was rooting for in the Super Bowl. He didn't care. But he quickly changed the subject to politics and to how bad a shape the country was in.

I asked in what way. He said because of all the migrants that were coming in, for one. I asked him why the GOP won't vote for Biden's border bill. "Dave" said it was a bad bill. What's bad about it? He said it was too costly.

I asked, then why doesn't the GOP come up with its own bill? He said because the Dems will not let them.

Then why didn't the GOP create and pass their own bill when they had control of all 3 branches? Dave said the GOP had never controlled all three branches. I said that they had, during the first 2 years of Trump's term, 2016 - 2018. "Do you agree?" He said absolutely not.

I asked him to give me a moment as I looked the info up on my cell. Dave got up, I thought to the toilet, but he'd fled the premises!

Why, if he was so sure??

MSNBC interviewed a caucus organizer

...who said approximately 100 voters had switched parties to repub.

Just then I got an email from an Iowan whose brother in Des Moines had switched his party to GOP so he could vote against Trump. "It won't help but..."

The brother says the process to change parties is moving slowly in Des Moines. I hope the party switch is for the same reason as his. It would be interesting to compare Trump Iowa votes in Nov.

Making such an effort in this weather is inspiring.

While on a MD HWY thru Fredrick, I saw a Trump sign

...on the grassy round-about during rush hour.

It said "LOCK HIM UP! with orange pumpkins in each corner. Wish I could post from my camera.

I'd like to find out where to get those plastic banners so I can do the same in VA. A novel way to keep Trump front/center.

Winchester Star, LTTE, response to Youngkin

While California Governor Gavin Newsom was strengthening his state's economy to that of a country — California is now ranked 4th worldwide ahead of Germany — Virginia's Governor Glenn Youngkin was kept busy inventing a new state slogan: Virginia is for bullies.

Rather than expressing sincere condolences to Speaker Nancy Pelosi after her husband's brutal attack on behalf of all Virginians, Youngkin made a joke of the incident to score political points with constituents. Real classy, Gov'ner. Where did you get that laugh line anyway? From your BFFs, the former President Trump and his puppy dog son Donald Jr. at a Mar-a-Lago sleepover? So, tell us Gov'ner, boxers or briefs?

Biden told everyone to speak out, and we're doing that in VA...

...nearly everyday in the Winchester Star. The titles give a sense of the writers' purpose. If anyone writes non-factual nonsense, they're pelted with facts in a follow-up letter or response. It's nice to see this in the Shenandoah Valley, and being so close to DC, I think these opinions are making the rounds there.

Open Forum: Joe Biden is failing in every way possible

Reading has become more and more upsetting lately under President Biden. Whether it’s my retirement fund statement or the grocery checkout screen or, even more dramatically, the gas pump prices, inflation is everywhere. Just scan some recent headlines in our local papers, “Grim news from Walmart sends U.S. markets lower,” “U.S. home sales fall in June as prices reach new heights,” “Americans filing jobless claims at highest level in 8 months,” “U.S. inflation surges again in June, raising risks for economy,” or “Cost of living crisis to hit women hardest, report says.”

All this began on day one of the Biden administration when he declared war on the American fossil fuel industry. Then he travels to Saudi Arabia this month and begs them to pump and refine more oil thereby further aiding the destruction of our nation’s oil production.

Solution to the soaring inflation issue is simple according to Biden’s Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg: “Buy an electric vehicle.” Apparently easier said than done as these vehicles average around 50 grand apiece. What in Buttigieg’s background promoted him to this high a position in Biden’s team? Perhaps he knows as much regarding transportation as Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm knows about our oil industry. In November of last year, while representing America abroad, she laughed out loud when asked how the Biden team planned to increase our oil output.

Closing pipelines and cutting back on drilling permits among other measures has sent a chilling message to the American fossil fuel industry. While there is no doubt that in the future, we will be using more and more electric vehicles, that time is not here yet. Sadly, President Biden is being held captive by the far-left members of his party.

The oil issue is central to the total inflation problem. High fuel prices, supply chain issues — tried to purchase tampons, baby formula or peanut butter lately? — and raw material shortage, or increasing rates to move these products along, are all dependent on fossil fuel being available at reasonable prices.

In the past week the White House was delighted to point out the recent drop of 25-30 cents a gallon at the pump. Apparently, the good news is that gas is now only two bucks more than the day he took office.

Guess the White House press secretary didn’t read this headline from The Star: “Gas prices may surge again ahead of midterm elections.”

President Biden has done a failing job in every major issue facing the nation. Soaring inflation, unchecked Southern border invasion, fentanyl pouring into our cities and causing record-setting death rates and crime running uncontrolled across the country.

Truly, Mr. Biden you have failed us badly. Don’t believe me? Just read the headlines.

No offense but the Star is a local publication- the Star is not the NY Times, the Washington Post or the Chicago Tribune- in the midst of your rant, did you seriously think that Biden’s press secretary would be reading the front page headline of the Star? Hopefully this isn’t your only source of national and international news!

Most importantly, the Biden administration has not been synonymous with "corruption" nor has he attempted a coup to overthrow the elected government and substitute a treasonous autocracy.

Inflation is a worldwide phenomenon. In fact, our economy is doing better than other world economies. With respect to inflation, the numbers are from June. We know that in July gas prices came down and the cost of raw materials and shipping also went down. Some of the supply chain issues seem to be better. The July inflation numbers will come out in early August. We’ll see where they are. The rate hikes by the Federal Reserve are also dampening demand. Inflation gets out of control when the public has an expectation that it will continue into well into the future. Most polls show that the vast majority think this is a short term problem that will sort itself out. Home prices and rents were going up also under President Biden’s predecessor. These prices are determined by supply and demand. A case could be made that the Fed kept interest rates artificially low. The Fed isn’t in the executive branch so President Biden couldn’t force them to raise rates. Myself, I don’t think the Fed wanted to stymie growth in the middle of a pandemic. As folks got out more, pent up demand went up and because of supply chain issues supply was down. That increased prices. The Fed was hoping the supply chain issues would sort themselves out in the near term; It didn’t happen as fast as they were hoping; the consequences of that is that the Fed didn’t raise rates as quickly as they should have. President Biden does bare some responsibility for not means testing the pandemic relief funds. A lot of folks lost their job and needed these checks. A lot of small businesses needed help. They got this relief out quickly without enough oversight. I hope they can recover money from those businesses that made fraudulent claims. These funds were inflationary but needed. Oil is set on the international market. During the pandemic people were driving less and less supply was needed. Many wells were capped and small producers went out of business. Workers left the industry. There have been new wells drilled and some existing wells opened back up. This doesn’t happen over night and supplies are going up. Even under President Biden’s predecessor there was disinvestment in the fossil fuel industry. Many of the car manufacturers have made the commitment of all electric fleets in 15 years. Many energy companies are diversifying into alternative energy because they see the writing on the wall. Fossil fuels are a finite resource that creates havoc on our climate and the air we breathe. Some folks want to keep their heads in the sand and pretend that isn’t the case. As far as folk’s IRA’s or 401Ks, things will come back. Unless they did something short sighted like going to a cash position, they will be fine. For younger folks, now is the time for income averaging. If you’re doing you’re periodic investment, the plans are buying stocks at a cheaper price. Once the market comes back, you’ll experience a multiplier effect on your portfolio. A lot of folks, including myself, experienced this after we recovered from the 2008 downturn.

Very true. Biden is the worst so-called President in my lifetime. BUT, just wait until the resident progressives read this. Somehow, they all think Joe is doing great job!

Historically high corporate profits are a primary catalyst for creeping inflation; Biden's 15% windfall profit corporate tax proposal is right on target to address this egregious anomaly. While America is the world's top producer of fossil fuels, the industry is reeling from the pandemic but nonetheless Forbes reports an increase in drilling operations by 60%. Remember, this takes time!

Biden's accomplishments include a 1.2 Trillion infrastructure package that The Former Guy only talked about but Joe actually delivered. Covid relief helped thousands of families get through the worst days of the pandemic when their financial status lay in ruins. Biden championed a Covid vaccination program that brought the vaccination rate for Americans from 1% to a strong majority of citizens.

Biden reinstated the moratorium on federal executions and achieved historic reductions in unemployment, creating 6 million jobs. His appointments of federal judges reflect his support of women & minorities and he has been a staunch supporter of LGBTQ rights. And he has taken America from acting like a Russian sympathizer to a strong ally and supporter of Ukrainian independence and autonomy.

Perhaps most of all, Joe Biden has taken a rational and insightful approach to climate change. With greenhouse gases at the highest levels in 8,000 CENTURIES Joe Biden has supported the programs this nation needs to lead the way to a new era of environmental consciousness and morality.

There is a limit to what a President can do. Our southern border will remain a boiling crisis for generations. Problems like homelessness and drug addition are a challenge in a free society. Countries with central planning and authoritarianism have always failed to provide daily needs like peanut butter and tampons. But the policies of Biden and progressive Americans are on the right track to restore America to it's historical position of leadership in the free world.

Dear Brian: In case you missed it, there is an ongoing global pandemic called Covid 19, which the world is still trying to get out from under. Over the past 2 years the world has experienced shortages because of supply-chain issues, labor, etc. The world is trying to get a handle on this. It takes time. Yes, it's awful. No peanut butter you say? Some people don't have anything. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps sonny and do something except whine. You're not alone, the whole world is with us.

I know Republicans hate to give up this hobby horse, but in the real world, gas prices have been falling for six consecutive weeks. Meanwhile, President Biden is doing a great job. When he took over, schools were closed, people were out of work, businesses were closed, COVID was killing thousands of Americans, and our beautiful Capitol had just been trashed by former President Trump's insurrectionist thugs. Today, schools are open, people are back to work at higher wages, businesses are open and hiring, COVID deaths are down, and the Capitol has been repaired. President Biden has been paying down the Trump deficit. CBS recently noted that, "the government will pay down the national debt this quarter for the first time in six years. . . . Besides the quarterly reduction in the national debt, the Treasury Department estimates that this fiscal year's budget deficit will decline $1.5 trillion. That decrease marks an improvement from initial forecasts and would likely put the annual deficit below $1.3 trillion." President Biden passed the Infrastructure Act that Trump kept promising, but couldn't deliver. The list goes on and on. The doom-and-gloom crowd may not like it, but America is back and President Biden's leadership has been a major part of that.

The only "amusement" we've gotten from this administration in the past two years has been watching the White House, as gas prices shot thru the roof, say the president doesn't control gas prices. Then, in recent weeks, we've seen them do a complete 180 as gas prices have fallen a whopping 30 cents, say joe biden's polices have brought gas prices down. They really think we're that stupid.

Unlike Trump, Biden has chosen extremely talented and capable people for his cabinet. Trump chose people who tried to undermine the position for which they were sworn to protect, the USPS, EPA, and public schools are first to come to mind. We still have remnants of that failed post-Trump presidency per his sycophant followers out to make a buck with no thought to helping people they serve. Look at Virginia's governor. Glenn Youngkin has no political experience, same as Trump, and no ability to compromise, also like Trump. If Youngkin doesn't get his way, he has a hissy-fit, like Trump, and sets about to overturn bipartisan bills already passed into law. That's a lot of taxpayer money spent for nothing, which before had been something e.g. 25 laws that were established to protect VA citizens. Trump is responsible for over one million dead Americans from COVID because he threw away the Obama/Biden playbook once entering office. Trump was impeached twice and is about to be arrested for any number of complaints, to include attempting to overthrow democracy and worsening divisions within the US. Biden inherited that mess, just as Obama had inherited W's mess of a horrible economy, two wars, and the sacking of two World Trade Towers because W had ignored "Osama determined to attack the US." (Well, heck, he was on vacation!)

Prices are higher, though gas prices are going down, because of a pandemic, which has affected supply/demand WORLD WIDE. Biden doesn't have a magic wand, but he does have an intelligent staff who know what they are doing, so cool your jets. I'm surprised your not upset about the GOP Senate voting against medical benefits for our military's burn pit victims. Save your rage for Mitch McConnell, Ted Cruz, and Steve Gaines for their fist bump celebration after blocking veterans' PACT Act.
