Supreme Court refuses to consider whether Second Amendment protects gun silencers

Supreme Court refuses to consider whether Second Amendment protects gun silencers

The Supreme Court refused Monday to decide if the Second Amendment protects gun silencers such as the one used in last month's Virginia Beach shooting that killed 12 people.

Without comment or dissent, the justices turned away petitions from the operator of a Kansas army-surplus store and one of his customers who purchased an unregistered silencer in violation of federal law.

Two lower federal courts previously ruled that gun silencers fall outside the scope of the  Second Amendment because they are accessories not in common use by law-abiding citizens.

The Trump administration had urged the Supreme Court not to hear the challenge. Solicitor General Noel Francisco wrote that the Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear "arms," and that restrictions on silencers don't burden the ability to use a gun for self-defense.

Odd that the administration did not want SCOTUS to take this up.

Suspect accused of throwing boy from balcony at MOA pleads guilty to attempted murder

Suspect accused of throwing boy from balcony at MOA pleads guilty to attempted murder

The Minneapolis man accused of throwing a 5-year-old boy from a third-floor balcony at Mall of America last month has pleaded guilty to attempted premeditated first-degree murder.

Emmanuel Aranda, 24, entered his plea Tuesday morning in Hennepin County court, admitting he knew throwing a child over a third-floor balcony could kill him.

"I think that you saw in there him accepting full responsibility for what happened," said Paul Sellers, Hennepin County public defender.

A family spokesperson has said the boy is now out of critical condition, and is alert and conscious. The family hopes he will be able to return home by June.

Texas police officer shot and killed a woman during arrest attempt

Texas police officer shot and killed a woman during arrest attempt

(CNN) — A shaky cell phone video captured the moments before a Texas police officer shot and killed a woman who claimed she was pregnant.

Now people on social media are divided over whether the shooting was justified.

The officer was patrolling an apartment complex in the Houston suburb of Baytown late Monday when he saw a woman he knew from previous encounters, Baytown police said.

A family member identified the woman as Pamela Shantay Turner. In a text message Tuesday, police Lt. Steve Dorris said Turner was not pregnant.

There was a lot of discussion about the officer who shot the teen with a knife. In the case the woman the officer was attempting to arrest got control of his taser, an item that was suggested to be used in the other case. Do people think shooting was justified in this case?

Concerned parent describes 'pressure-cooker' environment at site of Colorado school shooting

Source: CNN

(CNN) — One of the first things she noticed was that her child, and other students at STEM School Highlands Ranch, weren't getting enough sleep. The academic workload, she said, seemed crushing. The parent noticed kids stressing out, and lashing out. She said she heard reports of violence, sexual assault and bullying. Yet school officials, she said, seemed to be ignoring the mounting problems.

When she finally picked up the phone to talk to a county school board member in December, she said she was worried that a "perfect storm" was brewing "for something like a Columbine" shooting.

The woman's concerns were detailed in a CNN story this week following a shooting at the suburban Denver school that left one student dead and eight others injured. The mother, who showed CNN evidence of her affiliation with the school but asked not to be identified out of fear of retaliation against her or her child, gave an interview Thursday expanding on her worries about the "pressure-cooker" environment on campus.

"When you don't listen to parents' concerns, when you don't support teachers' concerns, when you don't give teachers the kind of training that they need or the support that they need ... those are the elements that we need for the perfect storm, for something like a Columbine, or some kind of imminent threat to our children's safety in the school, whether it be a bomb or an active shooter, or a suicide," she said in the interview.
Following the parent's call to the school board in December, a district official urged the school's executive director to investigate the allegations to determine whether the parent's fears were founded and whether any action needed to be taken.

The PR firm says the school sent a confidential mail that no parent replied to. I wonder if any parents can verify that and if confidential also meant anonymous. Given the hardline stance the school seems to have with those who complain it would be understandable no one would be willing to reply to such a letter.

STEM School was urged to investigate concerns over 'a repeat of Columbine' months before shooting

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – A woman claiming to be a parent of a STEM School student warned school district administrators in December about what she described as rampant bullying, drug use and her fears of a “a repeat of Columbine” at the semi-autonomous charter school.

The anonymous complaints alarmed authorities enough that they requested an investigation by police and school officials.

It’s not yet clear whether there’s any connection between the woman’s complaints and the Tuesday attack at the school that killed one student and injured eight others. Two students accused in the attack remain jailed and are expected to be formally charged Friday.

As a charter school, the STEM School is largely exempt from the rules and policies governing neighboring public schools, although it is still accountable to the district via a legal agreement.

'Still alive!': Notre Dame's 180,000 bees survive cathedral fire

'Still alive!': Notre Dame's 180,000 bees survive cathedral fire

Notre Dame Cathedral's bees, kept in hives on the historic church's roof, survived the fire earlier this week, the beekeeper says.

"I am so relieved. I saw satellite photos that showed the three hives didn’t burn. I thought they had gone with the cathedral," beekeeper Nicolas Geant told the Associated Press on Friday.

The 180,000 bees live in three hives on Notre Dame's roof as part of an effort since 2013 to help prevent bee die-off.

"I got a call from Andre Finot, the spokesman for Notre Dame, who said there were bees flying in and out of the hives which means they are still alive!" Geant told CNN.

GOP congressman quotes Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' to slam Trump's adversaries as liars

GOP congressman quotes Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf’ to slam Trump’s adversaries as liars

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) took to the House floor on Monday to portray President Trump’s detractors as Nazis but ended up slurring them using an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory drawn verbatim from Adolf Hitler’s writings.

It’s 2019, and the Führer’s magnum opus, “Mein Kampf,” has become a playbook for political combat in Congress, at the very moment that Trump is calling the Democrats “anti-Jewish. ”

Brooks, a five-term Republican, accused Democrats and members of the media of propagating a “big lie” about collusion. The expression was coined by Hitler to describe how Jews used their “unqualified capacity for falsehood” to blame a top German military commander for the country’s losses in World War I. A lie could be so big, Hitler claimed, that it perversely defied disbelief.

It was unclear if Brooks grasped that by leveling charges of the “big lie,” he had inverted his own analogy, making Democrats the equivalent of interwar German and Austrian Jews. He set out to compare the other side to fascists, but he was the one employing a fascist smear — one that, ironically, came to define Nazi propaganda.
