Stevenson community in shock following Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

As a young girl growing up in Baltimore City, Yolanda Peace remembers Sundays when she climbed into the backseat of her family car for a trip over the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

“I remember always on Sundays, my father would have to take my mother to work, and we would be in the car as kids just in awe looking at all the water,” said Peace, who works in food services at Stevenson. “We had never seen it. I was a city girl, born and raised. It was just exciting for us on Sunday to go across that bridge.”

Her mother, aunts, and uncles worked at Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point in Baltimore. It closed in 2012, replaced by Under Armour’s international headquarters and other warehouse distribution centers.

On Tuesday morning around 1:30 a.m., the Key Bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River after a support was struck by a large container shipping vessel. Peace had to tell her mother about the tragedy that has taken the lives at least two of eight construction workers who were filling potholes on the bridge at the time of the collapse.

An Obama should run in 2024

I mean, if the constitution isn't a hindrance to an insurrectionist earning his party's nomination, why shouldn't an Obama run against him?

If the 14th Amendment doesn't matter, then we can ignore the 22nd Amendment, the one that stops Barack Obama from running.

if the 14th Amendment doesn't matter, then we can ignore Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 that prevents 25-year-old Malia Obama from running.

Teens Tuning In: New Medill survey shows higher-than-expected news engagement among young people

Excerpted paragraphs:

An oft-cited factor in the continued struggles of traditional news outlets has been the sense that young people are disengaged from the news. But the News Socialization Study, a new survey commissioned by the Medill School at Northwestern University, reveals that teenagers may be keeping up with current events more than previously thought.

“The survey found more engagement with news among teens than we were expecting,” says Stephanie Edgerly, professor and Associate Dean for Research at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications. Edgerly oversaw the survey, which was conducted by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago. “We found that 29% of teens said they encounter news daily. That’s encouraging.”

---

Older teens (16 to 17 years old) showed slightly higher engagement levels than younger teens (13 to 15 years old). This finding may seem logical given that the college application process and eligibility to vote may trigger increased interest in national events.

More surprising may be the relatively robust consumption of local and network TV news among teens. The survey found that 46% of teens saw local TV news daily or weekly, while 42% encountered national network TV news daily or weekly. The numbers were lower for cable, sports and entertainment news as well as for news-related satire/comedy shows.

Did Drumpf just violate the terms of his release?

He "Truthed": IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I'M COMING AFTER YOU."

Andrew Feinberg, the WH correspondent for the Independent (UK), writes: "This certainly sounds like a threat against prosecutors and/or witnesses."

What makes a social studies textbook "woke" in Ron DeSantis' Florida

Source: Popular Info

Popular Information discovered, however, that the Florida Department of Education has quietly posted the initial reviews of all currently approved social studies textbooks — including those that were initially rejected. These reviews, which have not been previously reported, reveal why these social studies textbooks were deemed unacceptable.

---

One of the initially rejected textbooks for 1st Grade was Social Studies Alive! My School and Family, published by the Teachers' Curriculum Institute (TCI). One reviewer of Social Studies Alive! My School and Family determined that the textbook was in "very poor/no alignment" with the provision of Florida law that prohibits "any instruction regarding sexual orientation or gender identity." The reviewer does not claim there is any instruction in the text about sexual orientation or gender identity. But the reviewer notes that the textbook's "photographs and graphics include homosexual and heterosexual couples." The reviewer also claimed that the photos of "non-traditional families" violates the Florida requirement that the material be presented "objectively" and is "free of bias."

---

Another initially rejected textbook for 6th-8th grade was Civics Alive! Foundations and Functions, also published by TCI. One reviewer who did not recommend the text claims that "the discussion of lesbianism… [is] inappropriate for the middle school classroom." This is the entire "discussion of lesbianism" within the textbook:

LGBTQ candidates have also made some headway gaining governmental positions. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin became the first lesbian elected to the Senate in 2012… In 2021, the New York Times noted there were 986 LGBTQ elected officials across both the federal government and state governments.

---

One middle school social studies textbook, Florida United States History Advanced: myWorld Interactive, was not rejected by the state but did have several issues flagged by a reviewer. For example, the reviewer writes that "Slavery image on pg. 444 may violate the statute relating to guilt of future generations." This is a reference to the Stop WOKE Act, which prohibits instruction that makes an individual "feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress for actions, in which he or she played no part, committed in the past by other members of the same race."

There are several examples at the link, including images and captions for images that have been flagged by Florida reviewers.

Soon, a Florida education will be worthless. I write this, sadly, as a graduate of the University of Florida.

John Durham Just Made False Statements to Congress

Source: Mother Jones

John Durham—the special counsel who was appointed by then-Attorney General Bill Barr to investigate the FBI’s investigation of the Trump-Russia scandal and who utterly failed to produce evidence it was a hoax—testified before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. In doing so, he made false statements to Congress. He might even have lied.

Durham spent four years on a crusade that Donald Trump and others hoped would back up Trump’s claim that the Russia investigation was cooked up by his enemies within the supposed Deep State. Yet Durham came up empty on this front, losing two jury trials unrelated to the origins of the FBI’s inquiry and winning a guilty plea from an FBI lawyer who had altered an email to support a surveillance warrant for a former Trump campaign adviser. He prosecuted no FBI officials or Obama administration officials for the supposedly big crime of mounting a plot (or witch hunt!) against Trump. Durham even concluded there was justification for the FBI to have initiated a preliminary investigation, just not a full investigation, of Russia’s attack on the 2016 election and contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia.

When Durham came before the committee, House Republicans eagerly picked over the scraps in his final report, which has been much criticized, and they treated him as a hero. But under questioning from Democratic and Republican members, Durham misrepresented key aspects of the Russia scandal, suggesting he was either unfamiliar with basic facts or was purposefully trying to mislead the committee and the American public.

During his turn to question Durham, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) asked Durham about the infamous meeting held in Trump Tower on June 9, 2016, when Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort—three of Trump’s top campaign advisers—sat down with an emissary of the Russian government whom they were told had dirt on Hillary Clinton to share. An email sent to Trump Jr. from a business associate that set up this session informed the candidate’s son that this meeting was part of a secret Russian scheme to help Trump’s campaign. Durham dismissed the matter, remarking, “People get phone calls all the time from individuals who claim to have information like that.”

"In less than 24 hours ..."

Nicolle Wallace opened the 4:30 p.m. ET segment of "Deadline: White House" with this lead-in:

"In less than 24 hours, the disgraced, twice-impeached, twice-indicted former president will be arraigned in federal court in Miami."

Shocking, right?

Thinking back to Jan. 20, 2017, and listening to Trump's inaugural address and then to Sean Spicer's press conference after, I'm not shocked at all. Not really all that surprised either.

We knew you had it in you, Donnie!

Isn't it delicious?

As someone who has dedicated my life to the practice and instruction of journalism, I've opined — both privately and publicly, in person and in a blog — that the greatest threat to our democratic republic has been Trump's constant lying.

So isn't it delicious that one of the crimes he's been accused of is literally called "Making False Statements"?

Breakfast tastes so good today.

Robertson moldering. Trump charged, again.
