"Monica and 42 other former assistant numeraries from Latin America accused Opus Dei of enslavement in Argentina"

The Opus Dei diaries - How girls around the world were coerced into decades of gruelling service to the secretive Catholic group.

Interesting article that points to job #1 in organized religion - control and exploit women.

Teena had been miserable ever since she whistled. Shortly afterwards, Montero, her glamorous confidante, ceased to acknowledge her. The older woman passed by placidly in the corridors, her former care and attention haunting Teena like a living ghost. All she had done was give Teena a cilice, a barbed metal chain she was to tie around her thigh for two hours every day, and a discipline, a rope whip with knotted ends she was to use on her back when she prayed the Hail Mary.

Mortifications are part of Opus Dei’s daily spiritual plan, and they aren’t limited to the flesh. Asceticism is a way to imitate Christ’s life, to take up the cross with him. Teena was encouraged to offer up her suffering, however small or temporary, to God: sitting in an uncomfortable position, denying herself food she liked.

The girl had stopped eating. She buckled her uniform’s belt one notch tighter each month, until there were none left. She longed for the fields in Ballyroan. But when she wrote letters to her family she didn’t know what she could say. The numeraries read everything she sent or received — to protect her, they said, from immoral thoughts.

Hitchhiking to Nashville With Titus (barefoot off-grid evangelist)

I'm an atheist, but found this story fascinating (after a couple of gummies).
Interesting video about a barefoot, straw hat-wearing preacher, hitchhiking from his hometown to Nashville, to spread his message.
Titus is off-the-grid and has no form of ID, which makes for interesting interactions with the authorities.
His traveling partner is a youtuber with some weird ideas about government creating division among the populace, but I look beyond that weirdness.
During the Kentucky leg of the trip the drivers who pick them up, tend to have the old " 'Murica is on the wrong track" idea, but it's an interesting peek into their mindset.

"The Art of Life" - the art of living outside of conventions, in deep integrity with one's essence.

Amazing story of a man who caught a glimpse of beauty and had the courage to pursue it.

As a rising star in the field of abstract mathematics, Michael discovered that he could see beauty and pattern where others could not. But his path was not to be inside academia, or even inside society. He went on a grand adventure to unify his Buddhism with his ability to see an expanded view of reality. He created beauty in a place where nobody else would, and made his friends amongst dolphins.

Data mining shifts to high gear at Twitter?

Anyone else notice a massive uptick in questions that seems designed to tease-out your demographic profile?
How old were you when (insert movie name here) came out?
Did you ever see Jaws as a first run movie a the theater?
Are you old enough to have used cassette tapes for music?
Lists of items you've done/eaten/used?
What food is your city/state best known for?

Seems like it's gone wild since the first of the year.
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they're not mining data. (lol).

Dave Wasserman of Cook Political report - is calling the GA election

I've seen enough: Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) defeats Herschel Walker (R) in the #GASEN runoff, giving Democrats a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

I've been following a youtube channel and they just finished sailing around the world in a 54' boat.

I've watched numerous episodes from their 10+ year circumnavigation and found them to be liberal anti-trumpers and cannabis enthusiasts, so I was hooked from the start.
Here's the episode announcing they've completed the loop.

Arrest made after vandalism at Lake in the Hills’ UpRising Bakery and Cafe that led to cancelation of much-anticipated drag show

A suspect has been arrested after a bakery in the village of Lake in the Hills was vandalized, which led to the cancellation of a much-anticipated, family-friendly drag show set to take place at the bakery Saturday, according to a Lake in the Hills Police Department Facebook post.

“Regarding the vandalism to UpRising Bakery and Cafe,” the police department wrote on Facebook. “The suspect has been arrested. More information to follow.”

UpRising Bakery and Cafe was hosting a “Starry Night Brunch Drag” show at the store beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, according to Facebook. The event, which was sold out, was advertised as a family-friendly evening filled with food and entertainment.

Plus another area business found out the PB's were planning some awful stuff as well, posting this on social media.

ETTD - Everything Trump Touches Dies

By most accounts we are in the midst of a real estate boom (bubble sounds more like it), but those who live in a Trump-branded property may be suffering from the stigma of his name and brand.

https://www.chicagotribune.com/real-estate/elite-street/ct-re-elite-street-exelon-christopher-crone-trump-tower-20220527-gpv4gajjtjcf3f2uhz2rx43gta-story.html

Christopher M. Crane, the president and CEO of Chicago-based Exelon Corp., on Thursday took a loss on his two-bedroom, 2,063-square-foot condominium on the 39th floor of the Trump International Hotel & Tower, selling it for $1.32 million.
Crane paid $2.05 million in 2015 for the condo unit, meaning that he lost $725,000 on it over seven years.

Crane first listed the condo in 2016 for $2.09 million, but took it off the market the following year. He relisted it in late April for $1.7 million, and he went under contract just five days later.
