12. I understand an anti-military proclivity, but I also know that the basis upon which I claim

that right to be against War, because it IS my personal right, morally and in all other regards to make that determination, MUST yield that same right to free determination to those who make it fully informed, honestly, and, hence, FREE, (3 BIG criteria there), though differently from mine, themselves.

I wish it were otherwise; I wish I could just deliver absolutes, but I KNOW I cannot, so I have to let others do their best in that regard too, as long as it is as fully informed as possible, honest, and, hence, as FREE a determination of one's best approximation of the "truth" as possible under the given set of circumstances.

Those are pretty high standards, though, don't you think: Best, Fully Informed, Honest, Free, Truth . . . perhaps a commitment to that effort, and its attendant responsible accountability, will get us at least close to what we very obviously NEED.

8. One of the side-effects of a volunteer military

Unfortunately, I think one of the side-effects of an all-volunteer military is that most people don't care about war anymore.

I saw a note on a dry-erase board in a photo of some base overseas. It said, "The United States Marines are at war. America is at the mall."

It's true.

If people from all walks of life were being randomly cut down by these imperialistic wars, there would be outrage, like there was over Vietnam. But now, the people who volunteer for it are all for it, and the people who don't volunteer are largely unaffected by it.

I'm not a big fan of compulsory military service, but maybe we'd fight less wars if everyone had their lives at stake over it.
