Woman Who Attempted Suicide While Pregnant is Accused of Murder
Source: The Guardian

A woman accused of murdering her four-day-old baby girl by trying to kill herself with rat poison while pregnant has become a cause célèbre for US women's groups and civil liberties organisations.

Bei Bei Shuai, 34, a restaurant owner who moved to the US from China 10 years ago, was pregnant and planning to marry her boyfriend until she learned late last year that he was already married and he would be abandoning her.

A few days later, on 23 December, she went to a hardware store, bought rat poison pellets, went back to her flat in Indianapolis and swallowed some. But she did not die immediately and was persuaded by friends to go to hospital.

(snip)

But in March she was arrested and charged with murder and attempted foeticide. She now faces life imprisonment.

2. This is such total bullshit
It's just a patriarchal DA who's trying to polish his halo and make a big name for himself among the fundamentalist crowd.

This poor gal needs psychotherapy, not some idiot attacking her for seeing no way out but suicide.

9. Your sentiment I agree with, however
Have there been 2 murder charges when the victim(s) were a pregnant woman? I may just be juxtaposing episodes of Law and Order, but if it is true how is this different?

6. Caffeine,nicotine,and alcohol are no-nos while pregnant-----if a baby
died 4 days after birth would a mother who used those products be up on murder charges?

This is total,utter madness.

10. Oh jeeze. Watch this case, it may be used as a stepping stone
They'll try to take this all the way to the USSC to challenge Roe v Wade.

This prosecutor is a "true believer"

12. No, you already walked across the stepping stone without realizing it.

He was convicted of two counts of murder.

They won't miss too many more.

Unlike Democrats, Repubs learn quickly and change tactics just as quickly.

14. No, they didn't miss the chance at all. They jumped all over it.
Scott Peterson was convicted of murdering a fetus. You can't murder anything other than a person. Opening pandora's box may have seemed like a good idea at the time, but it wasn't.

16. They could have taken it further

But court challenges are really a matter of how far a DA's office is willing to take it.

Citizen's United didn't need to go the Supreme Court. It was a simple case with easy precedents. But it was used as a vehicle for a pre-ordained verdict.

15. What the hell?
WHY do Repukes worship fetuses so much? This poor woman has been through enough. What she needs is help, not prison time. This makes me so angry and I wish there were something I could do to help this poor woman. It's really sad when a fetus is more important than a fully grown, mentally ill, adult woman. Sad, sad, sad.
