Wisconsin Dems file 30,000 signatures to recall Kapanke, twice what's needed

At roughly 4pm central time today, Wisconsin Democrats formally filed the recall petition against Republican state Senator Dan Kapanke. They ended up filing 30,000 signatures, roughly twice the 15,588 required.

Dan Kapanke received 45,154 votes in the 2008 election (PDF, page 16). Given that turnout in the recall election will be significantly lower than in a Presidential election, 30,000 may actually be enough votes to defeat him.

When I heard this morning that the recall petitions were going to be turned in I admit that I was a little nervous because I knew that many of them would be challenged. It turns out that the people who hit the ground to gather signatures accomplished something amazing, they got double the number of signatures needed in only half the time that they were given to gather those signatures. The Republicans have to be terrified today.

7. I helped with those signatures. We tried hard to make

sure they were valid. Many folks recognized the need for validity and voluntarily pulled out their ID's. Our group never asked for any IDs (wanted you to know that).
