Neighbor tapes so called dog rescuer 'disciplining' a dog for digging a hole
ALLEGED ABUSE: Police say video shows Ottumwa woman abusing dogs
Warning: Video may be disturbing to some

An Ottumwa woman who claims she is rescuing neglected animals is now facing a charge of animal cruelty. Ottumwa police arrested 41 year-old Noelle Stanbridge Tuesday after they say a concerned citizen turned in a disturbing video.

"Its shocking," said Ottumwa Animal Control Officer Jeff Williams. "Yes people discipline their dogs for digging a hole or something, but this is absolutely in no way discipline. This is complete abuse," he said.

Shot from a near-by window about ten days ago, the video shows Stanbridge in her back yard with several dogs. First she pulls a black dog out of its kennel and strikes it with a long object before taking it inside. A few minutes later she returns and heads for another dog, grabbing it by the legs and dragging it to a hole. Police say she strikes the animal approximately 15 times.

2. That's no rescuer.
I didn't watch the video, but if what's posted is true, I'm glad she was captured performing this sort of abuse. Get patience or get out of the rescue biz.

4. I watched it. It is bad. A dog's legs cannot be dragged like that
without risking breaking them. The dogs she was abusing were struggling and frightened. I wanted to beat that woman bloody myself!

5. I am a rescuer.
A liberator, even. Hands pet, hands feed. Hands never hit.

14. I am a rescuer, also. Kudos to you.
And there are lots of other ways to discipline than this horrendous woman does.

6. I'm sorry for the dogs, terribly so
but grateful that someone cared enough to bring this forward. I can't watch it either, have seen too much stuff lately here and on FB about abused animals. I don't rescue dogs, but I donate what I can. That someone took action before it was too late -- that's very commendable.

7. I 'drag' my dog... (nominally) but it is NOTHING like what this horrible person is doing.

First of all, I have a dog that loves to be touched, rubbed, scratched, massaged, stretched and pulled. I know. Its weird. There is no dispute that he likes any/all of it... if there was, I wouldn't do it. He squirms, wags his tail in circles and begs for more... I've never known a dog that was so enthusiastic with any and all physical interaction. I can separate his toes, check out his mouth, brush his hind quarters... pull cactus spines out of any part of him... he loves being touched and scratched anywhere. He has zero sensitivity. Being that I rescued him from the E-list (old, black lab mix) I'm awed that he has nothing but total trust and love...

I rarely pull him, but when I do it's for a few inches and he is ecstatic the entire time. He lies on his back, plays "patty-cake" to get me to grab his front paws. I'll pull on his paws (he's upside down) and he asks for it again. He's old, so I don't push it. I've 'pulled' him fewer than 5-7 times in 3-4 years. The total distance, if added up would amount to a few feet. Obviously, I see that my dog likes the sensation but I'm a cautious and careful owner and just because he likes something doesn't mean its good for him (like the whole chicken he scarfed up when someone ELSE left it out... bones and all. Vet determined all was fine)

What this woman is doing is not only cruel, it's also inordinately stupid and fully ineffective. Tough love NEVER works with dogs (or children, or anyone in my view). The only way to correct behaviour you don't want is to reward good actions - ignore and/or re-direct bad/undesirable actions.

Dogs will always fail when 'punished'. So will children and people in general I believe. Punishment used as corrective force (which is VERY different from appropriate and undesirable consequences....) is always bad, always creepy and always ineffective.

This woman is injuring these dogs psychologically far more than physically (at least from the video). There is no excuse for doing that to a dog. Ever.

10. Perhaps this woman needs
"rescuing". I have a neighbor who I suspect has a form of Munchausen by proxy syndrome, only with her pets. She is constantly taking them to the vet for many different reasons. There is no solid proof of what I suggest but it certainly makes me go hmmmm.

13. What are the laws of videoing your neighbor in their yard if it involves
something illegal?

15. My neighbor would video me bringing dogs to my house
off of the truck from the south, where they were going to be killed. The police said I had no recourse, even when the lunatic would film my underage daughter walking the rescue dogs. He was trying to "prove I had a kennel" in my house, which I didn't.
