Gov. Jerry Brown ends budget talks with Republicans
Brown: Budget Talks End
March 29, 2011 6:05 PM

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) —

snip...
Brown issued a statement saying he had halted talks days after GOP leaders released a list of 53 demands they said had to be met in exchange for their support for a special election.

The Democratic governor and majority Democrats wanted to ask California voters in June to extend temporary tax increases enacted two years ago as part of their solution to close the deficit.

Brown said he supports some of the reforms sought by Republican lawmakers, including a state spending cap, changes to the pension system for public employees and streamlining business regulations.

But he said after progress was made on those issues, the Republicans issued a much longer wish list that included items not related to the state budget debate and corporate tax breaks that would cost the state billions of dollars a year. The governor concluded that further talks would be fruitless.

2. Now What Happens?
People really need to teach the repubs a lesson, but unless they redistrict and get rid of the safe seats I doubt that will happen.

4. How can he call their bluff?
He needed their votes to put the referendum on the ballot. He can't do it by himself.

6. There is also the timeline issue
With a vote that needs repuke support, it could have made the June ballot. At this point the best that can be done is the fall general election. The delay will make the financial issues that much worse this year and conventional wisdom is that it will be more of a challenge to get them past.

8. He is going to talk to Republican voters directly and pressure the
legislators in that way. I wonder if we could start recall campaigns on any of the weak seats?

7. He is going to go directly to voters and bypass the Republican politicos.
Great. I think that Brown's ideas will appeal to ordinary Republicans.

9. Hold daily 5pm news briefs in the TV station lots Jerry!
Ram it down their throats like they do to us everyday. Showing the media for what they are sure sounds good too if they willfully ignore covering real issues.
