What happens in Fukushima does not stay in Fukushima

funny title for a serious topic

Japan Radiation Hits Las Vegas

What happens in Fukushima does not stay in Fukushima at all

(Newser) – The amounts are tiny, but radiation from Japan's crippled nuclear plant has reached all the way to Las Vegas, reports the AP. Minuscule amounts of iodine-131 and xenon-133 reached a monitoring station in Sin City, though scientists emphasized it posed no health risks. "Unless you have an accident like this (in Japan) you wouldn't expect to see this. No doubt it's from Japan," said the manager of the monitoring program. Small amounts of radiation have also been detected in California, Colorado, Hawaii, and Washington. "They get caught up in the right wind pattern and they'll move across the ocean," said an environmental scientist.

1. These are serious fears. Put this in the context of "dirty bombs", and I think our priorities are
all messed up.

It's overdue time to take this country by the reigns, and finally address a reasonable energy tactic.

2. Take Who By What Reigns?
Our politicians are owned by corporations, banks, unions and lawyers. We don't contribute the large dollars needed for their re-elections campaigns. We are not the party bosses who pull the control strings. Ain't going to happen until there is a massive change in how Washington works. That's not likely to happen along as power is passed back and forth between the current two majors.

3. I agree. We spent how much invading how many countries on the fear of imagined WMDs?
This crap in fukushima is a real WMD. The BP oil spill, was a real WMD. It's time to get serious about renewable, clean energy. I don't just mean the US, I mean the human race.

4. What happened in Fukushima would not have happened there if OUR OFFICIALS
had not forced the situation politically.

In 2006, the mayor of Fukushima Prefecture wanted to decommission the reactors. That was one of the reasons why the electorate there had voted him in. But Bush sent some of his people, along with some GE officials, over to that prefecture, and they trumped up some bribery charges against the mayor, and a new mayor, one friendly to the nuke power idea was installed.

The rest is radioactive history.

6. Do you have some citation for that claim?
I never heard of it.

7. My friend K who is from Japan,
Edited on Sun Mar-27-11 06:36 PM by truedelphi
I called to find out from him how his relatives are doing. He called back to tell me and my husband. Asked for our help in getting the word out.

And of course, right now the citizens from that prefecture are either in shock, relocating, or dead. So it would be hard to go about the buisiness of corroboration.

I don't have any reason to think that K. would lie about this.

8. Is it possible your friend K could be mistaken? I also have a friend K in Japan
K. Shimoji in whose home I have spent many days and nights while in Japan and he has not heard of this either. We spoke on the phone an hour ago about an unrelated business matter as we often do and I thought to ask him since I had read the post here. However he lives in Koriyama away from the coast and thus avoided any serious damage and probably hasn't had much incentive to look into the history of those facilities.
