17. I object to this this picture!
Technically speaking helicopters don't exactly fly. They just beat the air into submission. :o There's also helicopter ground effect: they're so damned ugly, the ground actually repels them!

They may not have won the cold war but it wasn't from a lack of trying.

21. I think the A10's main gun is fairly impressive
and with over 1,200 pounds of armor I can see calling it a flying tank. It's predecessor, the P-47 was my favorite WWII fighter.

26. the Thuds? I'm more of a P-38 Lightning fan

Thunderbolt.. Lightning...

tomato, toma'to

and yes the 30mm is one hell of a gun but tanks are more like mobile artillery. For example, the Abrams has a 120mm main gun.

27. but can't you argue that the A-10 is our FLYING artillery?
If you can't get the tanks or howitzers forward enough to be of useful supprt, call in the A-10 to wipe out the enemy column. Tanks and A-10s essentially DO the same thing, kill enemy tanks and vehicles.

25. 30mm v 120mm (abrams)
http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/a10gatlinggunss_1.htm

^snip^

The AN/GAU-8a 30mm Avenger seven-barrel gatling gun, mounted only on the A-10 attack jet, is a 30mm, 7 barrel gatling gun used primarily in the air to ground role as a soft target killer and tank buster.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Abrams

^snip^

In 1990 all M1 tanks were fitted with 120 mm M256 smooth bore guns thus upgraded to M1A1 standards.

And they gave up.

Enough power and pretty much anything can fly.

I've always heard that General Electric proved that with enough thrust, even bricks can be made to fly.
